I've been reading over the threads on here and various other sites to make sure I do everything correct.

I have a new N3DS XL with firmware 9.9.0-26u on it. I know from reading I should be able to install the browserhax and downgrade. I tried that yesterday, managed to get the browserhax working and ran SafesysUpdater. It failed partway through the downgrade. When I powered it back on, I just had black screens. Swapped out SD cards and the system came up fine, but no matter what I did, I could no longer get the homebrew menu to come back up. Then, I was not paying attention and accidentally updated to 10.6 which I know I cannot downgrade. So, I exchanged the N3DS XL this morning for another one, which is also on 9.9.0-26u so I'm back to square 1.

What I really want to do is use homebrew, install CFW and play 3DS roms, etc.

What are the best procedures to follow to do this? Some procedures I read say upgrade to 10.3 before downgrading to 9.2. Others say I should be fine downgrading directly from 9.9.0-26u. There seems to be many different ways to go about this and I just want to make sure I dont have the same issues I had last time.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I should also add that I have a new copy of Ocarina of Time arriving this week if that helps what I'm trying to do at all.

Thanks! And I can do that directly from 9.9.0-26u? I don't need to upgrade to 10.3 or anything like that?
There isn't any real proof that downgrading from 10.3 is safer then any other fw below this one. It's just a superstition: you can trust it or not, but you can't have a confirm that it's true.

So, I've got the HBL ver 1.10 loading no prob. When I follow the steps you mention to downgrade, I just get a blank screen everytime I launch sysupdater. I've tried this about a dozen times now. Wondering if I should try a different sysupdater or safesysupdater.

Are you using the modified sysupdater? And safesysupdater has a bigger chance to freeze or give errors ive noticed. When i downgraded my N3DS XL it took me about 80 attempts before it loaded up. But if you get the Hit Y to downgrade screen, let it sit for about 2 minutes before hitting Y to let it set up correctly.

Edit2- I put the modified sysupdater in a zip file on this message. Please make sure you have the right 9.2.0-28U/E/J Full.zip and make sure to check the md5 to verify you didnt miss anything. And if they match, extract the 9.2.0 zip file and put that onto your sd card. Just making sure you are safe :D

Thanks. I'll try that in the morning. I finally got the menu to come up (using the regular sysupdater - havent tried the one you posted yet) and when I hit Y it now gets to "Failed to get cia file info", so, I guess you could consider that progress. I'll try yours tomorrow and verify again that I have the right files downloaded and check it against the md5 again. Thanks for the help! I'll see what happens tomorrow.

Oh you already checked it? You should be fine if the update.zip file you are using matched the md5 :D Good luck tomorrow! And yes, memchunkhax2 likes to be unstable. It works when it chooses to. Just gotta keep trying. And the best way to help is if you get ftp-3ds, open that in the homebrew launcher first, the spam b until it exists and hurry and boot sysupdater.

Just wanted to say thanks to all for the help!

Biff627 - Your sysUpdate seemed to do the trick for me. I finally got it to start downgrading and it died part way through and told me to power off. I powered off and then it would only boot to black screen. Took out the SD card and it was booting fine (and it said it was on 9.2.0) so I reformatted the SD card, reloaded all the files and did the downgrade again. This time it completed successfully and I am dumping my sysnand now! :)

Manuel9181 - Thanks for the link to downgrade!!!

Now off to figure how how to install CFW so I can play roms. :)

I'm assuming I can just keep following this guide - https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki and that will get me the CFW I need to play roms, etc?
Hey ik at work atm^ but that is to get your OTP.bin which requires you to downgrade to 2.1 and dump it. If you want something simple, use menuhax, ctrbootmanager, and Reinand after making an emunand with emunand9. I dont recommend a9hl since you just started out with cfw's, but if you feel confindent enough to get your OTP.bin and use arm9haxloader then i would research it a little more and make sure you follow the N3DS guide 100%

Cool...........I'll look into what you mention. I'm new to CFW's for the 3DS but I've done this kind of thing on many other devices, so I'm pretty comfortable messing around with stuff like this. But, why go through all the hassle if what you mention below is a nice, simple way to do what I want anyways. :)

a9hl is very useful though, so if you feel you can do it and have backups of everything then you should be good. That guide you linked is the best way to do it. And as long as you follow it 100% it shouldnt brick. Cant say it wont brick, but it has a high chance of sucess even with the N3DS. I did it on mine and it went well. If you read into what a9hl provides it really is worth it xD

I'm going to give it a try and see how it goes. Worst case, if I brick it, I can exchange it for a new one since I just got this system the other day.

Well, I've made it successfully to the end of step 3 in the guide and now am able to successfully boot between sysNAND and emuNAND via AuReiNAND. This is fun! :) Onward to step 4! :)
