right, but the point is that sites can get shut down or have some other things happen to them or the owners for directly linking to downloads for copyrighted content like paid programs or games, or for hosting them on the site. (or for posting links to sites that dare dedicated to the aforementioned activity) iirc back when gbatemp was a rom site, it was taken down quite often. i'm not 100% sure how often since i wasn't here when it happened.

GBAtemp is in sort of a gray area when it comes to certain aspects of the website. By not linking directly to copyrighted being illegally distributed we hope to avoid unneeded legal annoyances. It's mostly a safety precaution.
