Hey, long time lurker, 1st time posting. I recently got my 1st gateway in today, ran through all the steps in order to boot into gateway with Cubic Ninja. Once on the Gateway menu, i proceeded to back up systnand then used the format option (I wasnt going to mention backing up systnand because i formatted right after, but may be relevant) . After finishing that, I ran the boot into gateway mode as you would.

I went and checked system settings, I read GW 9.0.0, proceeded with system update to get the emunand to 9.5. After that finished, the system resets, i check system info - 9.0.0 still (yay, good), run through cubic ninja into gateway mode again.

So im in gateway mode, make sure to check system info, it reads GW 9.5.0-23, (I read that once i updated that i can pretty much proceed on how i want to use my 3ds), I then go into the eShop, but a message appears stating that a SYSTEM update is available (using bold on system because at first i wasn't thinking it through). I figured it was going to update the eShop so i can go about using it.

Well, after that ran and the system restarted, As usual, I go into system settings out of habit and there it is.. "Ver 9.5" Now i'm betting there's absolutely nothing I can do, I just felt my heart sink a little because I was actually excited to use Gateway for the first time, but what i really want to know is what went wrong?

"What went wrong?"

You accepted an update through the eshop instead of through system settings and updated your system nand.

If you have nand backup you can do a hardware mod to flash your sysnand back (search).

Going into the settings menu and exiting will boot you out of emunand, and back into sysnand. Sorry, there's nothing that can be done at this point, except getting a new console, or a hardware mod.

Two things :
-Exiting System Settings restarts the 3DS (and so kick you back to sysNAND)
-Updating via eShop ALWAYS update your sysNAND

What happened is you accepted an update via the eshop. You must only update in the settings. Your only option is a hard mod.

If you checked system settings and saw 9.5 then backed out of system settings to go to eshop, your system rebooted to sysnand. That's just what system settings does. You should have suspected something when you got an update prompt when you were supposedly on 9.5 emunand.

This honestly should be a more prominent warning on Gateway literature but, in the end, it is your fault for not being prepared and well read on GW usage.

If you ran through all the steps of the guide then you would have a backup nand. But from reading your post again it seems you intentionally skipped over the important part of moving that backup nand to your computer. So the only thing you can do now without a backup nand is to sell it and get another one.

You're right, but watching Mrmario's videos and him using gateway, that's what had me going to check the firmware version because he does it in the video. Granted this was for firmware 4.5

Haven't watched Mrmario video but did he go to eshop directly after exiting settings? That could be the issue you had.

I've got it now, the best option for me is to wait it out or go for the Sky3ds. My Wife paid scalpers for the MM3ds because i was such a fan, so im not getting rid of it. Appreciate the info, next time i wont shoot myself in the foot.

Nope, that's the part that i messed up on, i never would of thought going to settings then backing out would reset to sysnand. My fault on not reading enough.

Did you have a backup of your NAND ?
If so, you can downgrade with an hardmod !

I feel your pain more now didn't know it was a MM 3ds. Get a sky and sell your gateway or keep it. But at least with sky you will be able to play backups.

A tip for you is that AFTER you update emunand do not do anything until you change the theme on emunand. For instance, leave the theme as default on sysnand and then in emunand change it to something else, for example black. This way when going into eshop you will know which is which by a visual.

Smart, never read that before. I know all information like this is out there, it's just all kind of scattered. Appreciate all the feedback and everything, guys.

There is one thing you can do, if you are willing to spend some money.
Buy another 3DS with <= 9.2 firmware on it and swap the motherboards, then resell the other 3DS.
Apart from that there's not much you can do without a NAND backup.

I know its been said, but I feel its been said in fragments so Ill recap here:

When you go into settings, itll show "gw xx.xx.x" But when you LEAVE settings, it will boot you back into SysNand, the real one. You would have to go back into gateway mode, THEN update accordingly.

What you did was, go into GW mode, settings, came back out (which leaves you in sysnand), go to the eshop, it asked you to update (because its still 9.0 in sysnand) and you updated it.

What you can do now, is sell your N3DS, hopefully for not much of a loss, and get a new one while the time is simple to get a new <9.2 N3DS. I do feel this is the best and quickest option.

I guess I could sell the MM3DS on ebay and buy a new one for maybe a $20-$30 loss.
