To anyone who doesn't understand this, he wants to shut down the console using the Joy-Con.

@OP afaik there's no way to do that.
I thought I was clear when I asked to shut it down REMOTELY.

How could anyone else consider it remotely if the damn console is in reach?

If you mean by using the controllers, you can't.
Why would they have it designed like this? Isnt this going to cause more wear on the battery and more importantly the console itself. Never shutting down means the constant activity will needlessly draw out heat and electricity and shorten its lifespan further than needed. I like to think long term for all my investments and this seems like a flaw.

that kinda sucks, hope they add more functionality to the home button in a future update

If it's anything like the Shield TV, sleep mode is preferable to complete shut down. Draws next to no power and resumes in like 2-3 seconds with button press. Power down is available in handheld mode, obviously, but in docked mode it really doesn't matter...they probably did it to allow for background downloads. When docked the battery isn't in use at all once full. Power bypasses it straight to the main unit.

Assuming it's monitoring the battery while in standby mode you're actually better off not leaving it completely powered down at ~full charge.

Doesnt do any more damage. Its basic like a cellphone or table. That has been put to sleep.

There is no way to turn off the switch via the joycons.
It does not have an on/off like a ps4 or xbox1 or even wii u.
The os is design in a way to work this way.
It dumps to flash memeory so even if the battery dies you can recover your save state.
So no need to worry about the wear and tear or the battery. Sleep is very close to off

I kind of find it annoying you have to hold down the power button. I shut down all my consoles when not using them as a habit, and yea, Switch is the only one with no option from the controller or on screen.

I do not understand why even the most basic concepts are often the most difficult to understand.

There is NO WIRELESS remote that can completely shutoff an appliance AND then start up that same appliance from a wireless remote.
ONLY ancient WIRED remotes had that ability.
ALL wireless remotes (in order to restart a device) need the device in a sleep or standby mode to "wake up" at the press of the wireless button.
The main device basically sits idle (drawing power) asking "did someone press a button to wake me up? What about now?'" Etc.

If you truly powered off a device (totally) and then tried to start it from a wireless remote, it should just sit there doing nothing like a giant paper weight.

You cant use the joycons to turn off a console (in fact as long as it is docked the console will be on sleep mode). The only way is with the power button (in the console).

Because this is a non-issue with today's modern electronics. All sorts of smart devices are built and designed to run for years always being on without any issue. Heat and electricity will not be magically shortening it's lifespan, it doesn't get that hot or use that much power. Battery is a legitimate concern but even then today's batteries are much better, you get far more cycles with a lot less loss, its not nearly the problem it used to be with older battery tech. Much better than the what 500 charge cycles the ds system batteries were rated for.

That's not completely true. A third, smaller device that consumes power independently could power up the console after receiving info from the remote. The system would be totally off, but the small module would be able power up the system from a complete shutdown. then the remote could either switch to giving info to the console, or the third independent module could act as a relay.

Has anyone considered waiting for a update? This is obviously not a finished system, day one patch is probably proof. So maybe 3.0.0 will have more features. Sure now it seem like very underwhelming piece of expensive hardware (plus software games) but is no where near the complete state it should least have been before launched. So please consider giving more time to evolve the firmware.

Don't know why, but that reminded me to Hitchhiker's guide to galaxy lol
