So I have been using Gateway since they just come out, I have o3ds sysnand 4.5 and emunand 9.2. What are those custom firmware for and should I try to install one for my sysnand?

If i buy a "New" 3DS XL(LL) from japan, is it possible to completely change the firmware so that it's essentially a N/A 3DS XL? I've heard of the term NAND donor/swapping which i think might be it but i'm not sure. I could use Sky3DS to play region free ROMs but from my understanding there may be some issues playing English ROM with a Japanese 3DS XL. These issues may range from errors to the game playing in Japanese due to the system language. Is this right? Another reason for me wanting to do this is in case one day Nintendo has the 3DS locked down for good and i would like to play new N/A 3DS games(by buying them) that require updating the firmware.

Basically, they're good if you want to only use CIAs since they can't run .3ds/.3dz roms.
Depending on the CFW you use, some also bring some useful tools like decryption of files. And it's easier to play GBA/DSiWare roms from them since GW can't do it.
And since you can only boot GW Mode if you have the red GW card with you, it's also good if you ever forget to bring it. At least you'll have a backup way to play.
That's why I use GW and rxTools on my 4.5 O3DS.

Ask @Ronhero ;)

Hello, I have:
  • old 3DS with 4.5.0-10E firmware
  • New 3DS with 9.0.0-20E firmware and the same Emunand.
  • Gateway Omega 2.3
  • Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
I kinda stopped being interested in 3DS games for a couple of months but now I would like to get right back to it. The amount of information everywhere and various hacks/exploits is just overwhelming though. Could someone just sum it up, let me know how should I proceed to get my stuff back up to date? Is the current 3DS firmware exploitable or should I stick to what I have right now? Will it still run the latest games?

Both FW exploits I have are accessible via the 3DS menu, I'd rather steer away from the browser/QR exploit if possible.

I wanna buy a black or blue 3DS XL, what are the chances of it being <= 9.2?

Very slim to be honest and every day you wait it gets that much harder.

Best thing to do is have a credit card and keep ordering from amazon. As long as your a prime member you get free shipping and free returns. That's primarily how I do it

Unless you mean an old 3DS in which case it will most likely be below 9.2

Yes, I meant the older 3DS XL, not the new 3ds.

Then all new consoles will most likely be below 9.2
As for used consoles, you can just try to ask the seller.

I can get non xl for $110 shipped and xl for $150

And EVERY NIB non new will be 9.2 or less

Can I recover saves from an old legit 3ds backup? My old XL had a ton of saves on it and I backed up the SD card when I returned it, and it'd be great if I could get the saves back.

Any fix to play 3DS Japanese roms on Gateway? I just got a black screen and even tried the regionfree hack where you put it on the sd card

Unfortunately the saves cannot be recovered without having the same 3DS they were created on. The saves use per-console encryption so they can't be decrypted without the console that created them.

Japanese roms should work on Gateway by default. Are you using the latest Gateway launcher and the highest current possible emuNAND version (10.0.0-27 for the O3DS [10.1.0-27 breaks the multirom menu], 9.5.0-23 for the N3DS)? If not, update those two things first. If it's still not working I'd probably blame it on a bad dump of the game.

Edit: Gateway 3.4.1 has been released now which fixes the multirom menu on emuNAND 10.1.0-27 for the O3DS.

I just got a SKY3DS, I don't have private headers yet, can I just turn off the WiFi, write the games and play?
I don't want to play online at the moment... can I make the private headers, say a month later, and play online games without problems? Is it safe?

And is it safe if I turn on my WiFi later for buying/downloading eShop titles? (after removing the SKY3DS, and ofc as long as the SKY3DS supports the newer firmwares)

You can play offline without a private header with Sky3ds just fine and not to worry about it, access eshop and all that.

I don't recommend you doing that because when you get a private header and re-write the games your current savefiles won't be usable anymore, this is because Sky3ds will see it as a different game since the header is all the information about your game.

I did that mistake, bought an Sky3ds was so eager to play, wrote all the games on it, then wanted to play online and had to retart from scratch, unless it's a single player only, you should get the header first to avoid replaying the games.
