Gaming Could a VPN just randomly fail to connect while I torrent? (ubuntu)

I'm downloading a 40gb game and I'd rather not wake up in the morning to find that I have openly pirated over half of it

Yeah it's possible it can drop the connection. You can take precautions against it though.

Most of the vpn providers clients have a killswitch function. Add the torrent client to that. Vpn drops and it will be forcefully closed.
Qbittorrent can bind all network traffic to a certain network adapter. Tell it to use the virtual network adapter the vpn creates. Even if the killswitch fails, if the vpn is disconnected, so is the virtual adapter.
Run the vpn at router level. If the vpn drops, nothing will be able to connect.

Or also the OP could just set it up with firewall commands
