yifanlu is making an SD adapter for PS Vita 3G

oheo8ne9rmiiowysmpda.jpg

Everyone's favourite Vita scene hero, Yifanlu, is creating what most users have been dreaming of. A micro SD adapter for the PS Vita! However, this will be specifically limited to ONLY the 3G OLED models. This works by replacing the 3G modem with an adapter. If you want to get a hold of a 3G Vita, I'd advise getting one soon before the prices rise. The "Early Bird" donation perk gives you a finished board for $20. I would imagine the price to be similar to this when it is released.

Vita memory cards are too expensive and it would be nice to be able to use a microSD card. The 3G feature is pretty useless. Combing those two thoughts and I decided "what if we replace that modem with USB storage?" This works because the Vita's modem port is simply a USB 2.0 port that uses the miniPCIe form factor. A hacked Vita running 3.60 has the ability to load custom drivers, and it is just a matter of putting all the pieces together.

Features
  • At the core of the adapter is the USB2244 chip, which is a SD to USB microprocessor. It is a high end chip (you won't find it in cheap SD to USB adapters) that has good power consumption and a long lifespan. It supports SD/SDHC/SDXC cards.
  • You need to open up the Vita and replace the modem card. This is relatively simple and is akin to changing the battery. You can put in a large microSD card, install it, and forget about it.
  • With HENkaku Ensō, you can use the adapter on boot
  • Because there's extra space on the board, I also added two debug ports that the original modem uses to communicate with the Vita. Using them is optional. Developers and hackers can use this for their homebrew and hacks.
  • All design files, Gerbers, schematics, layouts, BOMs, software drivers, etc will be public and open source. Anyone can produce the board as well as modify it.

Update:
100 units are being made and there are 114 backers. This means they are already sold out.

Awesome news but damn, only working for the 3g model, that's a bummer, would need to hunt one of those down.

This is awesome, I received my 3G OLED vita for the low price of modding someone's N3DS and giving them a 32GB SD card. He said he never used it and then just handed it to me.

EDIT: No more early bird units available.

Perhaps you could just tear out that oh-so-random socket the vitas never use to make space on other hardware revisions?
It's not about space, it's about connecting it to the motherboard. I'm guessing that the Slim and 1000 models don't have the mini-PCIe interface that's used for the 3G modem.

I assume a wifi+3g model is compatible too and not just a bog standard 3G only version (cannot see any other differences than just an extra Wifi chip.

Mine is a OLED Wifi+3G PCH-1103 and it says PCH-110X in that source link.

Each prototype run will result in ~10 boards, but I only need one or two to test with. At the end, I will send away all the boards I have at random. You could get a breakout board used in development or a blank psvsd board or one with a couple of components on it as a test. None of these will work as-is if inserted into a Vita.
Items included:
  • Prototype board
6 out of 35 claimed
Ships Worldwide
Estimated August 2017

More updates.

The chinese black market will jump this and release a clone no doubt. There is some serious money to be made on this after giving SONY the middle finger on their extortionate cards.

You know what, I thought there was two original models back when they first got released:blush:. Think I got mixed up, as I remember there something about a SIM 3G and without one, so assumed there was two versions like Wifi only and a separate 3G

Example: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Vita-...8&qid=1496008456&sr=1-3&keywords=Sony+PS+Vita
Yeah, it's cuz they used to call them just "3G models" hah. Would be a pretty poor design choice to just go with a locked (in the US anyways) 3G only version.
