Hardware New Thermal Paste Difference?

Bought a 2001A slim PS3 on eBay. Didn't use it much before busting it open, downgrading, cleaning and applying new thermal paste (Artic Silver 5, applied a small pea then let the heat sink spread naturally).

While I wasn't able to measure temps before (no cfw), I think I notice the fan being quieter. With that said, Rebug Toolbox usually displays temps from low to mid 60s after modest gaming.

Does this sound normal?
Was there a noticeable improvement in temps after thermal paste change for you guys (Especially when the paste was 8 years old)? Also, what paste did you use and what method did you use to apply it?

60+ is totally normal, even a bit on the low side. I often have 70-72 after hours of gaming.

It's worth noting, I haven't done a serious burn-in with the new paste. My temps were taken after 40-60mins of gaming.

Are your temps from non-stock paste? If so, what brand/method did you use to apply it?

I'm also using Artic Silver 5, after hours of gaming, the PS3 engine gets up to 74°C.
But the good thing is, you can control the Fan speed, I've set mine to max 75°C, so if the PS3 Engine hits 75°C, my fan will go crazy for a minute to cool the console down.

You can find the options unter the "XMB Webman Options". "Enable Dynamic Fan Controls - Auto at 75°C", "Lowest fan speed 27%","PS2 Emulator [If used] 37% Fan speed".


E:// And the louder fan noise comes from using a CFW. The PS3 gets a bit hotter while using one. Thats normal. Just adjust the fan settings and you're good to go.

I replaced the paste last night.

Before: CPU:53C RSX: 54C - This was in Dirt 1 for 11 minutes.

After: CPU:49C RSX: 56C - This is the same in-game as XMB. I've left it on for 9 hours and temps don't change now.

Fan speed is at 40% too.

you did not change the paste under the IHS, I guess. so changing it on top of the heatspreader does not change anything at all when the heat under it cannot reach the IHS fast enough.
there are YT videos showing how it is done the right way. very scary!



GOTO minute 5 and be prepared! one wrong move and your PS3 is toast.

so I get your efforts and they are good-hearted, but worthless! sorry. without delidding the two chips (RSX and CELL) there is nothing that you can do to keep your ps3 cooler and quieter.

nice video but that is the screwdriver is so long! it seems unnecessary.

IHS was also replaced... - Whole process took around an hour and half - 49C-57C core temps. I'd like to see yours on a slim.

but the problem remains: you do not change anything do your devices if you are not delidding them.
I do not know why companies still choose to NOT solder their chips to the IHS... wait... is it because they want the devices to get hot and not work anymore after a few years so we have to buy new ones?

slims always get hotter. that's in their nature (being smaller). so around 70 degrees is nothing to worry about.

I changed my fan speed to 40% and the temps dropped to CPU: 54c and RSX: 53c. This was taken after an hour of playing Catherine.

Your console runs about 5c cooler then mine, with the IHS paste changed. That's an improvement but I'm not sure if it's worth the risk in obtaining it... at least, not at this point in the IHS paste aging cycle.

Agreed, I'd just buy another PS3 non-hackable if it died I think. Games are cheap now anyway.
