32c3 hacking conference starts 27th December.

Preview_chaos_knot.png

This is a quick post to mention that the annual C3 hacking conference, this year being the 32nd of them, starts tomorrow (the 27th of December).
Though all years have things certain to be of interest to those that visit GBAtemp this year does also have a dedicated 3ds hacking talk set to happen on the 27th. GBAtemp already has a thread here. If you wish to discuss other talks and events then feel free to use this thread.

If you are not familiar with c3 then there are lots of talks from various hackers on a variety of subjects likely to be of interest to them, of late it runs for four days with multiple talks happening (and being streamed) at once.
You can view this schedule, aka Fahrplan, on the following link Fahrplan for 32c3. You can view a list and brief description of each talk on this link.
You can find information about streams here and if you would rather not watch them live then they will probably end up on youtube before too long.
The conference is put on by a German hacking group and is held in Germany so there will be some talks held in German, however a great many will be in English as it is an international conference. The times on the schedule will be those for Germany as well so if you need it then world time clock.

If you are sitting there wondering what it might do for you then if you have ever sat there wondering how hacks come to pass in the first place then many talks here will teach you aspects of this. Check out some of the talks from previous years, other conferences and such.

So then what talks are you looking forward to this year?

Apologies for the wall of youtube.

Ones I am looking forward to
The Ultimate Amiga 500 talk
https://events.ccc.de/congress/2015/Fahrplan/events/7468.html
Such things seem to be popular at previous conferences* and I do like me some Amiga games. Pity it happens to run alongside "Beyond your cable modem" but I can see that later.
*videos of such things

3D printing on the moon
https://events.ccc.de/congress/2015/Fahrplan/events/7336.html
Simple things you can't do as easily in space has long been one of the main things I find fascinating, hopefully this covers the problems that 3d printing might have. The speaker has done some good stuff prior to this as well

Maritime Robotics
https://events.ccc.de/congress/2015/Fahrplan/events/7265.html
If drones are getting nerfed in most places then it looks like this will be where I look to things.

Replication Prohibited
https://events.ccc.de/congress/2015/Fahrplan/events/7435.html
How 3d printers and similar technologies are going up against locks. To quote Mr Robot "The lock pick. Every hacker’s favorite sport." and as previously covered I do also like 3d printing and CNC.

The exhaust emissions scandal („Dieselgate“)
https://events.ccc.de/congress/2015/Fahrplan/events/7331.html
Through no fault of my own I have ended up learning more about vehicle electronics than I really car(e) to, this would probably be one of the bigger news items related to it all. tmbinc does some good stuff too usually so I am up for that.

Vector retrogaming
https://events.ccc.de/congress/2015/Fahrplan/events/7238.html
My present reverse engineering project (I might have the first pass up in the next few days) is an old radar screen I found at a car boot, hopefully I will get some ideas from this for what I can do with it beyond the obvious giant high powered second screen readout of an in game radar.

this caught my eye in the 3DS hacking "We also present how we figured out a hardware secret built into the console, and an early break in the chain of trust." my thought Smea and the others found a MASSIVE exploit one that Is NOT Patchable just my interpertation on that

Most likely they're talking about how they got the 7.x encryption key. Nintendo most likely fixed it on the New3DS and that's why their emunand is still limited to 9.5, but there have been no new encryption keys for O3DS.

I really hope they don't just rehash the old hacks. That 7x key was first extracted from GW's firmware anyway. I expect them to stay away from GW reverse talk for the most part given how those exploits are used primarily for piracy.
I think the hardware "early break in chain-of-trust" is something new.

My expectation is that smea will talk about ninjhax and gspwn, plutoo about arm9/arm11 kernel, and derrek for the new hardware stuff. Just a guess, we'll see what happens soon.

Anyway, FAST probably wants the 3ds discussion over in this thread, so maybe we should resume there. He doesn't like the 3ds. :P

You can discuss the 3ds talk here if you want, the other has several pages of discussion already though so it made sense to point people at it. It is true that I think the 3ds game library is awful and its homebrew potential at the level of also ran but I would not lose it from a thread like this because of that.

I'm pretty sure the usual crowd already had the keys, the "leaked" key was from gateway though yes, which they most likely acquired from a hardware exploit.

I'm really looking forward to the 3DS talk, but I'll probably miss it because of my early shift, but I'll definitely catch it later when I get home.

I think I will just watch some videos with interesting titles after the event on youtube.
OT: Oh.. This year the event will be in a train? (Fahrplan = timetable e.g. for a train)..

E:/ ,,NSA-Untersuchungsausschuss: Zwischen Aufklärungswillen und Mauern aus Schweigen"
and ,,Hardware-Trojaner in Security-Chips" does both sounds interesting. If I will get cold coffee at the first one I will just stop watching to that. But the second one will definitly be funny because I had mostly the experience that even if I though I knew much about something some guy at a CCC congress was able to tell me new crazy things.
I will try to watch that livestream about 3DS's security too but I don't expect new crazy things because Mr. Calvin is talking too.

Yes, the event takes place in a Hype Train. We are all too familiar with these here at GBAtemp.

tomorrow, this one could be nice : Evolution of Brain-Computer Interfaces. (16H00, 28dec)
but I'll be at work, there will probably be archives to watch them later.
last one I saw was the TED from 2010

I'm also interested in other events, like cryptology or reverse engineering MMORPG servers communication. (21H30)

Yeah that ted talk was probably the last time I saw anything relatively current, at least that did not involve being implanted. If we are all going to have headsets in a few years then I hope this sort of thing will be combined, possibly with some emotional stuff (headset detects you are no quite as on edge and triggers a scare would be awesome).

On the MMO stuff then I have really liked several talks on the matter from other conferences, mainly from a technology and hacking perspective

Unrelated but as I am slowing down browsers anyway
