An 8GB Wii U will only have around 4GB of free space for games. For the vast majority of Wii U games, you're going to need a dedicated USB drive.

Edit: Let me be clear that 32GB is hardly big enough for multiple games either, so since you're probably going to want to use a USB device for games anyway, this isn't a bad deal.

Yes, you can use those USB drives for Wii U games. However, you do need an SD card. To install a Wii U game to your NAND or USB drive, you have to put it onto your SD card first. This means you're likely going to want an SD card that's at least 16GB. For some games, you'll need a 32GB SD card.

I only got the 8gb wii u, have a 32gb sd card and a 500gb hard drive. Have many many games as well as emulators and a few gamecube games, it all works fine, no need to spend the extra cash on a 32gb console. If you plan on making use of it you'll need a hard drive anyway

Hmmm, is there a good tutorial ? video based prefered.

Not very sure how to use the SD CARD / what you mean by using it

Many games aren't needed, I just had a spare drive lying around from my ps4 when I updated, 120gb will do and you can grab one of those for less that a 32gb memory stick

So i download the games on the SD CARD and i can install the games on the USB?

Once i download the game on the SD Card and i install it on the USB i can delete it from the SD Card?

Yup. You can throw the game on the SD card and then install it to the USB drive, and then delete it.

For reference, BoTW was 32 - 11 = 21 gb (that was the update included). I installed it to the NAND (as it is a 32 gb one).

What botw with the update is 13 gb not 21gb as you state. Or do you mean you installed it on a 32gb wiiu your not very clear lol.

It is recommended by many on the site myself included to never use a video tutorial as they are always out of date or full of wrong information.

If you really need a video tutorial you should at least take your time to double check everything from the video with the written tutorials in this forum's tutorials section. I'll edit and link to a written one from here.

I don't think there's anything you need to know really. Maybe make sure to not connect it to Wifi unless you really need to. I mean, you never know if Nintendo sneaks up an update tomorrow while you have it turned on.

Still your Wii U should be on 5.5.1 firmware. Check the system settings to confirm this. You can do a quick update if it isn't (given that you're not unlucky enough to have Nintendo post a new one tomorrow).

Edit: I found this guide which is pretty clear and good. Apparently made by Plailect and FlimFlam69:
https://wiiu.guide/

I recommend you to go the Haxchi way (which is buying one of the DS virtual console games. DON'T do like some other people and use a downloaded DS game...)

I believe it is 6,5€ for Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training ("Brain Age in US"). Gimme a sec and I'll check on Nintendo's store.

Edit: Yeah, it's between 6-7 €. I don't have my Nintendo account set to Euros.
Here's the Nintendo store page for reference: Brain Age

Here's the list of all the games you can buy that work:
Compatible Haxchi Games
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Big Brain Training
Brain Age / Brain Training
DK: Jungle Climber
Kirby: Canvas Curse
Kirby: Mass Attack
Kirby: Squeak Squad / Kirby: Mouse Attack
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, The
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, The
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Mario Kart DS
New Super Mario Bros.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky
Pokemon Ranger
Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs
Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia
Starfox Command
Super Mario 64 DS
Wario: Master of Disguise
WarioWare: Touched
Yoshi’s Island DS
Yoshi’s Touch & Go

EDIT 2:
An 8GB SD card might work. I'm not completely sure about this though. I used a 64GB and a 16GB, but I've seen people use down to 4GB SD cards.

Btw, this guide I gave you shows you the safest, but probably the slowest way to mod your system, since it uses RedNAND. I personally don't use it since I figure a NAND backup etc (: System backup) is safe enough. I'll see if I can find a guide that is more streamlined and without RedNAND (though most seem to go this way).

RedNAND makes you lose a lot of space too (it would be 8GBs in your case), so it kind of sucks in this sense.

EDIT 3:
I read through the guides and I figure the best is just to follow the one I used in order to install Haxchi, which is the original one made by FlimFlam69.
Do steps 0-3 of that one. In step 0 you don't need to download MochaCFW nor disk2app (since you will be using HaxchiCFW and Wii U USB Helper).
The vWii modding (step 7) of that guide is great. I did that step right after installing Haxchi (step 3). After doing the Wii steps you should follow this guide from the USB Loader GX part to get your Wii and Gamecube backups up and running.

For reference, this guide does the same if you follow it until step #4.1 "Get rid of Browserhax if you want ;)". Then you would do "Method 3 Haxchi CFW" to get into the mode that let's you install and run backups.

Another thing to note is that you shouldn't install Coldboot Haxchi (CBHC) until after you've used Haxchi and understood how CBHC works and the risks that are connected to it (which there are).

I also read that you can easily do with an 8GB card if you're not gonna use RedNAND, so you're good to go. However, if you want RedNAND you need at least a 16GB SD card, though there really isn't any reason to ;).

PS. I'm sorry that there isn't one definite guide online yet, but just get Haxchi installed and use Wii U USB Helper since it's the quickest and easiest way to get your backups on your Wii U. The page I just linked to has a good explanation on how to install it. There's even a video tutorial if you look at the "Tutorial" spoiler. Apparently there's a newer video tutorial coming out, but the old one is still good.

Yes, you will need to use Haxchi or Mocha to install and play Virtual Console games.
