Hello. I recently bought a new PS3 hard drive (500gb) for my ps3. Then I put the 3.55 updat.pup in PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP, but when I go to recovery mode and plug in my usb containing the update with nothing BUT the update it says it cannot find the update data. Any fix?

is the flash drive formatted as FAT32? If I recall correctly it doesn't read flashdrives in ntfs format

I think it could also be if it was on a higher firmware before you changed your ps3 hard drive you can't go back to 3.55. Were you higher than 3.55 before?

I may not be an expert, but that is not how it works. The version is stored on the hard drive so I got a new hard drive with NO version on it so to run the PS3 OS I have to put a version 3.50 or higher on it.

I thought it had to do with the motherboard storing what version it was on before or something. I may be wrong though idk

EDIT: Just found this, turns out the firmware is partially on the board as well.

The PS3 does have a small amount of internal memory, which varies by model; it isn't enough to store the full system software, I don't believe, but it is enough to know which version you were previously on.

What firmware was your PS3 on before you got a new hard drive, or was it hacked?

Try putting the USB drive in the right-most USB slot (the very last USB slot on the right-hand side).

My PS3 was a Rebug 4.78 (Latest) D-Rex

Guys I have a E3 flasher. I am NOT gonna downgrade using that again (unless nothing else works). Should I take my first HDD and try putting that back to 3.55 ofw and see if that helps?

Put the latest Rebug FW into a Folder called UPDATE into a folder called PS3.
The update must be named PS3UPDAT.PUP otherwise it won't detect it.
Flashdrive must be FAT32 etc.

Why downgrade to 3.55 anyway?, you can't without the Rebug downgrader or an E3 flasher.

The reason is that CCAPI only works on 4.76 so I wanna go there. Like my question says. Can I install 3.55 ofw on my other hdd and then be able to on the new hdd?

Nope you can't.
You'll need to install the full Rebug first, then throw the Rebug downgrader onto it and downgrade to 3.55, then update to 4.76.

My old hdd had DEX. Should I get the DEX rebug or CEX rebug?

No prob~
Personally I'd wait a few days till CCAPI gets updated to 4.78.
Rebug didn't took long to update (normally it takes a long time for them to update the firmware) so I bet that CCAPI also won't take long.

If you're paranoid about bricking the console, I'd suggest to do a NOR dump first from the toolbox.
Seeing you have an E3 flasher.

Edit:
Not sure if you can switch between D-REX and REX but take D-REX to be sure.

The old hdd is 120gb the new is 500gb. If I wanted CCAPI I would've just downgraded. Also I have NOR dumps on my ps3.

Wait, you want a dual FW?
That's impossible without having your E3 permanently attached to your console.

The NOR hold a tiny firmware partition that is on 4.78 (seeing yours is on 4.78)
No matter what HDD you throw against it, it always must be updated to 4.78
