Alright, so I bought a 3DS XL that came with firmware: 9.8.0-9u.

I'm having trouble launching homebrew from the browserhax method. So I'm wondering can it be done on this model?

I'm using the homebrew starter kit (http://smealum.github.io/3ds/)

I'll list below what I've done while trying this:

  1. Open Web Browser.
  2. Click 'Initialize Save Data' and then clear everything until I return to the home menu screen.
  3. Re-setup the browser settings, then return to the home menu screen after it's finished.
  4. Hold L + R and scan this QR Code https://yls8.mtheall.com/3dsbrowserhax.php
  5. Then, I use the page zoom and press the slider bar. I press the box going to the right as far as possible.
After all of that I get an error message saying: "An error has occurred.

Please save your data in any software currently in use, and then restart the system."

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had this problem man. Except I was on 9.9.0-26u. I'm sorry I come bringing only bad news. The only way to get pass it is to use cubic ninja or oothax. Or a hard mod to downgrade to 9.2.

Do not update because u will lose all chances to install cia games. If you don't care about installing cias then you maybe able to get to 10.5 and use the browser hax method.

Luckily i was able to score a copy of cubic ninja from gamestop, then I downgraded to 9.2.

Browserhax is finicky. Keep trying and post your results. Also try bookmarking and using the URL rather than the QR code.

The only thing you can do is retry. I had to do this a few dozens of times before I got it working. I would strongly advise to install HomeMenuHax as soon as you got into the Homebrew Launcher, that would save you from doing that again.

I've tried doing it with, and without the QR code and still getting the same results. Can anyone confirm that browserhax won't work with 9.8.0-9u like @hitsndc suggested?

Browserhax works just fine on 9.8.

Edit: What do you have on your SD card as boot.3dsx that you're trying to load?

I'm using the boot.3dsx from the starter.zip I downloaded from, http://smealum.github.io/3ds/.

Should I be using a different one?
No this should work. Bu as I said, browserhax (sliderhax to be precise) is really a pain in the ass to use, but with enough try you may get it working.
You're doing everything fine but this works kinda randomly, you should install another hax as soon as possible, as this one is really unreliable.

No, that's what you want. Just keep trying. Some people have reported trying for over an hour before getting it. You should also play around with where exactly on the right side you click for the slider.

Alright, I'll keep trying.
When I get the "An error has occurred" and get kicked back to the home menu, should I just reopen the browser and keep click the right-hand side of the slider? Since the page loads again after re-opening.
Or do I have to clear the browser doing 'Initialize Save Data' and retry from scratch?

You can just re-open the browser, and initializing save data changes nothing.

Alright, so much faster haha. I'll just spam this for awhile and click everywhere on the right-hand side and hopefully something will happen.

Thank you all for replying and trying to help get this going!

Not to spread rumors or anything, but with Smea's hax 2.7 tweets today I'm seeing replies like
Will you bring browserhax back? I NEED TO KNOW!!
so when do you think browser hax will come back?
So browserhax issues right now might be related to this and not entirely uncommon.
There's probably a thread somewhere detailing this that I'm overlooking.

hey _c9, if they say keep trying, you can do it. I tried many man many times on 9.9 and I had no luck. I don't think 9.8 has that update nag that others and myself faced. But in the long run this is gonna start to bother you, the chances of you getting the browserhax to work are slim on your firmware. If it's Ez for you try to get a hold of cubic ninja. It just makes things easier!! I'm not trying to discourage u, but if you believe in it keep going.mif u want this to be over grab cubic ninja and be done. I hope u can get it the freeway tho. Free, is always a better option. I even made a YouTube video of mine..

Your system may have the browser, but it's not compatible with browserhax. I had the same issue with 7.2.0-4u. Your only option is to get a copy of oot or cn and use homebrew.

His browser version is .9. It has to be .28 or what ever the full 9.8 update contains

Thanks for all the replies and info.

I was wondering if I buy a new 3DS game, would it come with a firmware update installed on the cartridge?

Let's say I buy the new Fire Emblem game, would it come with an update of 10.2 for example?

Would be cheaper and easier than trying to find a cubic ninja copy.

Since I could upgrade that way instead of the normal System Settings way. Then install Browserhax, then downgrade?

When I get home I'll check my browser version and post it here too

Nvm, because if I upgrqded, then downgraded to 9.2 I would still be stuck in the same position trying to get home brew launcher installed again wouldn't I? Since browserhax (Sliderhax) wouldn't work on 9.2?

I managed to downgrade my 3ds from 10.1 using browserhax.
Browserhax is really finicky, but you just have to try over and over.
Initializing save data does help with the browserhax process.
I found it works best when you don't load any webpage besides the browserhax page. Meaning that right after you initialize the savedata, the 3ds will want to load a Nintendo webpage thing. Close the browser immediately before the page loads. Scan the QR code, which will bring up the browserhax page. Exit the browser, so the browserhax page will automatically load the next time it's opened. Try browserhax. After a dozen or so attempts, you restart your 3ds. Also, if the browserhax fails at an orange screen, you have to reboot your 3ds.

All gamecard firmware updates past 9.9 come with a dummy browser that disables the use of the browser unless you updated.

Browserhax works on 9.2.

You would have to check what firmware it would update to. In addition, most gamecard firmware updates come with a dummy browser that disables the use of the browser unless you updated, so I would avoid doing that.

So would OOT work with my firmware? I could get that, use another home brewed 3ds to change the save data on the OOT cart, then use it on this 3ds with 9.8?

I don't have any experience with OoT hax, but that should work from what I read.
I'd say keep trying with browserhax until you get the OoT hax set up.

I'm about to drive to a few local game stores and see if I can find cubic ninja or OOT. I have another 3ds with homebrew that I can use to edit the save data on OOT. Hopefully it'll work on this 3ds XL with 9.8
