ok so like the title says i have never played pokemon heck i barley know what pokemon is so do you think i should try pokemon if so what one should i try (i just got a gbc in the mail today with yoshi and yoshi's cookie) so please tell me a pokemon game that will work on gbc

I reckon you should try one of the pokemon clones first. Not sure what I would suggest for the GB/GBC though, I think the first robopon title is an option there but I mainly went for the GBA one and Dragon Quest Monsters also started on the GBC but I also went for the GBA one for which you will need a translation ( http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1252/ ). The Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children game is not fully translated and again I would probably look to the GBA versions (called demikids, the light and dark versions actually being quite different games and most suggesting dark version as the better choice).
If we are on the GBA then medabots RPG, there are a couple of Japanese spinoffs and the not so stellar fighting called called medabots AX but the RPG is one of my favourites. There is also a whole franchise of them on the GB and GBC (and later consoles as well) called medarot but translations are a bit thin on the ground.
The telefang series is one you might not be suggested so much because it is not so known, the second getting a translation a while back http://gbatemp.net/threads/telefang-2-full-translation-patch.346322/
Start going outside of things you can readily play on the GBA and DS then we can also look at things like monster rancher (some versions available on the handhelds) and jade cocoon.


If you are limiting yourself to the GBC and are not doing the clones that means the original pokemon red and blue, the slightly enhanced pokemon yellow and pokemon gold and silver, and another slightly enhanced version called pokemon crystal.

Where you start with those varies from person to person. The originals are not bad places to start but others consider the GBC three to be the pinnacle of the series, and others still would say maybe rather than the originals pick up the remakes of those (fire red and leaf green) on the GBA.

Maybe it's the fact I just woke up, but this kind of information doesn't rock my world. I assume you don't have a 3DS or any other Nintendo console apart from the GBC? I ask because I assume you simply never had the resources to play a Pokemon game, or you have and just found other stuff, because it's not all about Pokemon. For me it is, it's practically an everyday thing, trying to keep up with what goes on, breeding, catching along with soft resetting for the right pokemon, that takes up 99% of my play time. Right now on Sun for example, 555 hours and 8 minutes. It's similar with me and movies, I've never seen stuff like Casablanca and Citizen Kane, candidates for best movie ever made supposedly. Hell, the oldest movie I've seen so far is the original 1954 version of Godzilla. It can happen, never experiencing something that almost everyone has already, just shouldn't be negatively judged upon.

That being said, I'd go for Pokemon Yellow, I think it was the first Pokemon main series game made for the GBC. You have Pikachu as your sidekick, so some familiarity, surely you know the anime and who Pikachu is. Also, it's a Gen 1 game, simple to grasp the concept of only 151 pokemon, and then open the gateway eventually to 650 more. Downside is you probably won't have someone to trade with you so no Red/Blue exclusives, no trade evolutions, it wasn't until 2014 when I got multiple games and had multiple consoles that I experienced a trade evolution, and it was one of my favorite pokemon, Alakazam. It's a short game too, have to start easy. Crazy fact I never knew because I hadn't played the Gen 1 games long enough to notice or simply just finishing the story and not spending too much time post game. If your opponent is asleep, any recharging move has 100% accuracy, as in Hyper Beam! I think sleep also overrides the other major status conditions as well. That is crazy, maybe it happened to me in Pokemon Stadium but I never remembered, these are childhood games after all.

Anyways, after Yellow you can try out Gold/Silver/Crystal, Red and Blue if you'd like, hope you have the time. Given the limitations of the old games, for me they take notably longer to finish than the newer ones.

Your options depend on your available game systems.

If you have access to a GBA or anything else that can play emulated GBA games, like a PC or another game console, then I would highly recommend FireRed or LeafGreen. They're remastered versions of the classics.

If you don't care about the classics and you have a 3DS, I would recommend Sun/Moon, as they are the ones most actively played right now. Since a lot of the fun can come from trading with others, battling with others, and talking with others about it, Sun/Moon would be a good choice.

If you have to use the GBC, then I would recommend Red, Blue, or Yellow to start with. Optionally, you could also play Gold, Silver, or Crystal on the GBC.

In the end though, it doesn't really matter. Pokémon games are all mostly the same game regardless. However, I definitely would not recommend starting with a romhack game. Your formative experience should be with a real Pokémon game so people actually know what you're talking about.

It'd be the best place to start that shows you how future Pokemon games will work (if you're interested in continuing them). After that, if you have a GBA or resources for a GBA emulator, I'd simply go with the Gen 1 remakes and avoid the original gen 1 games altogether.

R/B/Y are a mess, you could literally clear the whole game with a single psychic pokemon no problem because the type was so OP and had few weaknesses.

One weard thing I found to be the best way to play a Pokemon game is to level your team evenly when grinding and to avoid using the exp share,otherwise you will make the game too easy and beat campaign too fast.

They're hardly "short", it still takes me at least 20 hours to beat the games assuming I only bother catching my team and that's it, and that's from someone who's played through the game at least 2 dozen+ times. Since the OP has never played one of the games before, he'll likely put a lot more time into it as he discovers which Pokemon he likes or dislikes, which are good and aren't, how/where to proceed, where/when to grind etc etc. If that is the case, then Gen 2 is better place to start since it better represents Pokemon in general now than RBY do.

Your main argument for avoiding gen 1 so far is typing based. I don't think the type changes are significant enough to skip gen 1 entirely.

I'm just stating my honest opinion. If I could go back and play any game first, it would a gen 1 game.

Now if OP doesn't want to play an older game with some aspects that would be considered broken today, then he can play gen 2 first. But I think if OP really wants to delve into the pokemon franchise - he should start with gen 1. He will never get the chance again to start gen 1 with fresh eyes, and he may never be able to get into it if he starts with a later game first.

Tangential example. I started the Zelda franchise with alttp, and now I can't get into Zelda 1 at all. I can never appreciate the game for what it is, because I've been spoiled by the later games in the series.

well i love pokemon and all the main series games. but to be fair the gen 3 remake of red and blue are just better.

if he has GBC console only and no way of playing GBA. well in the year 2017 idk.

Honestly this is how it should go. I strongly prefer Emerald to ORAS, but they're still good in the long run. The remakes are way better compared to previous gens, especially FireRed and LeafGreen

Exactly,Emerald is best in whole franchise..But I recommended ORAS too because I don't know his/her taste I mean ORAS Involves more major events in main story-line,3D Graphics,Gen VI Pokémon,Mega Evolution,Items,Day-Night System,Repel System,Online and several other things..

Typically I'd say try the latest, but Let's Go is a spin-off and Sun/Moon don't have gyms and are a slight departure from the usual norm in Pokemon games. So if you just want a traditional Pokemon game, anything ORAS and before is good. If you're gonna go all the way back in time and try the original Game Boy games, go for Yellow.
