I am quite confident this is heat related. And could be from more than one issue.

Firstly, it does appear there are issues with the battery Ninty is using in the Switch.
Those of you who do not know, LiPo "puffing" is actually quite common in the RC hobby world. And is more prevalent with cheaper LiPo batteries.

If Ninty is using lower quality packs in the Switch, this would explain all the issues with puffing and units not charging fully.


Then there is the dock. It is a poor design choice, and traps heat within the frame. As a portable device, and a full metal frame that was intended to dissipate heat, Ninty's design for the dock baffles me. It should have came equiped with a small 5v DC fan to ensure heat would NEVER be an issue.


Another point to consider.... Differential in materials.
Remember the complaints about screen protectors coming loose from the display.
Well the display is actually plastic, and will expand/retract at a different rate from other blends of plastics, metal, and of course glass.
So heat IS a concern with the Switch.
As the system heats up and cools, the display surface is going to expand and retract a lot. This could also cause warping.


One final point. I think it was a poor decision to go with the plastic screen over glass. I know Ninty did it for durability reasons, but the Switch needed glass.
Just as with cellphones and tablets, glass adds A LOT of strength to the device.
Remove the glass from many devices, and they will bend and flex quite a bit.
If the Switch had a glass screen, the bending would prob not happen.

That said, I would advise that everyone get a glass screen protector for their Switch. Having one installed will prob add a good amount of strength to the console, to mitigate flexing.

Mine does have glass screen protection since it was flat, it was no help.

And i dun think it's the battery puffing, cause i have had that happen to more than one phone and it pushes both the back and the screen outwards making the device puff up in all directions like a balloon.
With my switch only the back is bulging out and the screen is being pulled inwards so it is warped like a banana ) shape.

Huh.... interesting. I guess the glass is not rigid enough on the Switch (larger surface area) vs. many smartphones and smaller devices.

I've been leaning towards the plastic screen being a problem, in many aspects. And I feel it may be the cause of most of these issues. As far as I know, no one has determined the composition of the plastic screen yet.
The expansion/retraction rate for temp variation could be quite drastic, depending on the material make up. And possibly in a quite narrow temp range.

Thanks for replying and noting that you did have a glass screen protector. Seems that may not help as much as I'd hoped. Bummer..

It's obviously a defect of a select few consoles or people are sitting on them, mines been mostly docked since launch and it's in perfect condition. Get an RMA.

The first person whom claimed their switch was bending and was warped, admitted he lied. Only after euro gamer proved he photo shopped his photo. Their hasn't been any official reports anywhere else since except for people resharing his faked photos.

I have had two laptops that constantly over heated during the summer months and they never once, warpped or became deformed, even with constant usage. Those laptops were slightly thinner then the switch. the switch has a better and bigger vent and fan then those cheap things i used to own. So do I believe switches are becoming deformed?, no I certainly do not. I would believe they would have a higher chance of their batteries exploding then bending and warping.

Got a link to that Eurogamer article? I haven't seen them mention it was faked.

And I agree with you (although not about it being more likely for the battery to explode, in general batteries are rigorously tested so it should be near impossible for that to happen even if they were subjected to force, even though it does happen sometimes)
I find it all really unlikely. But there have been enough reports that I can't just shrug them off as all being fake or caused by people sitting on their Switches or applying excessive force to them while gaming. It's possible that it's really a manufacturing defect causing some Switches to get excessively hot causing the bending. I just hope it doesn't turn out to be a widespread problem.

It could be caused by other issues like a malfunctioning cooling fan.

Yeah. I haven't heard my fan turn on even once so hopefully it's just that silent and isn't simply broken.

That's the exception, not the rule. From what I heard it was caused by them not leaving enough room for the battery to expand from heat (because of how every new phone these days has to be thinner and better than the previous model) so it was a fundamental design flaw. The Switch however seems to have plenty of room, the battery is held in by foam which will contract if needed. I do kind of worry about batteries exploding though, not just because of that event but because it happens sometimes to any device. Luckily I'm just as likely to win the lottery as that happening to me, and I'm probably never gonna win the lottery

I've heard that story too. But in the end I heard that it wasn't the batteries that were at fault after all (that's why they just pulled the Note 7 altogether), it was that there wasn't enough room for the natural expansion of the batteries.
It seems that might be wrong according to the page you linked. It might have been part of the reason, but it wasn't the main reason. The first problem was that the batteries inflated at all, and the second problem was that there wasn't enough room for them to inflate. But batteries do sometimes inflate, even high quality batteries, so I don't think it's fair to put all the blame on the battery manufacturers in this case.
Anyway, all the stories about batteries exploding over the years have given me battery phobia. Which isn't fun when so many devices these days use lithium batteries.

I'm not so worried about the screen peeling up, more worried about the bending. If my screen peels up it's easy enough to get it replaced, but if it starts bending I'll actually worry about safety.
