I was thinking about installing arm9loaderhax on my 3ds so I can emulate gb, gbc, snes, nes, and gba games. Literally nothing else. So I have a few questions before I install a9lhax.

1. I am on the latest version 11.0.0-33U. Can I still install A9L?

2. Does it cost money? I won't spend over $10. Also, I don't own Cubix Ninja. Just OoT3D and Smash, along with a few other games that cannot be used for homebrew.

3. Is there a possibility of my 3DS being bricked? I saw EWNetwork's video where he bricked his 3DS and I was worried that if I installed a9l I would brick my 3ds. Also, I own an old 3ds xl, not a new 3ds.

4. Will I have to downgrade? And if so, how?

4.5. Will downgrading make me unable to use online services and play games that only run on the newest update? Because if so I'm not installing A9L.

5. Can Nintendo detect that I have homebrew and ban me from going online?

6. Can someone send me an easy and simple tutorial on how to install A9L and emulators?

1. if you're on emunand then yes, if you don't have a cfw set up then you're screwed (indefinitely)

2. Not if you already have cfw set up - it sounds like you don't.

3. yes there's a possibility of brick with any and every downgrade

4. yes, you will, with safesysupdater

4.5 no you can run emunand and update it

5. possibly, no one has been yet, so no one knows.

6. https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Get-Started

This was really more to humor you. If you're on 11.0 and have no cfw set up then you're screwed. The likelihood of a downgrade possibility coming for 11.0 at the moment is somewhere between slim and never. You can always use homebrew for emulators like gameyob though, or mGBA (though it's a little ineffective on the new 3ds).

Currently all homebrew methods are patched. Ocarina of Time 3D is supposed to be fixed soon but you can't put the save onto oot3d unless you already have a 3ds with homebrew, or a powersaves (which is something like 20 dollars I think I don't know I've never had to use one).

Edit: you can downgrade if you fancy yourself good with a soldering iron, at least.

Also, I had more difficulty coming into the wii scene than 3ds, but that's probably because I've been following the 3ds one more closely. I just followed some guide for that none of it made sense, I don't really grasp what cIOS really is. I should look into that at some point to understand it better.

I already own a powersave. Also, can you explain to me what cfw and emunand are? Also, sorry if I sound like a retard, but are homebrew and A9Lhax two different things?

Jeez so many answers if you'd just Google it.

Anyways:
1. Looking at your list of games, no. Oothax will eventually be fixed by smea so it'll would though. Although you still will have to buy Powersaves if you need to inject the exploited save file into Oot which can cost $20.

2. For you, it will cost a little bit of money (Powersaves). Is it worth it though? Yes. $20 for as many games as you want is completely worth it.

3. There is a possibility of being bricked, but it's been ironed out very well and if you follow Plaitect's guide, you should have no complications.

4. Yes to get from 11.x to a9lh (can't yet), you'll have to first downgrade to 9.2 and then to 2.1. It sounds risky, but it really isn't. I can say with high certainty that you will have no trouble.

4.5. Since you're going for a9lh, then you can update sysNAND to 11.x while still keeping the exploit and play as much online as you want.

5. If they cared: yes. Do they care? No. Nintendo's actually pretty chill. I wouldn't worry about it.

6. https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Get-Started

Unless you have a hardmod though, you can't downgrade from 11.x atm, so I'd leave it alone.

custom firmware is the stuff that does the patching, emunand is a clone of the stuff installed on the inside of your 3ds (home menu, system apps, etc) on your SD that you can mess with. Using arm9loaderhax you don't have to use an emunand, but it's still an option. If you already own a powersave, more power to you, just hold out for the Ocarina of Time 3D payloads to be prepped for 11.0 and then you can do homebrew emulators, but unless you want to take out the ol' soldering iron you're stuck at 11.0 indefinitely.

Homebrew and A9LH are different, on a number of levels. The question you really want to ask is Homebrew/CFW. Homebrew is userland, and can be launched from exploits like ocarina of time. Since it doesn't have full control you can only run homebrew things like emulators, etc with it, and it's all in the homebrew launcher. With CFW you have full access to the system and you can install stuff on the home menu, make VC injects, etc etc.

Arm9LoaderHax(A9LH) is nothing more than an entrypoint (like crashing ocarina of time, but on a deeper level) that happens before full boot. Not to discredit it, it is definitely very cool.

One last question. I saw cubic ninja at my gamestop for $30. If I bought that, could I install a9lhax? (Im not kidding. I saw CN at 2 gamestops near my house.)

It does not matter what entry point you use for Homebrew Launcher. There is currently no way to downgrade 11.0 without a hardmod. Also Cubic Ninja and OOT are both patched on 11.0. You'll have to wait for them to be fixed for Homebrew access on 11.0, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to downgrade.

no, cubic ninja is the same as using ocarina of time, it can't do any more or less than ocarina of time can, but you don't need powersaves to use homebrew on it (it's a primary entrypoint, versus a secondary which requires access before or an external tool like powersaves).

Again though, you can hardmod to get a downgrade if you really want it, there's a list of people that do it (though last I heard one of them was having problems doing them on time, ow) or you can follow a guide for that.

The moral of the story here is to not update your firmware unless you're safe to do it.

Okay, and will my normal save on OoT be ruined? I enjoy playing the game, and would hate to not be able to play it.

it will, but you can back it up with powersaves before. After you get into the homebrew launcher for the first time you can set up menuhax and then put the oot3d save back on your cart and play it like normal, then hold L on boot to load into the homebrew launcher.

You can get the GB/GBC emulator here: https://github.com/Steveice10/GameYob/releases
NES here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/3dnes-nes-emulator.369236/
SNES: http://blargsnes.kuribo64.net/
if I recall, mGBA comes with the homebrew starter pack.

I thought nenuhax didn't work anymore? Do you need OoT to install it, or is the installation similar to installing HBC on the wii? (cramming a few files onto the sd, going into inbox, etc.)

menuhax comes with the 3ds starter pack which you can find here: https://smealum.github.io/3ds/

I honestly forgot when it got fixed
you're right though that was in 10.6.
you do need OoT3D to install it, it has to be loaded from the homebrew launcher so you have to get a way into that first.

I guess it's a moot point though, if it's not working.

Other than the fact that they added extra enforcement into process9 to explicitly disallow this....IF we can ever break it, there's certainly no guarantees it will be as foolproof as previous methods (and we may never be able to break it...It's no longer as "simple" as gaining kernel access and downgrading blindly, there's sanity checks on the system's end that effectively kill the process if they see an older version of the system files being attempted to be installed).

I know that. Of course there's a chance that Nintendo created the ultimate shield against downgrading, but it's best to say there is a chance to appease the masses. Plus, I feel like eventually there will be a downgrade method.

I've installed homebrew on my wii before. It cant be that hard to hack a 3ds right?

I wouldn't go so far as to say HARD (well maybe since yours is on 11.x, and there is currently no solution outside of a hardmod...) If a software based downgrade solution eventually does come along, expect to sink the better part of a day into it, though, as it's heaps of easy but sometimes time consuming steps that need to be taken.

Since you decided to be a dumbass and upgrade your 3DS to 11.0.0-33 (a.k.a. the "Nintendo Is A DRM Whore" Firmware), you're only way is to get a hardmod and then downgrade, which will cost money, even if you do it yourself.
