The ultimate Xbox One dev guide

this guide takes from @ElijahZAwesome and @wiired24 guides and builds on them and thanks to @dominater01 for sending me the ps1 emulator.

read this whole guide carefully! I am not responsible if you screw up.

I have 3 devactivation slot to share with someone if you need it
skip this part if you already have dev activated your console.

It costs £16 pounds or $20 to dev activate your console but it is free if you have a student email or you school is part of the Microsoft imagine program
Okay. So this tutorial will allow you to get a completely free Microsoft developer account, which will allow you to side load apps on Xbox one, develop apps, and get basically any Microsoft developer tool for free, completely legit as well.

HOW TO GET A FREE MS DEVELOPER ACCOUNT:
You need to go to imagine.microsoft.com.
You'll see a page like this, click sign in.

You will be taken to this page where you should sign in with a pre-existing Microsoft account or you can create one as well.

After you sign in you should be taken to something like this. (I'm not sure about everything because i've already made an account)

From here, just fill out the required info. If your in middle school, you may have to tell it that your in high school. if your email is middle school specific, it may not work. my school email works for the entire district so i'm fine. You may want to set graduation to one or two years ahead. of course you can also just fill this info out legitimately but its your choice whatevs.

Now after you do that you will be taken to your account page where you will have to verify your studentity. (see what i did there?) for this the email you use to verify doesn't need to be the same one you used to sign up, it just needs to be accessible and a school issued email.

At this point you will be back on your account page, which a notification telling you that you have been verified. don't spam me saying it didn't work, sideloading is new and the only mention of this method of getting a dev account is a single comment on a thread. you will now want to click download, then click software catalog.

You will be at a catalog of windows software now, theres a lotta cool stuff here as well if your a developer besides the dev account. Anyway, scroll to the bottom until you see this:

Click it and there will be a page where on the right, it will say something along the lines of "redeem code" then it will tell it on the page. just copy it for now, if you lose it, just come back to this page.

Now go to https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/dashboard/apps/overview and it will ask you to sign in. then when you do you'll get another page asking to fill out some info. I can't show this because i couldn't get this far with my dummy account. anyway, fill out the info, and there should be a next button, which will present you with billing information(credit cards, etc) look for this input field and paste the code you copied:

It will cover your billing, so press next or sign up, whatever it is, and you will be presented with your dashboard! congrats! you have a completely free developer account.

I've gotten several requests to do this tutorial so today I am going to show you not only how to activate developer mode on your Xbox One but in addition I will show you how you can share it across two other Xbox Ones as well.

[1.] Go to the Xbox One store and search for Dev Mode Activation. Once you find it download it.

[2.] Once finished go to my games and apps and select "Dev Mode Activation"

[3.] Take special note of the code that is displayed

[4.] Go to https://developer.microsoft.com/xboxactivate and enter the code displayed when prompted.

Note - If you do not already have a developer account you must purchase one now. You can do that here https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/store/register
It's only $19.99 and it's a one time fee. You are able to activate up to three Xbox One consoles.

[5.] After entering the code click "Agree and Activate". You Xbox One will now display a progress screen for a bit wait for it to finish. Once Activation is finished you will now go to your Dev Mode Activation app and click "Switch and Restart"

Congratulations, Your Xbox One will now restart into Developer Mode :yay:


In order to add more Xbox One devices just download the "Dev Mode activation app" on that console and then when you are activating you will log to your developer account and navigate to dashboard --> Settings and under Devices click "Xbox One development Consoles". It will look like this

From there just enter your activation code displayed on the Xbox One and this Xbox One will be activated along with any additional ones you would like to activate. Like i said you get a total of 3 activations per account so if you have family members or friends who want Emulators or homebrew on their Xbox One then it's a great deal for them too.



Any time you wish to go back to retail mode just navigate to Dev Home and select "Leave Developer Mode". When you are leaving Dev Mode you will always be asked if you want to delete sideloaded apps. Make sure and deselect the checkbox so you can keep all of your homebrew. Also alot of people have the common misconception that Developer Mode will erase their retail games or apps. I'm here to tell you that's complete Bullshit. All of your retail games and apps will be unaffected.

Retrix(LibretroRT) is a massive project aimed at porting all libretro cores to UWP. It currently supports Nes,Snes,Sega Master System,Sega Game gear, sg 1000, Gameboy, Gameboy advance, and many more to be ported soon. This guide will cover installing Retrix for your xbox one console.

Retrix brings with it support for local 2 player something we have not had until now. It also opens the floodgates to every single emulator that is currently inside the scope of the libretro project. You can see a full list here https://github.com/libretro

I had been sitting on releasing Retrix for quite a bit now but it has finally reached a point where it is stable enough for release. Update: The problem with Save/Load states has been fixed the link has been updated to the latest version.

Please Note: If you have an issue with the "A Button" bringing up the hidden overlay menu make sure you have "Apps can add a border" enabled.
You can do this by navigating to settings -> Display -> Video Settings -> Tick the box that says apps can add a border and your set.

Recently I had wrote a tutorial on how to use "Nesbox" through your Internet Browser. While that's one way to do things what if you don't have a good internet connection or lose connection altogether? What if you don't want to have to go through the monotonous and often tedious task of having to open up your browser, type in the hostname, wait for the page to load etc every time you wanna play Zelda? What if you just want the convience of easily accessing it alongside your other homebrew and sideloaded apps? Well today I have the solution for you. The developer of Nesbox was kind enough to release a .appx bundle package for easy sideloading and installation of Nesbox. The Emulator now takes advantage of the hardware rather than your internet connection so everything from NES to GBA games runs flawlessly. I'll link to a video below the tutorial to showcase the performance of the Emulator.

[1.] Download the .appx bundle package here

[2.] Once downloaded use winrar or a similar program to extract the archive

[3.] Restart your Xbox One into developer mode.

[4.] Click on settings and you will see a menu that looks like this

In addition you make sure "Require authentication to access Xbox Device Portal" is checked you will want to set up a username and a password.


[4.] Once finished go back to Dev Home and make note of your Xbox IP Address along with the port number listed at the bottom right corner it will look something like 192.168.37.8:11224 (Yours may be different) Open up your web browser and type in https:// followed by your IP and port number so for example https://192.168.37.8:11224alternatively you can also enter https://XboxOne:11224 for example. Once you log in you may receive a warning about the security certificate. Go ahead and proceed anyways.

[5.] You will now be greeted with a menu that looks like this

From Here it's rather simple just click Add and choose file

You will then select the Nesbox_1.1.3.0_x86_x64_arm .appx bundle package from the archive you extracted earlier.

Make sure you install the dependencies that are listed in the x64 folder of the archive that you extracted earlier. You need them installed in order for Nesbox to work. However if you have already Sideloaded and installed the VBA10 Emulator then you already have the required dependencies and you DO NOT need to install them. Credit goes to user Xeroyamil for alerting me to this issue.


Nesbox will now deploy and install to your Xbox One

You can load your backups either from a USB Thumb Drive or External Storage.
Nesbox supports NES,SNES,GENESIS,GB,GBC,GBA games.

File types should be NES (.nes), Sega (.gen .smd), Super Nintendo (.smc), GameBoy (.gb .gbc .gba)

A few days ago I had discovered a way to get the popular psp emulator "PPSSPP" running on the Xbox One Console. I wrote a tutorial for how to get it running on the Xbox One which you can still find here

However installing it was anything but easy as it required you to download different pieces of software, mess around with settings,dive into a shell, and re-compile PPSSPP from plain source code. I am pleased to announce that I have successfully built a .appx package for easy installation. Now you can install PPSSPP in just a few minutes but it doesn't stop there. If you read my original tutorial when it was first published I noted that the performance was about average and could often be slow. This was do to it being a "Debug Build". I later found the fix to this and updated the guide as well. With this .appx package you are getting a "Release Build" which is much faster and the emulator now practically runs at full speed on the Xbox One. I'll link to videos below at the end of the tutorial to showcase what the performance is like.

PPSSPP Has no required dependencies so you can go ahead and install.


PPSSPP will now deploy and install onto your Xbox One

To play your backups just load them off a USB thumdrive or external storage device.
If you ever run into any issues with save states just uninstall and reinstall and it will work fine.

Thanks to the wonderful team at PPSSPP for making this UWP Port without your hard work this would not be possible.


[Just a couple last things]

NOTE #1 To enable full screen go to Settings --> Display and Sound --> Video output
Then deselect the option that says "Apps can add a border" Credit goes to

Note #2 For some odd reason by default pressing the B button brings up the menu.
To fix this just go to settings -> Input -> and map the O button as LT.

Note: In order to play your backups you will need to transfer them to your OneDrive Account and download them from there. For some weird reason this emulator will not work correctly if trying to import roms from a USB Drive or external device

Things have been moving at a slow pace lately as I have been busy working on other projects for the Xbox One. For those who may not already be aware Chip8 was a virtual machine that was developed in the 1970's to play small games. Games like Space Invaders, Pong, Tetris, etc. Today I'm bringing you a Chip 8 Emulator for Xbox One. This is a port of Joey Andrews Chip8

Originally there was no support for the Xbox One gamepad but I added that in. I also fixed up the U.I. a bit so it looks better on Xbox One. I intend to improve on the original code by adding sound as well in a later version.

Getting started -

Download .appx Files from the Windows Store
To download appx packages from the Windows Store, we are going to use a free software called Fiddler. Fiddler is free web debugging proxy software that can log all the HTTP and HTTPS traffic between your computer and the Internet. Since it can log the HTTP(S) traffic, we are going to grab the direct download link from the Windows Store and use it to download the target app’s appx file package.

To start, download Fiddler from its official site and install it like any other Windows Software.

By default, Windows won’t allow apps to send network traffic to the local computer, so we first need to remove this restriction. To do that, open Fiddler by searching for it in the Start menu.

Once opened, click on the “WinConfig” button appearing on the top navigation bar.

The above action will open the “AppContainer Loopback Exemption Utility” window. Here, click on the button “Exempt All,” and then click on the “Save Changes” button. Once you are done, close this window.

On the main window, click on the “Remove” icon and select the option “Remove all” from the drop-down menu. This action will clear the capture screen.

Now open the Windows Store, find the app you want to download but keep in mind that under the app in system requirements the architecture needs to have x64 in there.

now once you have found the app you want click on the “Install” button. In my case, I’m trying to download the CrystalDiskMark 5 app. This is a win32 application converted to a UWP app.

Once Windows acquires the license and starts the download process, this is how it looks in the Windows Store. Once you see this, proceed to the next step.

Since Fiddler is running in the background, all the traffic is being monitored by it. From the monitoring results we can find and copy the URL to download the appx package. To do that, click on the “Find” button appearing in the top navigation bar.

In the Find window type “appx” in the empty field, and press the Enter button.

The above action will highlight all the URLs that are responsible for downloading the appx package. From the highlighted URLs, find and right-click on the first URL and select the option “Copy > Just URL.” While doing this, make sure that highlighted URL has the status code 200.

Once the URL has been copied, simply paste it into your favorite browser’s address bar, and press the Enter button. The appx package should be downloaded automatically. Depending on the download size, it may take some time, but you should have the file in your Downloads folder as soon as the download is complete.

After downloading, you can store it for offline usage and install it as needed.

your app will now deploy and install to your Xbox One

Wouldn't it be great if there was a single application on the Xbox One that had custom skins and was extremely customizeable and from it you could load PPSSPP, VBA10, NESBOX, etc all from this one application. Each of them would have their own tile with their own graphic logo. And wouldn't it be cool if you could also load Kodi from this application as well. You could call it God Mode. (Dev Mode Pun xD)

i mean, you could. it may look a little bad but you could just write a simpl U.I that has buttons that launch those said programs, but contained inside the first app. then modify said apps to have a button that relaunches the U.I

in fact, im not certain but we could make this when were finished with our project if we really wanted to. i may be not thinking of something important but its seems really easy to me.

this guide takes from @ElijahZAwesome and @wiired24 guides and builds on them and thanks to @dominater01 for sending me the ps1 emulator.

read this whole guide carefully! I am not responsible if you screw up. this guide is incomplete i will finish it
tomorrow.


I have two devactivation slots to share with someone if you need it
skip this part if you already have dev activated your console.

It costs £16 pounds or $20 to dev activate your console but it is free if you have a student email or you school is part of the Microsoft imagine program
Okay. So this tutorial will allow you to get a completely free Microsoft developer account, which will allow you to side load apps on Xbox one, develop apps, and get basically any Microsoft developer tool for free, completely legit as well.

HOW TO GET A FREE MS DEVELOPER ACCOUNT:
You need to go to imagine.microsoft.com.
You'll see a page like this, click sign in.

You will be taken to this page where you should sign in with a pre-existing Microsoft account or you can create one as well.

After you sign in you should be taken to something like this. (I'm not sure about everything because i've already made an account)

From here, just fill out the required info. If your in middle school, you may have to tell it that your in high school. if your email is middle school specific, it may not work. my school email works for the entire district so i'm fine. You may want to set graduation to one or two years ahead. of course you can also just fill this info out legitimately but its your choice whatevs.

Now after you do that you will be taken to your account page where you will have to verify your studentity. (see what i did there?) for this the email you use to verify doesn't need to be the same one you used to sign up, it just needs to be accessible and a school issued email.

At this point you will be back on your account page, which a notification telling you that you have been verified. don't spam me saying it didn't work, sideloading is new and the only mention of this method of getting a dev account is a single comment on a thread. you will now want to click download, then click software catalog.

You will be at a catalog of windows software now, theres a lotta cool stuff here as well if your a developer besides the dev account. Anyway, scroll to the bottom until you see this:

Click it and there will be a page where on the right, it will say something along the lines of "redeem code" then it will tell it on the page. just copy it for now, if you lose it, just come back to this page.

Now go to https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/dashboard/apps/overview and it will ask you to sign in. then when you do you'll get another page asking to fill out some info. I can't show this because i couldn't get this far with my dummy account. anyway, fill out the info, and there should be a next button, which will present you with billing information(credit cards, etc) look for this input field and paste the code you copied:

It will cover your billing, so press next or sign up, whatever it is, and you will be presented with your dashboard! congrats! you have a completely free developer account.

Prerequesites - Xbox One (Any Model), $19.99, (One Time Fee for dev account) PC


I've gotten several requests to do this tutorial so today I am going to show you not only how to activate developer mode on your Xbox One but in addition I will show you how you can share it across two other Xbox Ones as well.

[1.] Go to the Xbox One store and search for Dev Mode Activation. Once you find it download it.

[2.] Once finished go to my games and apps and select "Dev Mode Activation"

[4.] Go to https://developer.microsoft/xboxactivate and enter the code displayed when prompted.

Note - If you do not already have a developer account you must purchase one now. You can do that here https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/store/register
It's only $19.99 and it's a one time fee. You are able to activate up to three Xbox One consoles.

[5.] After entering the code click "Agree and Activate". You Xbox One will now display a progress screen for a bit wait for it to finish. Once Activation is finished you will now go to your Dev Mode Activation app and click "Switch and Restart"

Congratulations, Your Xbox One will now restart into Developer Mode :yay:


In order to add more Xbox One devices just download the "Dev Mode activation app" on that console and then when you are activating you will log to your developer account and navigate to dashboard --> Settings and under Devices click "Xbox One development Consoles". It will look like this

From there just enter your activation code displayed on the Xbox One and this Xbox One will be activated along with any additional ones you would like to activate. Like i said you get a total of 3 activations per account so if you have family members or friends who want Emulators or homebrew on their Xbox One then it's a great deal for them too.



Any time you wish to go back to retail mode just navigate to Dev Home and select "Leave Developer Mode". When you are leaving Dev Mode you will always be asked if you want to delete sideloaded apps. Make sure and deselect the checkbox so you can keep all of your homebrew. Also alot of people have the common misconception that Developer Mode will erase their retail games or apps. I'm here to tell you that's complete Bullshit. All of your retail games and apps will be unaffected.

I wonder if we will ever see a Dreamcast emu for Xbone, or a DS emulator for that matter since Drastic can run on phones.

Hopefully one day, I think wiired24 is right now busy with ps1 and n64 emulators, after that he will most likely try something else. I was thinking that MAME should be ported to xbox one especially considering the fact that it already has controller support and a good GUI (depending on the version) and I think it is also open source. but I could be wrong because I am very new to the xbox one homebrew scene

By all means, take your time. You guys are doing a really good job. I am a programmer, but the thing is I do not understand code for emulators, I wish I could help. My main experience is with unity

Just finished porting Chip 8 to Xbox One yesterday :)

We almost have psx-box finished we're just waiting on Adam to finish the work he is doing so we can use PSXACT as a backend.
Once we're done with psx-box I'd like for us to tackle Dreamcast.

I really want to play Shenmue 1 and 2. I know there are rumors for the hd remasters. But I do not trust sega to release them in time before Shenmue 3
