Nintendo announces the New 2DS XL

Coming out of absolutely nowhere, Nintendo has revealed a new variation of the 2DS...the New 2DS XL! The system features a top screen that looks almost like a cell phone snapped onto the bottom of a 3DS. It has the extra processing power of the N3DS, amiibo functionality, and the C-stick nub, while, just like the original 2DS, omits the 3D feature of the handheld. The New 2DS XL will release on July 28, and retail for $149.99.

I also thought it was a joke or a mock up at first. Looks like mock of a phone version of 3ds. Doubt it means anything, but I does really look like a phone.

I bet the only reason they're releasing this is to patch a bunch of exploits. They don't even care. They're not doing this for any financial purposes, they're fixing some exploits just because they can.
Good point. Tho, I still think they are doing it for financial purposes.

Great minds. o3o

On topic, I think it looks pretty slick and might be a good alternative for people that don't really care about the 3d aspect but want the extra power the n3ds has. As I said on discord, I wonder if it will ship 11.4 or if they've had em ready to go for awhile now, in which case hopefully ships 11.3 or so.
I really doubt that it is shipping at less than 11.4.

I forgot to mention, seeing how Nintendo is so adamant on steering clear away from the 3D effect, the original 2DS and the now, New 2DS XL really goes to show they just don't care about 3D anymore - or ever. It was purely just a gimmick to sell 3DS at launch.
I disagree. Otherwise they wouldn't have bother with super stable 3D.

The 3D effect was just dumb, when people used it it was only for cutscenes and not actual game play. If people used it for actual game play it just hurt people's eyes. It was never used
You guys don't speak for everyone.

What, why...
You know what's coming next, don't you?
YES, MORE SYSTEM UPDATES. ^_^
I think you mean:

YES, M̷̀O̡R̨͘È S͎̯̘͚̦̜T̛͚Á̟B͚̼̪͓̝̘͘I̲̟̠͇L̴̹̟̘̩͚̞̭I͕͍̲̗͚̩͓T̵Y̝͖̝ U̸̫̣̮̲̬͓͚̠̓ͩ͛ͨ͐͋ͯ́P̷̷͖̟̮͔̩͔̺͂ͫ̈̑̿̒͌͘D̻͉̙̟̘̉̓ͨ͠A̷̢̜̫̥̋͑̓͒͝T̺̭̮̲͛ͯ̈́́̔̀Ę̝̰̭̹̟̮̏̑͡S̴͚͎͔̯͎̻͙̓ͩ̑.̷̸̢̙̹͙̻̙̯̺͊̽͊̌̊̍̐͗͂̀͂̋̇͝

So the purpose of this is to be a new 3ds... But cheaper to tackle the market of people who think the new 3ds is too expensive and don't want the blocky 2ds... Yet they're releasing it when anyone interested has already bough some kind of 3ds and the production costs for it are there... So is it really going to make much of a profit?

Taking into account all markets worldwide, probably oodles. There are a lot of places where they run a few years behind the cutting edge.

aahh ... doh ... yup.

machigatta.

Then GBA had 3.

What are the 3 for original GB? I know about 'Pocket' and 'Lite' ... ??
Gameboy was just 2 revisions (pocket and lite)
Gameboy Color didnt have any
GameBoy Advance was 3 if you count the slightly brighter model of the original SP.

Is this even necessary now? would have made sense like ... if they released it along with the original 2DS. Just focus on the Switch Nintendo

3DS was going to be getting support for another year or two anyway, might as well make what profit they can from hardware in the meantime.

I cant say thats a good thing if they keep supporting handhelds more than their main console, well we all know how thats going to end

Who said anything about "supporting more?" The remaining 3DS release schedule is a lot more sparse than the Switch release schedule.

And even then why now? The Switch is out they should focus on it. Not on a 6 year old 270px console (whatever the nbr of px it actually has you get my point).
This annoncement is just unnecesary since the 3DS will eventually die...You can find use to this new handheld and I personally dont since there's already the New 3DS XL (even though I have to admit this one has a cool design...)
Well for starters them making this doesn't take away from the Nintendo Switch, they see demand for something like this therefore they made it, now it would have been better for them to do it at before the Switch's release, but it's still fine now.

Also even if the 3DS dies that doesn't change the fact that you can't play 3DS Games on the Switch.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

1) They are both mobile so they are part of the mobile gaming competition.
2)Looking at the comment section there is not a lot of people who wanted this.
3)You got me there.
I would be hard pressed to call the Switch part of the mobile gaming competition, as it has games similar to the PS4, and Xbox One, and is marketed as a home console.

I cannot see Nintendo selling many of these I'm not sure why they have gone down this route. For a price tag of £149.99p you can get a Switch for an extra £130. I do like the design though I think it has a bit more of a futuristic look than the N3DSXL.

Edit: I realize the OP is in dollars and not pounds but still it wont be that far out.

The n2ds looks nice as hell, makes me wanna buy it to have another console. Heck I wish I knew about this before I bought my n3ds and a o3ds. One day I might buy it but it's just going to be for visuals only since I would barely use it :p thinking about it I shouldn't buy it

If this new system can't be hacked via custom firmware then hopefully sky3ds+ will work on it. If it does sky3ds+ company will be making some money.

Makes me wonder if this is the last of the 3DS revisions, or will they show something at E3. They are already doing new Joy Cons. I feel like there will be another hardware thing shown, rather for the Switch or 3DS idk.

I can see you point. I'm just getting bored with people begging for the next DS console without thinking about what that will do to their precious Switch. BTW a next DS would still being using a similar screen size so imagine a PS Vita or Wii U level DS with a small screen size. Those two alone and some proper programming would put the damn thing neck and neck with Switch. Not a pretty picture!
If there is another DS line, I doubt it will play separated games from the Switch other than backwards compatibility.

That's it. I legit believe there will be a New Nintendo Switch someday.
I was already thinking there will be revisions for the Switch. This does help solidify that idea.
