1. Is this the same thing as the "Brazilian" method mentioned or are they two different things?

2. I often hear of a Wii U version of RedNAND that can be used to do whatever you want and you can install custom firmware, tickets, and other helpful things. But there is also the unmentioned instability that comes with using it on top of needing an unnecessarily large SD card to use it. Should I not bother making a redNAND and just do everything on the sysNAND if I know what I'm doing?

3. Can you also install DLC and play it with the USB loading method?

4. Is there any way to install games of a different region than your own? For example I would like to install Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko on my US Wii U could I do that?

5. How safe and easy would it be to do all of this? I'm pretty capable of following directions and I've installed arm9loader on a few 3DS systems before so if I can do that would this be just as easy too with little to not risk?

6. I dont know who or what SALT is but I often read about how they are coming out with some amazing homebrew that will revolutionize the Wii U homebrew scene (maybe I'm overselling it.) Should I just wait however long that may be and see what they have planned down the road or is this the best its gonna get in terms of game loading and overall homebrew capabilities?

Thank you for taking the time to read

1, same
2, up to you, I'm not interested in redNAND, stick to sys but wait and read: redNAND is easy to unbrick, sysnand is not.
3, in redNAND only I think
4, regionhax
5, if you can do A9LH this is easier.
6, I'm waiting, what's the rush?

I dont mind waiting for bigger and better but its the unknown that makes it unsettling. How do we know what they have in store is better than what is currently present and how much longer are we expected to wait for this "surprise". Its just a bunch of uncertainty and by the time it does come around my interest will not be as high as it is now.

If I can get a definite answer about that DLC I'll definitely go ahead and give this USB loading method a try. Should be a nice surprise for some family this holiday season.

Actually when it comes out it will be very high. Proper usb loading (a backup loader with usb support), mlc shrinking (not need a gaint sd card), proper tools with guis, ect

Sounds terrific but again how long are we expected to wait for this to happen, I can be pretty patient on good things? You've definitely got my interest for this if all the things you said are true.

Enjoy what you need now and switch up when something new comes out.

I've been using ezshare to host loadiine for months, now it's all about haxchi.

Play the long game :)
Sounds exactly like the 3DS scene where everyone was doing menuhax + rxTools/emuNAND setup before arm9loader + Luma3DS was a thing.

Thanks.

Last question for now, can I just plug the HDD USB in the Wii U to load up games, saves, etc or will that Y-cable always be needed?

Would be terrific to deal with just plugging in a single USB.

Depends on the USB HDD. An externally powered drive is obviously preferable but a USB powered drive will work as long as its power requirements are met. Try it with just a regular USB cable and see. If it works without every displaying the black USB drive disconnected warning screen then you should be good. From what I hear though odds are decent that you'll need a Y cable. Don't really see what the big hassle with using a Y cable is.

It doesnt have anything to do with costs or being lazy but simply rather dealing with less cable management. I just want to plug in one thing and be good to go.

I'm having flashbacks of the Sega Genesis/CD/32x setup already.

If I get this will I still need a Y-cable?

I really don't see the problem it's one cable that has two USB connectors that plug into the USB ports on the back of the WiiU. here is an example https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=y...for+external+hard+drive&imgrc=6c6tzU3yhZCNYM:

Cable management isn't really an issue with a Y cable. It's not two runs of cable. It's a single cable with a six inch lead coming out of the connector. The ports are right next to each other so there's not really any slack as the lead just loops back and connect right next to the main connector. It's not even like the patch cord between the 32X and Genesis. You won't even notice it.

I don't know if you'll need one or not. If it were me I would just get one but I'm lazy and impatient.

I use powered drives in my Wii U but I have set up two friend's Wii Us with USB powered drives. One drive would not spin up without the Y cable and the other spun up and was able to be formatted but I gave him an extra Y cable to use just to be sure. I will link the cable I used. The Wii U's back USB ports are spaced stupidly close together. This cable will fit perfectly once you peel off the Insten logo. It's a raised sticker.

Alright I'll get a Y-cable with a HDD later. Is there a technical reason why the Wii U needs a Y-Cable when the previous and much weaker system the Wii never needed the Y-Cable for the HDD albeit for non official reasons.

For all the VC titles to work in CFW, do we need to wait for users to share their legit tickets? Each title has its own specific ticket?

I found the answer from a different forum that I'll quote

"If you have a USB 3.0 external HDD, given that the Wii U console only has USB 2.0, the port cannot draw sufficient power to operate a portable external HDD with no power supply/adaptor. So to work around this, you use a Y-Cable to draw power from 2 rather than 1 USB ports to provide sufficient power to operate the portable external HDD."

The Wii U's USB ports simply output less current than computer USB ports or that of the original Wii. I think Nintendo did this with a power consumption budget in mind. It seems to be that they didn't intend for the ports to be able to reliably power a USB HDD as Nintendo advises using powered drives or Y cables. Another stupid design choice from Nintendo.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

i dont have an sd card adapter but I have an usb sd card adapter

it says it only works for the original R4, R4i Gold (r4ids.cn), R4iDSN (r4idsn.com) and Acekard R.P.G.

    nvm it does support mine

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
