I have been trying to play katamari damacy on my cfw ps3 I start the game and everything works fine then about 5 to 10 minutes in it just quits no beep no indication just dead straight off

I really don't get it nothing seemed to be wrong and I have left mr. Misquito running on it's own for a similar time if not longer and the previous owner played final fantasy on it so I really don't get it

Ok now I have started up iris manager before the game and now it seems to be running fine does that mean this is a heat issue?

Most PS2 games don't run well on the ps3 due to removal of the EE (emotion engine) and even legit psn ps2 classics are known to crash after some time. Since your on CFW which one are you using also model ps3 would help too.

Is it a legit ps2 classic or injected? Or is it an ISO using cobra?
Iso using cobra

Yep. You don't have a backwards compatible console, so you're more likely than not going to run into unplayable PS2 games, if not because of a crash but some error or other.
We're talking about katamari damacy a game that according to the compatibility charts is 100% working honestly you're not being to helpful I already know it's not backwards compatible this issue seems to have nothing to do with that

Never had a problem like the one you're describing but i don't use my ps3 anymore tho for ps2 games. Use a fat ps2 now with an HDD loader wich is the way to go. You should look in 2 that and go down that route.

Ironically enough I bought this ps3 to replace a modded ps2 slim with a dying lens and it's been good enough aside from odd issues with ps1 and 2 games

Also it seems the us psn file is not online sadly

well fat ps2's aren't that expensive. You can buy most used for like 10 15 bucks. A ps2 sata adapter on ebay is like 15 - 20 dollars and then you can also buy a magicgate 64mb memory card with everything preloaded for like 15 - 20 dollars and just use an old sata hdd you still have around or so. It's much better to use it like that then on a ps3 with no ps2 chip inside.

The PlayStation 3, known for the furious Red Light Of Death is overheating really easily while emulating a PlayStation 2 game. I thought everyone knows that but you seem to be a special case. Nevertheless it can be really dangerous to continue what you’ve been doing so far. It can have and will have a really bad impact on your console. The life of your PlayStation will be shortened to 1 year, if you’re lucky.
Why this happens is because many custom firmwares really badly handle the overheating issues of the PlayStation 3, especially the slim models. If I were you I would buy myself a real Sony PlayStation 2 and enjoy the good old classics like they were meant to be enjoyed. It is a really dangerous and stupid setup that you own right now and is operating for you in a daily basis.

I have a couple of PS2's with dying lenses or something (only read disks when they in the mood) I switched them to Memory card based exploits and so now they boot straight into OpenLoad or what ever and I can transfer games to the internal hard drives in them over the network. It's not ideal but at least I don't have to deal with the laser issue.

Your making a lot of assuption s you know you can get your isos from your discs right or are you just here to be a dick

Also the game was extremely successful and had many sequels also the game was released as a ps2 classic and easily runs on the ps3 given a config to fix this simple issue

Oh and not only did I sign no agreement it is also not illegal to have a modded ps3 you utter fool piracy is illegal modding a product you own is not
Calling me an „utter fool“ is just another ridiculously stupid act from you even though I did not insult you in any kind of way, and actually wanted to help in the best way I could.
It clearly shows that you have absolutely no knowledge about simple things in the modding scene and makes you look like a 10-year old. Sad.
Nevertheless I kindly explain to you how wrong you are.
Yes. You agreed to terms of services by buying the console itself. Never heard of „Ignorantia legis non excusat“?
Even using the firmware itself automatically makes you tied tightly to the terms of services. Read and use your brain cells before you write random answers with absolutely no examples. Next time before you buy a console, maybe you should actually read the agreement?
Anyway now that you insulted me, and violated the GBATemp terms of services, I’m going to report you so that you rethink and maybe change your undesirable behavior.

I...what? Please stop lol. You literally have no idea what you are talking about. I have 4 ps3's with a library of about 145 games, ALL of them are modded in someway shape or form. One is on 3.55 running geo's old as cfw (a phat launch 60GB btw) and it runs great to this day. One of them has the Cobra ODE, and the other two are running Rebug and are slims. Your whole talk about "Shortening life spans" is nonsense. PS2 remasters on the slim are software emulated and the system is DESIGNED for that. What he is running into is a bug in the SOFTWARE EMULATOR, plain and simple. Same thing happens with dot hack, it is unplayable on slim PS3's, but will not harm the system in anyway when it crashes. The point is, as long as you keep your systems ventilated and maintained, they can last 10+ years even with mods. Hell, my super ghetto modded Saturn still works fine and that was my first big soldering job (I was like 11 or 12 lol). Also, while yes, they can go the PS2 route, they shouldn't have to if they have a system that can do it. It's like saying "Don't try to run PSX games on your Wii or you'll shorten its life hurr hurr"....Just Silly lol

Nice but isn't loading incredibly slow

Nahh it's faster off the PS2 internal hard drive than any other form of loading. Putting them on the hard drive over the network also seems slightly faster than putting in a disk. I don't think 100% of games will work from the internal hard drive (network adapter) but it's pretty high with the later versions of OpenLoad. hmmm or is it HD Load? I have been using emulation of the PS2 so much lately... lol

The issue I have recently solved is that I used to have to drag out this 150 foot long ethernet cord so I could reach that side of the house... but I bought a new router and used my old one as a wifi bridge so even that is less of an issue now.

I made a deeper look into your reply and will now open your mind at least a little bit. First of all you’re mentioning your Phat PlayStation 3 models? Why? It has a PlayStation 2-Emulation Chip inside of it, of course it will not harm the system in any way. Although nothing happened to your consoles doesn’t mean it cannot happen at all? Never heard of the PS3 overheating problem? It does not affect every PlayStation 3, but still we have millions of reports of this problem, and who knows, maybe it will happen to your console sooner or later. Overheating IS shortening life of any device. Next you accuse me of talking nonsense? I still don’t get it why you are doing it. I’m clearly proven to be telling the truth and if you don’t believe you should check the internet.
At the end of your reply you give a really bad comparison to a Wii.
I probably will never understand why you did that because the Wii never had any major overheating problems, so it clearly makes your whole comparison bad.

Oh wait, I didn’t mention the PS2 remasters that you’ve been talking about. Yes. There are remastered versions made for the PlayStation 3 and yes they are designed for the console and will absolutely not harm your PlayStation. But he is not trying to play a remastered version? He is trying to play an original game designed for the PlayStation 2 and expects it to work flawlessly on a PlayStation 3 model that do not even have a PS2-Emulation chips in them? It’s just joke-funny

I think he actually meant PS2 Classics from the PSN, which are NOT actual remasters by the way. PS2 Classics use the exact same emulator (made by SONY) the OP was using, so I would be surprised if it could harm the PS3 in any way. By the way, this "Classics" emulator is fully software, and thus does not require the EE and GS chips.

Try a config file with the settings listed here (under the label for Katamari Damacy, of course). If the issue isn't your hardware dying, that should fix it right up. You shouldn't need to update Rebug for this to work, as support for CONFIG files was added in version 4.81.2/Cobra 7.5. Additional details can be find on the release page for 4.81.2 as well as on the previous link I gave you, however the explanation for how to actually go about creating a CONFIG file is a bit vague, so here's the breakdown.

To apply the config patch, copy the hex code under "Config Data" for that game (from the first link), and paste it into a new file in a hex editor like HxD. Then save this as the exact name of your game with .CONFIG at the end, and place it in the same folder the ISO is in on your PS3. For instance, if your game file on the PS3 is named Katamari.ISO, your new config file will be named Katamari.ISO.CONFIG
