So, that was a bit of a shock for me today, but as it turned out... I just won a N3DS >_<
I dont have it yet, but I assume, since it's the small white european version, it will not be on the new 9.6 update, but a lower one. I have a regular old 3DS on 9.5, and I can't do anything on it as far as I know, in terms of homebrew and backup loading. But what about that n3ds?

What soft number will it probably be? Lower then 9.5? (first print, small white retail PAL n3ds)
Is it possible to do anything on a new 3ds in terms of homebrew or backup loading (other then sky ofc)? Can I run the gateway luncher on it? (no... I don't have OoT and I dont have Cubic Ninja :< )
Do the QR code hacks for pokemans work on new3ds?
Do I need to update both consoles to the newest soft to do a system transfer from my old 3ds to the new one?
What about region-free? anyway? any luck?

I know I have a lot more questions about the differences in what can and can't be done on the n3ds, I'm so confused right now. Sorry for such a noobish post, srsly.

UPDATE: The 3DS came in today. The software is 9.0.0. What can I do with it?

It could be less than 9.5 but as far as I know you'd need the serial number to confirm its initial version.

You need Oot or Cubic to run Gateway. Sky runs fine and can act as those two, however.

Browser exploit used for pokehax was patched by N3DS

System transfer requires both on latest firmware, as it goes through Nintendo servers.

If you get Gateway working or NTR-CFW (Cubic/Sky only, no Oot) you can have your region-free, albeit not on the latest version.

Wait until you see what firmware is it on and ask again.
In terms of hacking it, generally you can do almost* whatever an o3DS can.

*there are some stuff that you can't do on a N3DS and there are some stuff you can do where you couldn't do on an O3DS, too lazy to list the differences, find about the firmware first

If I were you, I'd keep the O3DS and use that for Gateway. Then just use your N3DS for the exclusives such as Xenoblade Chronicles.
The N3DS isn't so easy to use Gateway on since you need a game such as Zelda OoT or Cubic Ninja as users said above. Those can be quite expensive!
But yep, if your N3DS comes with anything 9.2 or lower, you should be set to use Gateway on it. If not, don't sweat it. Just buy the N3DS exclusives and you'll be fine.
If anything, Sky3DS works perfectly fine on the N3DS.

1. Buy the N3DS exclusives
2. Try to get ahold of Zelda OoT or Cubic Ninja (good luck)
3. Get a Sky3DS and live happy ever after :P

The first production run came with 9.0 so you should be able to do pretty much anything if it's from that batch. You can even dump xorpads, region change and such now (requires Cubic Ninja though)

I would suggest getting a GW and a copy of Cubic Ninja (not OoT since CN is more capable as several homebrews already support it such as Decrypt9, NINJHAX and more)
As you are in Poland, it's worth mentioning that while OoT3D is rare in US, it seems to be very reasonably priced over here in Europe. Still, CN is more worth it considering everything you can run besides just the GW launcher.

QR code hacks will not work since they're designed for the o3DS web browser and the n3DS uses a different one. You can decrypt your saves with SaveDataFiler and modify them in any way you like with a GW though.

You'll need to at least run the latest emuNAND on both consoles in order to system transfer, your sysNAND doesn't generally need to be updated, but in the case of n3DS there's no way to run emuNAND with the latest firmware yet, so it might be better to either do a manual system transfer by dumping certain files from your o3DS NAND and injecting them into your n3DS NAND, or using GW to dump your games as CIA, SDF to dump your saves, and install everything on the n3DS. You don't need a GW to do the former, but you do need Cubic Ninja. I would recommend staying on the firmware it comes with if it's 9.2 or lower, it leaves open the possibility of using homebrew, hacks and Gateway even if you don't plan on buying a Gateway or a copy of Cubic Ninja right away.

You'll need a GW to use region free, because RegionThree also relies on the web browser that only the o3DS uses.

That's true. OoT can still be bought like a regular 3ds game, but cubic ninja? I don't even see them now, let alone buy one. They vanished the moment they started being usefull xD

And yes, I will be keeping my old 3DS at least for some time. Thanks for the tips!

It's not that easy, I have to get a OoT or Cubic Ninja as well, right?

Oh yep I forgot about that part (I personally got CN when the huge hype started so I always tend to forget that it's even needed). Yep you'll want to get one of those 2 (preferably CN). I would suggest getting CN before getting a GW (just incase).
