I run once or twice a week; that does not make me a runner.

I help some people out with learning English every now and again; that does not make me a teacher.

I installed menuhax on my 3DS once; that does not make me a hacker.

I code every day for several hours as my job; that *does* make me a coder (by profession).

I play games almost every day in some small capacity, but very rarely for any notable length of time. I do not consider myself a gamer an any way, shape or form.

Hii. First let me tell you what i mean.
You know. Almost all gamer have that fancy gaming setup. A set of cool headphones and speakers.a webcam. Twitch/youtube streaming steam account and stuff like that.

But i only have a 3ds wii u gamecube and a high end laptop. I dont care about fps games, the pc master race/xbox ps4 thing.
I dont own a steam account. I hate online multiolayer. It pisses me off when i see games like CoD CS go or games like no man sky and mineceaft.

I am a nintendo fanboy. I just bought a pc for emulation. I like mario zelda and pokemon and shin megami and many other rpg action adventure games.

Does that make me a gamer still or do i need myself to buy a gaming chair a monitor and a desk for my laptop and some headphones for voice chat in order to be qualified as a gamer.?
Everyone who plays games is a gamer, don't let a PC Elitist or a fanboy tell you otherwise.

It's not about PC Elitists or fanboys, it's about using correct English terminology. To be an "something"er you need to either do it for a living, or have more than a passing interest in it. Now, how deep your commitment needs to be is of course subjective, but playing a couple of rounds of Candy Crush on the bus certainly doesn't class you as a gamer (I'm certain most people who only play a few touch-games on their phone would be mortified to be classed as a gamer, to be honest!)

You play games, you are a gamer. No room for argument.

If you regularly play video games, you're a gamer.

Nope. I regularly play video games, but I am not a gamer. Just as I regularly drive to and from work but that doesn't make me a driver. Nearly everybody walks every day; even if it's just between the bed and the kitchen; that does not make them walkers.

As I say, the threshold is debatable but a good way to define it is if you regularly set aside time specifically to play games. I don't make time for playing games, I kill time by playing games.

It would seem to be one of those things you can choose, with basically no barrier to entry (it is not like you have to make one or anything, though arguably if you played a level a few times because you liked a sequence or wanted to do a certain type of run then it plays there). If you can approach a game and reasonably figure out what it is about and not have to abstract it based off board games or something then it plays.
I can't see the option to be reasonably offended, upset or put out even if someone else categorises you as one based on such things.

I can see some scope for maybe another term for someone truly invested in the concept.

"[as a general concept within the language/logic] must do substantially to be an -er"
That gets tricky to me, doubly so if you wind in anything with a legal implication (see various places around the world if you are wanting to call yourself an engineer, or most places in the world for medical professions).

"mobile phone games"
They seem to variously test reactions, recognition, pattern detection, maths, other skills like that, implement scores, have win states or rankings, failure states, you make choices of some consequence (possibly even a consequence you can predict the several turns on effects for if you are good) and most other things I can measure as a game. I would agree to a statement of they are not often that compelling or refined as examples from other systems (not that other systems don't have crazy amount of things to learn and implement) but I can't dismiss them.

I'm certain most people who only play a few touch-games on their phone would be mortified to be classed as a gamer, to be honest!
How much of that though is because various news outlets and such give it a bad rap? See also "OMG according to faux news my kid's a hacker".

That's MadMageKefka's opinion. You are doing fine, you are a gamer. BE PROUD!
I was replying to @azoreseuropa
I wasn't talking about him, I was replying to YOU. Notice how I quoted you? I never said OP was not a gamer. I even clarified this and he liked the post... Pay attention please.

Ok. My opinion and your opinion. Thats all. No argument. End of it, thanks.
Exactly! Thank you for being a normal person and not getting offended by opinions! If more people could do that, this world would be a much happier place. I mean this seriously. Sorry for being a little rude in my post, but you did try to say that playing games a lot was bad, then proceeded to tell me the correct way to live life according to you.

Unfortunately, that won't work because we can't deny mobile games being games.
Yes. Yes we can. Those are not games and those people are NOT gamers. Mobile games are the heroin of "games." They are designed to be boring and stupid, so you waste your money. They are literally designed to feed on people with addiction problems. People involved in the mobile game business should be ashamed. (obviously not talking about full games for mobile or ports of console games) Look at what its doing to the normal game market too. Remember Kirby Fighters? Try it out... They have the time limit thing where you can only do so many missions every so often after time has passed, but without the ability to pay to decrease wait time like those piles of crap you call games. What sense does that even make? The game has no online functionality. They locked a SINGLE PLAYER GAME behind a time locked paywall, that you can't even pay to bypass. Literally the only point of adding this mechanic was to copy the style of many mobile games and make it terrible.

Candy crush is a game, ergo someone who likes to play it is a gamer.
You and I will never be friends, will we.....?
No... a "gamer" would play a NORMAL puzzle game that doesn't try to charge you real life money for friggin power-ups. You know.... Bejewled, Tetris Attack, etc?

I get your angle: you only want to recognize people as gamers when you can identify yourself to some degree with them, based on a certain subset of the genre (like what metal is to all music).
Ok then, different (better) metaphor... Would you call someone who rides a motorcycle once a week a "biker?" What WOULD you classify as a biker? Someone who rides all the time with other like minded people? Exactly. Please don't say a gang... If you're even considering it I can think of at least 3 biker groups around here that are not gangs. Once a year here we even have an event where bikers ride for charity.

Luckily, there is a term for what you mean: hardcore gamers.
I would classify "hardcore gamers" as people who play games for as much time as possible. Hence the name, "hardcore." You don't have to play games 24-7 like me to be a gamer, most people don't have time to play like I do, but playing a single game for one hour every Saturday would not make you a gamer. Much like me riding a motorcycle a few times doesn't make me a biker. A something-er needs to have passion in what they do. Playing a game for 1 hour out of every 168 doesn't exactly scream "passionate" to me.

This is not a battle of wits. What if you're right, that's your opinion. You can't shove down what you think on others' throats.
Right.... but even in a friendly debate over an opinion, you still need to provide evidence to support your claims. YOU'RE the one that said:
You play games, you are a gamer. No room for argument.
Wait, wait, wait..... so if its an opinion, wouldn't there be room for argument? I think you lost sight of this argument because you are contradicting yourself. lol.

I suppose you are a NOR-Flash actually.

Regarding Gamer, what the fuck is a gamer?
There is no such thing, it is just a stupid word without real meaning.

I mean, everybody in this fucking world "games" (we are bad already, as there is no "to game" verb, but let's let it pass as "play games"), so everybody is a fucking gamer.
Or what the fuck is a gamer?
Somebody that plays competitive games professionally? But I've heard all kind of people using the word "gamer" to describe themeselves and they don't do any professional competition...
It is someone that plays games? That is every fucking body.... oh, no, you listen people say "he plays only smartphone games, he is no gamer"... hell, it is still a game as it is being played, but it doesn't seem to clasify.

In the end, gamer is just an elitist term that doesn't mean shit, and that applies subjectively to "whatever one person think is playing a serious game" (whatever that means), it is a bullshit term.

As far as I am concerned, everybody is a person, almost every fucking body plays some kind of game, and people that enjoy video games, are simply that: people that enjoy videogames, i.e. a common person from planet Earth.

- Yours sincerely, grumpy SarkW.

That is a stupid neologism, and still it doesn't cover what I am talking about.
You should learn to interpret a google result, google is just a tool and a monkey with a wrench would still have problems fixing a car.

Ohhhh man. The definition doesn't even imply "elite". That's why we have terms like Casual Gamer, geee. Gamers are gamers, they play games. LOL. Some do it for a living, others don't.
