So I obtained the cia from 3DNUS and want to update from 8.1J to 9.2J, can this be done installing the cia using the gateways devmenu? If so, how safe is it?

If I launch in Emunand will only the emunand be updated or will it be Sysnand? I ask because I mainly want to use customizable themes but cannot as I am stuck in 8.1.

If launched in emunand, emunand will be updated.

Man everyones doin all this complex stuff

1) Go to http://3ds.essh.co/
2) find a game with the firmware you want
3) go to any store with a half decent return policy
4) pick up the game
5) go to the car/bus/helicopter
6) put the game in
7) agree to the forced update
8) keep the game or return it with some excuse (cheapskate)
9) don't brick your system with complex stuff

if you don't have the technical knowledge to try and do risky stuff with your 3DS, DON'T DO IT!

I couldn't do that. My browser version was incompatible with Ninjhax.

ok but the question the guy had was updating his sysnand to 7.0 - 9.2. If you honestly have to ask how to do something so risky your better off using the safest option.

(also how does your browser version have anything to do with updating your sysnand off a legit cart?)

so it will go to desired firmware than latest

Yup, I would turn off net to be sure but I used codename steam to update my emunand to 9.4 just yesterday (since 9.6 isnt N3DS compatible yet). No reason it wouldn't work the same for sysnand and a game with a lower firmware
