I'm in a somewhat similar situation to DarthStorm, but different enough that I figured I'd make an account to ask. I've combed through all kinds of contradictory and outdated information and I want a straight answer before I dedicate myself to actually spending money on a product that flat out won't work because I missed something. Figured I'd ask in here instead of starting a new thread because, well, this seems like the place I should ask.

I want to use a flashcart for DS stuff on my 3DS. My 3DS is updated to the latest firmware as of this post (10.7.0-32U) because I basically decided to look into this just a couple days ago and am a dumb. I would rather not attempt any hardware alterations or force downgrades unless I have to, and I'm willing to wait for new flashcart firmware as long as I have to (as long as it's actually coming out :V). Far as I've seen, I might be able to get away with picking up an R4i Gold/R4iDSN as long as I'm willing to wait for a firmware update, but far as I can tell the firmware hasn't been updated in quite a while (assuming I've been looking in the right places). I do have an old shambling wreck of a DS Lite that should be able to run updates, but a handful of the buttons are kinda in iffy condition so it isn't great for actual gameplay.

My question is: Am I just being crazy? Should I just give up and shell out the extra money for a flashcart that's designed ground up for 3DS stuff, or can I make this work? Or have I updated too far and there's no turning back without downgrading or buying a new system?

If you get a cheap r4isdhc card (which is arguably one of the easiest to find) it will work on 10.7. At least, mine does and I haven't done any TWL patching. It can only do DS. 3DS flash carts won't be able to play DS games, Gateway can but you have to be on 9.2 (soon 10.3) for it to work at all, and Sky3DS only does 3DS games.

Edit: bought an r4ids.cn card from mod chips direct, I'll see if wood is as great as people say.

Hey, could you update OP and replace the Supercard DSTwo with the DSTwo Plus? It has a gateway clone mode. (3DS Games)

Hello i think in first post we should add two more very cheap cards to propose for new people. First one from this site.
www.r4i-gold.me/ or r4i-gold.com card.
This three cards are same, just different sticker.

Second card is from r4isdhc.hk They're compatible with newest 3ds(10.7.0-32) and dsi 1.4.5.

Maybe you think why i want to propose those cards?
They'r using akaio (wood) style menu named R4iNP OS or BL2CK OS software from this site:
http://www.bl2ck.com/kernel/ (press Bl2CK OS HK Card to download). This software is up to date , updated few months ago and supporting 100% roms and many hacked roms. Its nice deal. All right reserved to BL2CK software , just want to share this info , thx:)

What card would be recommended to play DS games?

I am running CFW Luma3DS on a N3DS XL

nowadays your options are either R4i Gold 3DS RTS from R4iDS.cn or the DSTWO, but I wouldn't recommend the latter due to battery-related issues on the 3DS.

you could also settle for a R4i SDHC 3DS RTS (WiFi) from R4i-SDHC.com but avoid R4iSDHC.com (no hyphen) flashcarts at all costs, namely Lite, Dual-Core, Gold, Snoopy and Upgrade.

There is no cart that can play DSi homebrew, there used to be on but it lost its support a few years back.
If a flashcart works on a DSi, it can only play NDS games and homebrew, unless you're using a DSTWO. That can play GBA and SNES games at full speed.
Many carts nowadays works on the latest DSi FW. Unlike the Vita, there was never a need to get an exploit game to use a flashcart.
The cart you linked is one of the shittiest ones ever. Pure bs if you ask me. Get an R4i Gold 3DS RTS from r4ids.cn instead or a DSTWO or DSTWO+ if you want additional games to play
And no, that cart cannot run NDSi Games. There was never a cart that could run NDS games.
I have brought the R4i from r4ids.cn. I have the wood kernel and everything works really fine. Thank you.

I'd like to get a flashcart for my newly-acquired DSiXL. I've had a look at the table and I like the DSTWO, but I really don't like its price - in Europe it seems impossible to get it for less than €50 shipped.

I wonder if there's a cheaper alternative. The DS came with the 1.4.5E firmware, so the cart needs to be compatible with that, but I don't need it to work on a 3DS or 2DS; my interest in portable gaming is limited and I probably will never upgrade from the DSiXL - so I don't particularly care if it's lost support and doesn't get updated with new game compatibility, as long as it works on my firmware and runs NDS games.

One thing I absolutely do need is savestates, and I'd certainly like cheats too. Running things other than DS/DSi games is not necessary, and neither are all the other bells and whistles (video, music and all that - I have a smartphone).

You won't be able to play DSi Games. It's impossible to do so now. You can only play DS games. http://www.r4ids.cn is your best bet

I was thinking about getting the DSTWO PLUS because it seems simple and can play SNES and GBA games at full speed.

Anyway, I don't care about playing 3DS games atm. But will this card work and be able to play regular DS Games on the 3DS with the latest Nintendo firmware?

If so, I'll probably buy it.

yes it will work for ds roms as well (the original scds2 will work for your needs as well)

So, Flashcarts doenst support DSi Games?
like... the camera? :C
correct . . . dsi enhanced games and dsiware are not supported by flashcards

I've just bought a Nintendo DS Lite after not owning any Nintendo's for a loooong time. Back in the day I had a DS Lite with a Supercard lite. Now I just want to do some gaming while traveling, so I'm looking for a cheap solution. On r4wood.com I saw an R4 card for 5 bucks. I'm wondering if this is any good? And there is some buzz about wood firmware. Does this also allow GBA games to be played with this card? It's been so long ago that I dont have a clue anymore on what to look out for. Any help is appreciated! :)

At least with a DS lite, you pretty much won't have to worry about having to pick up a modern DS flash cart. But it still stands that if you could pick up a DStwo(+), it would be the arguable best choice, in no small part not just because of its excellent compatibility, but also the extensive homebrew enabled by its dedicated internal hardware.
