Basically I'm pretty sure I know how to decrypt a game, but isthere an easy way to reencrypt it. I want to store the decrypted ones in backup form maye try to compress them somewhat, and then reencrypt them when I'm actually going to play them.

not really, easiet way would actually be ripping the entire rom then manually rebuilding if you need them at a later date......suppose the best method would be fully decrypted and extracted, with a batch file automatically setup for rebuilding after extraction

to re-encrypt properly you would need the xorpad too which would defeat the point which i assume is to get them as small as possible

maybe one day we will have a way to play just plain old decrypted titles rather than encrypted or zero key encrypted......not sure how much space will be saved in all fairness by doing this, try it out and see what kind of results you get

What would be the point in reencrypting them? The decrypted versions can be played just fine.

Well if old(er) ds games are anything to go by, most of the games compression is only using lz77 for compressing assets so I should be able to save at least half of the space and at worst ~10-25% but with them encrypted even zero-keyed they're still going to compress worth crap.

Are you sure that they can be on r4i 3ds gold ultimate platinum chinese nwe year edition?

well not really, a fully decrypted rom cant be played, only zero key encryption (which would have pretty much the same file size as standard encryption).....but for the sake of science i just tested it out with NSMB2 SE,
normal encryption trimmed size size = 342mb,
normal encryption compressed = 342mb
zero key encrypted compressed = 359mb (i think i had a few extra files in the romfs folder)
plain fs with all files required to rebuild as zero key'd rom = 240mb
(all just best compression rar, so other compression methods may vary......plus it will obviously vary from game to game)

so yeah ready to be rebuilt roms fair better, file size for just plain decrypted roms would probably about the same as the plain fs, but more complicated to re-encrypt when it comes to playing it again

I still don't get why rar is soo popular with scene and other people, it sucks and doesn't have an executable, multimedia filters applied to the corpus. 7z would be better but I guess it's close enough. What's SE stand for?

NSMB2 Special edition (the one with the dlc built in) what i have been looking at atm so just what i had ready to test with....as for raring i figured it was best to just use the "standard", but it proved the point anyway like a 33% saving of space

Do all of the carts out there work with zero keyed games? If so, I guess I would be willing togo through the extra effort to at least storethem for archival reasons.

nope, sky3ds will only work with properly encrypted games, zero key'd games will only really work with gateway/clones and cfw
