Just a heads-up, I blocked the Wii U update via my router and the following URLs:

nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
nus.cdn.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
nus.cdn.shop.wii.com
nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net
nus.wup.shop.wii.net

and the update was successfully blocked but even though I can see other players in Splatoon, I also can't connect to the online lobby with it saying there is no internet access. So it seems that everyone really has to make a choice between homebrew and online gaming :/

I could set up a donation fund for testing NAND dump/restore if anybody is interested. We could by a console with a broken drive and I would test on. I would even give out incentives. Something like donate more than x dollars you get a mod if successful just cover shipping. Set up something similar to a kickstarter fund.

its cheep as hell to dump and flash the nand. there are shitloads of tutorals on the net. just look up PS3 nand downgrade and pay attention to the wiring and pinouts and use a teensy 2.0+
as long as you have a valid nand backup from 1st use you can flash it back (unless the system has eFuses)

edit: If you use a nand clip, you don't even need to solder anything to the wiiu just clip on dump and flash to harts content.

I will pledge $20 for the cause. Might need a few broken consoles to test on. Iirc there are also some banned consoles floating around on eBay for cheap, that could another option, right? :)

Okay I figured out how to play Splatoon online atleast for now without updating or risking to update:

1: Block the update with your preferred method
2: Load Splatoon
3: Go to the lobby and let it sit on the screen where it asks you to receive the latest news
4: Disable your block and let then let Splatoon go on
5: Quickly enter the lobby in Splatoon and select the game-mode you want to play
6: Then block the update again

As long as you don't close the game you should be able to play Splatoon normally now :)

There were a few other factors. There is actually 2 NAND banks, and are unsure if they are tied to each other in some way. I am also unsure if the 8GB/32GB are stored on the same chip. I know how to dump NAND/NOR from other consoles. I have a progskeet, a RasPi, picflash usb/spi dumper, and a couple of other devices. I wanted to test read/write/downgrade. Also note that this does not necessarily need a NAND clip. I believe it is eMMC. I think it can be dumped similar to the 3DS.

Yes. another option would be if the controllers do not sync. As long as the WiiU boots, I can test read write.

the eMMC is starnderd and can be dumped with an SD card reader

note: eMMc is not a nand

edit: you might even be able to replace eMMC with an sd card

Don't rely on OpenDNS alone if you can help it. I also use my router's filtering to block those domains. Then I set up an exclusion for certain IP addresses in my home subnet. And that one excluded IP is reserved in the router for my New 3DS. So everything that uses DHCP in the house will use an IP that gets filtered. Even if OpenDNS fails because my ISP changes my IP address, the router still serves as a last line of defense.

I have been asking for a while now. I could easily pull it off, i justbdont have a wii u. I have already dumped the nand of a wii u previously and plus i was rather well known in the wii brick repair area. Ifbsomeone wants to help me get a wii u then i will get to work. I havevall the tools.

The WiiU and 3DS uses a NAND chip with an eMMC controller. We tried to replace the 3DS NAND with a mSD card to no avail.

I have the tools and WiiU. Just not the balls to test on my own machine. Did you dump it via the eMMC pinout?

I would have no problem doing my Wii U if I had confirmation of it working. I would even document the process.

These are the exact URLs I used to "block" updates and my console auto-updated -_-

We already have the pinouts. All the hardware is documented. That is not the point. The question is can a WiiU be downgraded without adverse affects? We do not know if they figured out e-fuses. I've almost convinced myself to try based on the fact that I believe if they could implement this, they would have on the new 3DS.

EDIT: The way I see it, one of 4 things will happen.
  1. I fail. No more Wii U.
  2. Write fails. Corrupts NAND. No more Wii U.
  3. Read/Write works, downgrade fails. Stuck with upgraded Wii U.
  4. Success! I provide service for others similar to 3DS.

good point.

edit: If there were eFuses not every update will burn/blow them. they usually save eFuses for important updates. just tossing this out there

edit: if the on board memory is the only thing that is changed during an update then I can see no reason why this would not work.

I think Nintendo wouldv'e burned one at 9.3x on the 3DS. That is when they implemented keys that blocked emuNAND on the n3DS.

I have downgraded many n3DS from 9.x+ to 9.2.

i am still on 5.2

i hope that the 5.3.2 exploit works on 5.2 because it seems that the 5.2 is the odd one out here

Haven't played my Wii U in a few days (and it's unplugged), really glad I came to this thread to see that the update is unsafe. Can not wait for progress on this. I can practically taste the Wii U homebrew

I agree. if ever there was a reason to burn them on 3ds than that was it.

edit: fingers crossed that the wiiu's cpu has none :)
