You might be thinking of A9LH installations without OTP, which I believe turned out to be dangerous and problematic (must have been, it was removed from Plailect's guide). This was New3DS only.

Depends on the guide, honestly. The reason people, including myself, recommend 3ds.guide is because it has been proven to work, time and time again, which has garnered trust from people. Video guides aren't necessarily more dangerous (they can be, of course), but they haven't been proven anything like 3ds.guide has. Just be wary when following the instructions, and make sure to use your own OTP. The fact that you're following along with 3ds.guide is even better. So, you should be fine.

Note that the written and video guide probably differ at certain points; if you notice this, side with the written guide, as a general rule of thumb.
ok well i will ignore this guide then and find another as he was using a 2ds and im doing this for a new 3ds xl

i started giving the guide you gave me a read and focused on it rather than just skimming its much more simple than it looks seems like i won't need a video tutorial after all

Oh yeah, that 3dsguide is great. I read it a few times, collected everything I needed, and went for it. Worked first try with no issue on my n3ds. I'll be honest, my heart was racing. I was super nervous. I mean, Ive only had my n3ds a couple of weeks and I didn't want to fuck it up already.

Probably a good idea.
i just relised that guide doesn't tell you how to go back to firmware 2.1 i found it on the site but thats a huge step to skip

ok this guide has become pretty sloppy in my opinion seperating steps and not telling of steps might as well find a video at this point

If you mean, how to downgrade to 2.1, you use ctrtransfer (whole section for that).

If you mean, return to your original firmware, you just restore a previous NAND backup.

EDIT: Oh, and when you do install A9LH (through whatever means necessary), you can install CIAs you've downloaded online using a CIA installer, such as FBI.

Oh, I see what you mean. Yes, you can play CIAs online if you want to. And as for being an idiot, I don't think you are. The guide is quite long, so I can understand overlooking steps here and there. ;)

yes but now i have to run a check for corruption on a 128 gig micro sd card its already taken 3 hours or more
I hate to tell you this, but I don't think running that check is absolutely necessary. If you've already started, I guess just let it finish. I didn't run any checks on my SD card either time I installed A9LH to a 3ds, and both times turned out fine. Although, you could argue that that decision was short-sighted, wreckless, etc..

Well...at least you'll be 100% positive your SD card isn't corrupt. :P
yep the only 4 gigs arn't being tested and those are the files used for modding so they are already assured to be safe

ok I'm so new to this I have that new car smell.
So I followed this guide and did the soundhax https://3ds.guide/homebrew-launcher-(soundhax)
Then I played around on youtube and found fasthax fbi and I have that and I'm downloading a legit cia.

So what I'm understanding after all this "gobbly gook" in this thread if I would have noticed "to Continue to Decrypt9"
I should follow that and the next guide and the next guide. in the end it will have me downgrade and then everything non legit cia can run after I upgrade back to 11.2.035u and can still run non legit cia.
