Can you follow this process, then install a different installer like DevMenu/BBM, and then re-install the real Health and Safety App? And then write the emuNAND image to sysNAND?

Yes. But you don't need to do the whole process again to reinstall the H&S app. Just download it the 3DNUS and install it with devmenu_2x.This is the titles ids/version of the original titles :
JPN : 0004001000020300, v2050
USA : 0004001000021300, v2031
EUR : 0004001000022300, v3077

That's just how it works, when loading DSiWare or GBA the console has to reboot and switch from native_firm (3DS) to agb_firm for GBA or twl_firm for DSiWare, in that process the console lose its emunand access I guess. Your options are doing that or having both NANDs linked.

Other option is to set up palentine cfw...that works fine, but obviously still has some issues. I've done this and can confirm it works without installing a bunch of stuff to sysnand.

Emunand only, if you want to install cias on your sysnand to you have to flash your initial emunand (with FBI injected) in your sysnand before updating it. (Reminder : never flash an emunand updated while in gateway mode)

I suppose you could reinstall Health & Safety after you're done. It's quite useless though. I actually uninstalled it on one of my nand images awhile back. Only reason it's back is because I restored an older 9.2 image so I could get my NNID working on sysnand again (as my other copy kept giving me update prompts even with the eShop spoof). I've just been to lazy to uninstall it again.

Hello all!

Posting my results with Gateway/rxTools/sysupdater attempting to update my o3DS sysnand from 4.5-6U to 9.2-20U.

1. Use Gateway to install FBI to SysNand
2. Use rxTools to install sysupdater using FBI
3. Launch sysupdater using rxTools with all the 9.2-20U files in the "updates" folder on the SD Card.
4. Brick!

It was installing the CIA files at first so I left it alone, I went back later and it was just a black screen (battery didn't die)

So if you're looking to update your 3DS to a specific version, don't do what I did!

1. backup nand using gateway menu, incase u screwed (aka bricked)
2. create emunand using gateway menu, the emunand should be the same as your sysnand ver, in your case 9.0
3. download all 9.2 fw using 3dsnus, u will get around 100+ cia (make sure u select new 3ds)
4. go to emunand, launch fbi and install all cia. u should received an error saying file already exist, just ignore and proceed until finished.
5. reboot to emunand, u should be successfully install 9.2 into emunand. make sure u're able to boot successfully
6. use emunandtool (window application), extract emunand into pc.
7. rename the emunand to NAND.bin, put NAND.bin into SD card
8. go to gateway menu, highlight downgrade option, hold UP key and press A to launch restore.
9. restore and after your restart, your sysnand should be 9.2

For now, you need gateway if you want amiibo features. Updating home menu without native firm will cause trouble.
Maybe rei-nand will be out soon though.
