As in, a device that only does music?
("Discrete" probably isn't the right word, but can't find any other right now).

If so, what is it and wat is your reason for using it?

My phone has terrible hiss on audio output and only has 10GB usable storage, so I had to get a player.
And with how the battery is degrading, it also saves me from having to drain the phone's battery.

No. An Android phone is all i really need when it comes to music or audiobooks.
Phones do it all and they do it much better.

I have my phone, but I have been meaning to get one just for when I walk or go to the gym. What do you recommend?

I think the right word is 'dedicated music player'

I think most people will simply use their phones (including me); unless you are an audiophile or have a shitty phone

the word you're looking for is dedicated. discrete would be if it wasn't meant for music, but plays music anyway

My Pixel XL handles my music playing duties. I'm an audiophile and it's built in DAC sounds amazing.

Although, i'm in the market for a dedicated MP3/WAV/FLAC player at the moment because my workplace has just enforced a strict 'no mobile phones' policy :(

Ah that's right. Somehow slipped my mind.
It'd be nice if a mod could change the title to that.

One of those cheap players with a clip.
You can get them for ~$20. AGPTek is a popular choice.

You mean the snapdragon DAC which is usually regarded as mediocre?

but then you had a music player and your phone while running...
i can see getting a smaller and lighter phone to don't trouble while running but i don't see people giving away the "app player" and run with just a music player...

What's stopping me from leaving my phone at home while running?

Yeah, i was aware of that criticism of it, however it sounds pretty good to me through my audio-technica in-ear monitors.

As far as i can tell, there isn't an audible difference between the Pixel and my USB desktop DAC. I'm happy with it :)

Well, TBH when I walk around or when I am at work I normally just use my smartphone or my work laptop linked to my bluetooth headphones. That works fine, no hiss from bluetooth output /s.
When I am home I usually use a clunky old Pono player with better headphones, that overpriced shit sounds very good TBH, but it is far from portable.

So, do I use a dedicated music players? Yes, sometimes.
