Yes, Hykem's got the 5.3.2 Webkit exploit working in a VM and now we're trying to port it to work on the latest version, then as mentioned before we'll probably clean up Relys' updated build system and then (no promises but) we'll release that all as a package and move on to polishing up the kernel exploit.
EDIT: Also, if you wanna block URLs, here's all the ones Hykem found:
  • nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
  • nus.cdn.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
  • nus.cdn.shop.wii.com
  • nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net
  • nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net
Should still allow online play but block updates.

Wow! Wii U homebrew and playing modified games are getting closer to reality.

Heh, not only that! I'm waiting for an awesome Media Center like we had on the Wii. Back then it was very very low powered tho and couldn't even handle a normal AVI video file well ;P

That's what I've been up to, whence the silence. I'm finishing up the WebKit exploit first instead of back-porting the existing bug like I mentioned before.
This makes more sense since this bug is very likely to work on all firmwares that have the Internet Browser, so that part should, hopefully, be finished soon.

By the way, it's unclear if the next update will be 5.4.0, 5.3.4 or something else, there's no confirmation on that yet.

Slightly off-topic, but the announced "NX" project resembles more of a framework solution with some kind of new hardware basis rather than a new gaming console. I wonder if it's related to Nintendo's browser's user-agent string (NX/3.0.3.12.15)...

From what I've seen this (if done right) can be a massive improvement for all sorts of applications. It'd probably be best to get an IOSU exploit for that so you don't have to stream over the network, but it seems like a way more powerful system. It should also be possible to do stuff like playing music in the background over other applications with a kernel/IOSU exploit, and do stuff like in-game chat properly :P

Or maybe an in-game doodle pad like on the 3DS?

Would be cool for Mario Kart ;P Just blank out the track music and play your favorite music just as you wish over it! Or even web radio, let's see what the Wii U community will come up with this time. By the "end" (and with end I mean the time where people made lots and lots of Wii homebrew) of the Wii homebrew scene we got so many awesome things to play around with, I can't even imagine where we're going here in a few months!

Why is everyone excited? It's still far away from being useable for any homebrew related stuff and I highly doubt there will be anything like a homebrew channel in the near future.

Why we're excited? Because this is one step further to the real beginning. Everything has to start little ;)

Now we might be able to have an exploit on the latest Wii u version, and now it's possible to play modified games if you have the disc(Don't know about the eshop games).

I would be so glad to beta-test this whole thing on an European Wii U (because I'm from Austria ;P ) but I guess nobody needs that :D
