Pokemon Yellow added to first generation recompilation library, voxel mod updated to support "3Dish battles"

It's a good time to be a first generation Pokemon fan. But when was it not a good time to be one? In recent weeks we've seen a native LOVE2D recreation of Pokemon Red and Blue, allowing for easy porting and easy modding of the classic titles. Just yesterday the project got a huge update, bringing Pokemon Yellow into the mix, and since then we've seen a slurry of minor patches to fix bugs as they're spotted. The project by itself is fantastic, featuring releases for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and even the RG34XXSP via PortMaster. But where it really takes off for me is in the accessibility of its modding.

The voxel mod in particular stands out, transforming Kanto into a brand new 3D adventure. Now featuring 3D battles and a day and night cycle that can sync with real time, it's a fantastic way to re-experience the familiar scenery. With it being as easy as dragging a zip file onto the launcher, it's pretty easy to install too. If you've been fancying another look at Kanto, there's no better time to jump back in. It's still early days though, and I expect there's still a lot more to come.

If you're interested in trying this for yourself, you can find the repos for both the recompilation and the voxel mod linked below. Note as always that you will need to supply your own game dump.

So, apparently this is vibe coded. Someone took the existing decomp of Red/Blue, fed it into Claude, and told it to convert it to this language.

I'm sure its a neat toy, but actually trying to play it will show the flaws of this method. No "recompiliation" should have bugs on this scale, the whole thing is a mess and anyone attempting to build off it is probably doomed.

The "author" is now trying to hide it, claiming its all handwritten, despite also being a regular Claude user and the codebase being littered with Claude references.

Information from , I have not played it myself and I'm guessing nobody else here bothered either because it sounds broken as hell. Cool screenshots get you headlines, though.

"bugs on this scale" sir, have you ever played gen 1? this is less buggy than the base games it's built off of

Yes, I have played Pokemon before. This is not Gen 1 buggy, where everything is on fire behind the scenes but if you're not trying to break the game you will probably not notice anything. Honestly the memes about gen 1 are overstated. Put any weird game boy game of this era through decades of global scrutiny and I bet they'd have some skeletons too.

If there is a comparison, it sounds more like Scarlet/Violet buggy, except even that doesn't work. Those games had obvious glaring bugs, but at least they were all fairly minor.

These ones are more just basic mechanics being confused, being able to walk through trainers, Fly and Escape Rope sending you to the wrong locations... bugs that exist because LLMs are really bad at getting consistent results.

The Bluesky thread was one of the few places I could find talking about it, so uh, sorry? The information seems accurate, I can see the github changes where the author has tried hiding emdashes lol.

Anyway, my actual point is that something has gone very wrong if your "recompiliation" is introducing new bugs. That means its not working. It kind of defeats tbe entire point of these projects if your recreation is not recreating.
