Homebrew So what's the deal with Wii U homebrew?

I just hope someone makes a freeshop soon.

Someone privately made one, but wouldn't release it due to the slow download speeds.
If they release it, it would only really be usable for VC games.

And, that's what they made WiiU USB helper for. Download speeds only limited by your setup. I also set my download folder to be my sd card when I'm impatient, then I don't even have to transfer files after.

Does anyone else imagine the OP as Jerry Seinfeld? Maybe I'm crazy. I think there is actually a good deal of homebrew as compared to a little less than a couple years ago.

LOL, well now I do. What is the deeeeal with these homebrews? Why-don't-they-make-more-apps???

Yeah. Basically what everyone else just said.

Personally, I think that if we want console homebrew to stay alive, we need to start developing apps that enhance the system's built-in features, and not just basic homebrew apps, emulators, and the like.

Bam! That's what i was thinking!
Not only enhance, but add new features. I would like to see a homebrew which pushes Wii U to it's limits. [Example, real-time 3D world rendering benchmark thingy]

Any possibility they could enable Blu-ray playback like they did with the Wii playing DVDs. Or did Nintendo lock that up too tight?

Nobody is working on that. Still, if somebody is interested into REing Wii U OS then maybe we would get something like that.

...maybe...

Am i only one wish wii u can watch tv on it? With the game pad stand, is like a mini tv. :)

Also a basic file manager would be nice, easy way to install mods into the system storage instead of tricks like caffine sd, or something else.

Also please stop begging for freeshop wii u, i thought the idea here was discussing HOMEBREW not PIRACY. Two completely different things.

A small sampling of my List:
  • COSSubstrate - fiddling with module loading and code injection, stuck against everyone's favorite memory corruption barrier. There just isn't any room for homebrew in Cafe OS, it's all taken up by other OS crap.
  • I've got a Wii U in the mail and boot1 on the mind; which, may I remind you, was voted more important than a media player.
  • HID to VPAD Network Client - Bit of off-console tomfoolery; what I've been actually sinking time into. OOP is still weird.
  • I've also been thinking about Linux a lot lately.
  • hbl-web - Haven't worked on this for a while, but it is a thing I should remember to finish at some point.
(My actual List includes a section entitled "whatever the fuck else I get up to in my free time" which involves headless eMacs, synthwave, and broken CRTs.)

Sorry if I come off as a bit aggressive, I'm running on 5 hours sleep here. I was up half the night powering through a 2000-word essay and analysis PowerPoint (unusual) after finishing a maths exam. Don't get me started on last week, either.

I didn't even know about that poll.. but I bet you anything people would love to see a media player on Wii U.

That makes a lot of sense... would he privately distribute the release? I don't mind slow download speeds. I would just do it overnight.
It's not an overnight thing, it can be up to several days. It is NOT worth it. Just use Wii U USB Helper, it's not being released.

Why is there so little of it? Is the exploit not able to run things? Is the Wii U just difficult to code for? I'm confused as to why a 5 year old console has no homebrew that I'd actually use. Can the smart people fill me in?
Well, first of all, the Wii U wasn't terribly popular and so not a lot of people have one.
Because it's not terribly popular, there's less interest in it among homebrew devs, and most consumers with a hacked Wii U are only interested in piracy.
It's the same problem the Wii U has faced when it comes to commercial games.

Both of these things heavily limit the amount of homebrew being developed for it. That is even true for piracy-enabling homebrew. The Wii U has been thoroughly hacked since days after its release, but it wasn't until a bit less than 3 years ago that the first public exploit was released, and it wasn't until a year after that that it was made into something useful and homebrew started showing up for it.

So really there has been less than two years for homebrew to be developed for it, by a ery small number of devs, and most of those efforts were focused entirely on piracy-enabling. And now the Switch is out, so the Wii U is not going to gain any additional interest from this point on, and most homebrew devs with a Switch will be focusing their efforts on that instead, on making use of the browser exploit and even on exploiting the system further.

Two years is enough time for plenty of interesting homebrew to be developed, given that there are enough devs working on it (and not just ones who are primarily interested in piracy), but the interest in homebrew beyond piracy these days is already limited, what with all the smartphones and tablets that already do everything and which have already seen ports of all the interesting open source projects that normally get ported to homebrew platforms, and even more so on the Wii U, due to what little interest there was in it already.

Even the 3DS has not had a huge amount of homebrew, even though it's an extremely successful console. Things just aren't the same as they were back in the Wii days, before smartphones and tablets were everywhere.

Edit: Seems I got my facts a bit wrong (I was off by a year), corrected that.

In my case, its not that I don't like the Wii U (because I do, I can see its potential), but I don't have as much time to contribute as I would like. There are much more important things in my life that take priority over a simple hobby. Several other users are in this same predicament.

I bet we'll probably have more homebrews on the PS4 than the Wii U. LOL.

Anyway, the Wii U has so much potential. It's just a matter on how you creatively unleash this beast of a system. ;)

Maybe, gbatemp could set up a bounty system to heat things up. Or patreon or whatever works really just to stir the devs boiling blood in developing homerew for the system.

So was this post just asking about easy access to piracy or actual homebrew?

Just like @The Real Jdbye said, not many people have wii u cause it wasn't popular (obviously cause of sales) and only people who do have it only interested in piracy. For the record, PIRACY ISN'T HOMEBREW, NOR DOES IT MEAN SO.

Yes is true people do make homebrew, yes is true some homebrew allow for piracy, but is not the reason behind all homebrew content creators, there is some homebrew, i wish there was emulators (Not branded by retro arch) i would love for a snes9x port with the MSU-1 support, some HD filters, and multiple controller inputs. I'd like for genesis plus gx port from vwii to wiii u, emulator that can play sega cd, 32X master system and game gear. Playing rom hacks and even the pier solar and the great architetcs rom. (The actual wii u game i bought on eshop randomly freezes.)

Plenty of vwii homebrew i wish was ported but with no interest in the system or homebrew in general has no merit. Is just something only handful of people care about compared to ps4 xbox one, and others. It would be nice to see more homebrew for the system but many other stuff why it just isn't priority right now.
