Hello Gbatemp. I have noticed the gamecube subforum is still active, so I wanted to ask for help with this issue.

I have a Gamecube which I modded myself (with a XenoGC v2 chip). I had this console working for a short while last year, but it suddenly stopped reading games (at least burned DVDs.. cannot confirm retail games, since I lost mine a long time ago). I did a fairly whacky job with the Xeno chip, so I thought it was possible some of the soldering points desoldered or something, but I didn't have the time/patience to fix it.

This year, I wanted to play Twilight Princess so, I made my mind to repair the cube. I disassembled it and found out that effectively, soldering point 1 of the Xeno chip wasn't soldered. So, I fixed it (soldering it in the alternative point), and booted one of my back ups. It didn't work.

I assumed it was the laser lens that had died, because I left the Gamecube all this time without its cover (without the entire cover, so the lens was left to the air and dust, etc.), so I purchased a new one. I replaced it, played with the POT.. and even setting it as low as 90ohm wouldn't work (I don't want to go lower, since I don't wanna risk burning out the new laser). Newly burned games won't work either.

If the discs I'm using is an issue, I'll make sure to go and try other ones. The ones I'm currently using are Sony DVD+R (yes +R as opposed to the recommended -R, but these worked for a while before). The specs of the discs are the following:
Code:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:RITEK-F16-001]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD+R]
Manufacturer Name : [Ritek Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [RITEK]
Media Type ID : [F16]
Product Revision : [001]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V5.2.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The symptoms with either the old laser lens or the new one are the same:
-Console starts and starts reading
-XenoGC light turns on red, after a while turns yellow (yellow is normal and okay for v2)
-Laser keeps bumping like it doesn't recognize the disc
-Laser lens stops, the famous non-descriptive Gamecube error message appears on-screen and disc initialization restarts, as does XenoGC. From this point, it seems the console is now able to recognize the disc, but since the error message is already on-screen, it's of no use.

I'm willing to try other disc brands and other recording options. I'm also mildly experienced with soldering and tinkering with electronics, so I'm taking soldering/other suggestions too.

For me, I've found that my cube would happily play sony mini dvd-r burned games with zero changes to the POT. I picked up two spindles of memorex mini dvd-r, and had to tweak the thing. Interestingly, Imgburn seems to always produce good burns for me (at 4x), while burning from mac os x (mac user) directly gave me new coasters..
This is with a xenogc v2 as well, in a permanently regionswitched japanese console. Are you using ImgBurn?

my spindle discs:

It really depends on where the potentiometer was set in the factory. You probably set your laser way to low (90 ohms) and burned out the new laser. The laser should only go down to about 150 ohms I believe. If it is burned out, I would get a new laser off of eBay, as they are only about $7 and set the potentiometer now to about 200 ohms. Another way to know apparently if your laser is too low is that it causes rings to burn onto the discs if you don't have a multimeter to test.

Hey guys, thanks for your replies.

Yes, I'm using ImgBurn, and write speed set to 3x. In the past, these discs would also burn well and play, but ever since the console stopped reading them, it won't work anymore. I'm going to try new discs, though.

You probably set your laser way to low (90 ohms) and burned out the new laser. The laser should only go down to about 150 ohms I believe.
Well, I started with the factory value for my cube, which was 397 ohm, and started lowering. I do have a multi-tester, so knowing the values I'm working with is not a problem. Steadily turning the POT down wouldn't work, so I kept going. The laser burning the disc's surface is a possibility, though.
