You could at least write here what you want to know. If not no one can or will reply to you here.

Wasn't sure if I could or not. Okay here is the issue. I brought a n3ds xl that already had cakes and homebrew installed on it along with several 3ds games. I would like to if possible to be able to also have luma on it so that I don't always have to use homebrew to play all the game carts I've imported. I went to GitHub and downloaded the four files that had for luma and I believe I placed the files in the correct locations.

Anyways from homebrew there is a folder called 3ds, when I click on that luma shows up with the star icon and when I click on that it takes me to the configuration settings. I then press start and the system reboots and goes back to homebrew, but now icon for luma appears not like how it is for cakes. So I again click on the 3ds folder for, the main menu in homebrew and luma shows there and when I click on it it again takes me to the configuration options

Just in case this is where I got luma files from

You have to unlink nands /create emunand/delete all cakes files/install menuhax. Which one didn't you did.
Also did you put the luma, 3ds , boot.3dsx and luma.dat on the SD card root ?

You're not giving enough information.

Does this system have A9LH installed (I'm guessing not?) How are you launching HBL? Is menuhax installed? What firmware are you on?

You only need the Luma.dat on the root of your SD, the Luma folder (again on the root of SD), and merge the Luma 3DS folder. Idk what your 4th file is. Do you have the right firmware.bin?

Why bother with Cakes/switching to Luma? Both of these are updated regularly. Use one or the other to simplify. As long as you aren't using RxTools or older ReiNAND, you're good.

Is it not possible to leave cakes on it? Someone had told me that I should be able to have both cakes and luma and just be able to boot to which one I want. So nothing was deleted and I have no clue how to unlink anything. On the root of the sd card, these are all the luma related things I have there.
Luma3ds-5.4
Luma3ds.3dsx
Luma3ds.dat
Luma3dsv5.4-dev.7z
Luma3dsv5.4.7z

no, just use luma. luma is superior.
don't use the dev version. just delete everything you put there related to cakes and luma and just put everything related to luma3ds-5.4 (3ds+luma folders + boot.3dsx in menuhax folder on the root to be used with menuhax and the luma3ds.dat on the root)

So remove the luma dev folder from the root of the sd card? The only stuff I put on the sd card were luma related files. Everything else cakes and homebrew were already on it. Other than updating homebrew I did nothing else to it. So I really have no clue what I'm doing with custom firmware. Homebrew was the only thing I understood about getting on as I did that with my other 3ds, but I wanted a backup 3ds to play out of region games.

You have to extract the files... Probably don't try installing A9LH.

Sorry I was giving all the info I know. Homebrew launches at start up of turning on the 3ds. It used cubic ninja which has a digital copy installed on the system. I also have a physical copy. The 3ds firmware is 10.7.0.32u. As for the version of the other stuff, I have no clue. I bought this 3ds as is.

I did.

Thank you, but I think I will just leave it as it is. I don't want to screw anything up. It came with some cool games and I rather not lose them and I honestly don't know what I'm doing. I thought that if I could have both cakes and luma on it together and switch between the two then I would do that, but if that's not possible then I think for me it's best to leave it alone.

I did.

Then the only files you should have moved from your PC to the SD card are the green and pink highlighted items from the zip you extracted:

https://github.com/AuroraWright/Luma3DS/wiki/Installation-and-Upgrade

Like I said earlier, Cakes is still a viable CFW. I use Luma though, and I think the majority of users on here do as well.

Thank you, I look at that.

Awesome, I got it to work. And apparently there were some other games on here that installed themselves after luma got installed. Now if you could tell me how to have the 3ds load to luma menu instead of homebrew that would be great.

Also every in homebrew is gone. The only thing that is available is luma, no Hans, no mygba and so on.

I have luma working just fine, but everything else is missing from the homebrew menu. Only luma shows. Any idea how to get stuff like gba and Hans back

I already have it on there. Do I need to move the folder to a differnt location?

You need to extract the files (i.e. the boot.3dsx file and the 3ds folder) to your SD card, not copy starter.zip to your SD card. Is that the case?

It's already extracted. I think I know what the problem is though, I have it in older folder I had used for cakes. Need to move it to luma 3ds folder.

@Psionic Roshambo i didn't go amd for one specific reason, the AI performance is way behind nvidia

oh yeah also DLSS is a pretty solid reason to go nvidia since fidelityfx is kinda crap
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
and now with the rtx video upscaling, and sdr->hdr conversion, even more reason to go nvidia
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
both of which work well in potplayer
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
amd is a bit cheaper though
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Cheaper and they are less stingy with the RAM not a big issue now but I can imagine in a yard or two things might be different
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Year not yard lol
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the vram is one advantage when it comes to AI but ends up being slower even with that and really AI is the only use case that needs more than 12gb vram right now
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Interesting lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think I watched a video where two games at 4K where eating just over 16GB of RAM and it's the one case where the 7900XT and XTX pulled ahead (minus RTX of course)
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
cyberpunk at 4k without DLSS/fidelityfx *might* exceed 12gb

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but that game barely runs at native 4k
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding
    +1

When I played Cyberpunk on my old 2080 Ti it sucked lol
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
AMD could introduce something comparable to DLSS but nvidia's got a lot more experience with that
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
least amd 7xxx has tensor cores which the previous generations didn't so there is the potential for AI upscaling
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They have FSR or whatever it's called and yeah it's still not great
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
so AMD seem to finally be starting to take AI seriously
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Oh yeah those new 8000 CPUs have AI cores built in that's interesting
