step 1 buy him a new laser. if that doesnt work, extract the drive keys from his disc drive - using a flasher tool ( sorry cant remember its name) SAVE THE KEYS, buy a new drive, flash his keys to it and problem solved. cheaper picking up a 2nd hand one these days tho. the reason your drive on his machine wouldnt play the games is because of the keys - each console has its own keys married to its drive. at best your drive on his machine would play dvds

i think that might be a little complicated for me to do. haha. I don't he cares that much about his xbox so i don't really think i should go out and buy a new laser. Thanks for the input though. :grog:

yeah a new laser on ebay is usually the best bet you may have to pay the seller to unsoilder a bit for you if you cant do it yourself. the rest of the tools needed would likely cost you more than a mint preowned xbox - sayin that.... for less than the cost of a laser
ive picked up preowned xboxes for £10 white slim 300gig with controller!! so go look on gumtree or craiglists depending on where you live.

ok from memory - you can mod his xbox without the use of his drive - i have 3 xboxs 2 softmodded and one without a working drive - i plan on doing it if ever i get spare time. you need and old computer (one with ide ports) and old harddrive one bigger that the 16 gig of his original and again it must be ide, a copy of slayer (i think) and an ftp program, ideally a copy of coins ops 8 as well. there are definitely old guides out there but basically you clone his old drive to a bigger sized drive, ftp the hacks and roms and menus on there and thats it. but its old hardware these days!

no, he gave it to me being unable to read disks. At first, the tray never even opened. I had to replace a belt so that it could slide in and out

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

i think only the red mario kart edition phat was v5

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

  • cearp @ cearp:
@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
