I haven't touched my 3DS for a long time, and when I finally booted it up I saw that a new firmware was available, with prompts to update and all that.

I used RxTools for most of my time using this console, but it was suggested to me that I should switch to Luma / A9LH. I forget which one does which, but while my emunand no longer says Rx-anything when I check the firmware, my console still apparently boots via RxTools, occasionally crashing on the yellow screen. Is there anything I should know? I've been a bit out of loop lately.

What I'm worried about is playing FE Gaiden when it comes in Japan in emunand. Should I update the system to 11.3 (I think that's the new nand) and is it safe to do so, i.e. will emunand continue to function?

Many thanks.

updating to 11.3 is not needed atm, but you should change to luma and update emunand so you dont have any problems, A9lh is a very good step because you never bother to have crashes when booting cfw. For me emunand even with a9lh is a layer of security, most people will tell you to ditch emunand and use sysnand, but better be safe than sorry for me

System Settings say "Emu 11.2.0-35E", not RxTools anymore.

This means I'm on Luma, right? But not on A9LH?

So should I update emunand or should I not?

It's safe to update emuNAND on the latest Luma. But you should consider installing A9LH to get faster boot times, and be able to treat sysNAND as if it was OFW and update it without problems.

Any benefits to doing this? Other than faster/more reliable booting.
Advantages of A9LH:
Exploit triggers within a second of the console power on with 100% consistency. This means you boot directly into a CFW, lowering boot times to that of an unhacked console. It also allows you to launch ARM9 homebrew (GodMode9, Decrypt9, etc) before the system boots to the home menu, which allows you to recover from most bricks with a NAND backup without a hardmod. As a result of all of this, the general preference is to ditch EmuNAND altogether and boot SysNAND using an A9LH CFW, which makes GBA VC/DSiWare a lot less of a pain in the process and allows you to delete the EmuNAND from your SD card if you choose, freeing up space.

Downsides are that it's possible, especially through user error, to cause a brick during the process of installing A9LH. This has been greatly mitigated through time as advances in the tools used to install A9LH as well as the guide has improved. For users of Gateway, A9LH is dangerous as Gateway's A9LH payload does not include protection of the area where A9LH is installed to NAND, leading to the potential of bricks or A9LH being removed if used to launch SysNAND.

If you don't use Gateway, the risks are minimal and the advantages are numerous, which is why it's generally suggested.
