You know that you can already solve your "problem" and run games from an external hard drive by purchasing the digital copies of games from the eshop? You can avoid discs altogether right now. This isn't a legitimate reason to want backup loaders anymore.

Ah, you mean you actually have to trust Nintendo to keep the service online? No thanks. I'd rather have my own backup copies rather than trust someone's archaic online service.

I also prefer physical games instead of digital ones. However, also also hate to change the discs all the time. The option to install a game disc would be great. But how should that work? If nintendo would allow this, everybody would just sell their discs after installation.

That's a load of rubbish. Nintendo's prices are often asinine compared to purchasing retail, here in Australia at least. It also doesn't solve the problem for those with an already large collection of physical games.
There's always going to be legitimate cause for USB loaders.

Hey guys, for all the "piracy" discussions and debates, I think there is a special thread for that. This one is for the updates about the actual hacking of the Wii U.
I want the backup loader as much as you, but I rather this thread to be clean for only information and updates about the hacking so we can actually benefit and learn.

To chime in on the digital purchase solution, i agree this would work. But i am a collector. I have been buying games/hardware since the days of coleco. I'm rather proud of my historic collection, and i'm not about to give up physical copies yet.

TBH i also dont know why people would ever buy digital, you pay the same or more if you get it used for just a download vs a cd with a cool cover to keep for the future, the hdd solution, you know you will never keep when your done with wiiu in afew years, you will just format the hdd and use it on someplace else and in afew years the wiiu network will be down and you wont be able to download the games again even if you bought them in the past, so yeah digital downloads arent stuff for the future.

The problem comes with how Nintendo manages the account system, it is tied to the console and not an account, so if your console, with the digital downloads, somehow stops working or gets stolen, good luck getting your downloads back for free. So yeah, I agree, digital downloads are good only if the games are tied to an account, not a console, so if it worked similarly to Steam or Origin, I would be all for Wii U downloadable games.

I beg to differ.
My account is used for both Wii U and 3DS.
If you delete the account from the 3DS, so is your Wii U account, and viceversa.

Same goes for savings, stored money, etc.
It's shared between the two.

Bad wording on my part, what I meant is on Nintendo's servers, a record that makes re-downloading them streamlined and painless. I've heard horror stories of people losing their consoles, getting them damaged and can't afford to repair them, etc. Never mind that it's shared between the two, the problem is that it should be tied to an online account, not a console. I have a hard time trust its being console-bound :P Steam is tied to an online account, that's how it should be IMHO.

Summary:

Downloads and account info tied to consoles = bad
Downloads and account into tied to server = good

Yea, but then they have to moderate more when people inevitably start sharing accounts to get access to hundreds of games :P They don't care enough to deal with that

Well, it'll be a cold day in hell before Nintendo does digital download management right, and an even colder day before I ever dare download a retail game from them :P Sorry, but I don't trust them in that regard, at all. I'll be damned if I have to repurchase a game I bought once.

They could do something like, when you purchase a game and download it, it'll have a special key that is linked to your account, so people will be able to play it only if they are logged in with the account that was used to purchase the game. maybe that'll require online access once at least.

Any progress in seeing how the installed games get installed in wii U ? like what was done with CIA in 3ds hacking scene, do you think kernal access can allow that ? or you'll need IOSU for that too, if yes, from the work being done by Hykem, is there any possibility the IOSU exploit would be ported to say 5.3.2 or 5.4.0 ?

But there is a record on their servers and it is possible to re-download --- even without the original console. It's not quite painless (in case of loss / theft, you have to contact them / prove your identity), but there is definitely a record on their servers to to an account (NNID). The horror stories I've heard were from the Wii / DSi days --- I've seen far more stories of Nintendo cooperating with people with the Wii U / 3DS.

(For the record, not trying to start an argument / say this setup is "good". Just pointing out that your wording still doesn't do the setup justice; there is an account system, but the system does not allow simple login/logout.)

Just like people do on other consoles? Got it.

I hate these lame-ass excuses that Nintendo users usually come up with.
Guys, seriously, stop the freaking "download/physical" thing here, this is a HACKING thread only!
There are whoooole dedicated threads for all topics being discussed in here already so go and have fun there... Thanks...
