I currently have a 2DS which has latest B9S and Luma. I am considering giving it to my daughter and buying myself the new 2DS XL.

I would want to put CFW on my new 2DS XL if I got one but I have heard you would need another console to do so. Could someone briefly explain what's involved please?

There are three methods you can use to install CFW onto a N2DSXL:
  1. DSiWare method (requires a second 3DS that already has CFW)
  2. Hardmod method (requires soldering)
  3. ntrboothax method (requires a compatible DS flashcart) (hasn't been released yet)
It sounds like you want to do Option #1, which means you have to (among other things) buy a particular cheap game on the eShop with the 2DS, install a modified file, perform a system transfer to the N2DSXL, and install B9S on the N2DSXL.

Thank you

If I do option 1 and I do a transfer, will I lose CFW on the original 2DS?

You will not lose CFW on the 2DS. The guide will have you perform a NAND backup beforehand, and you will restore the NAND backup after the process is done. In other words, the 2DS will be identical to what it was before the process. You may have to call Nintendo to restore the NNID if it has one though, because the NNID will be transferred to the N2DSXL.

Last question. On my 2DS I never actually set up a NNID. I can still buy the dsiware game from the store without one? And also can I do a system transfer without one?

You don't need to have an NNID to buy the game, and you don't need an NNID to do a system transfer. Not having an NNID will actually make things easier because you won't have to worry about restoring the NNID.
