So since I bought my GW I have used only CIA's as using headers seems like a pain and I am wondering why do people bother with them, why not just buy a 16/32 GB sd and just use cias?

Because I don't want to convert my legit dumps to CIA and install them?

I guess for legit dumps you could use the card but for people who don't do that cia's are just as easy to find.
I think Roms are just more convenient. Drop them on your SD-card and you're good to go. Installing sometime seems to take forever. And the headers. Nintendo could ban us for CIA-usage too. ticket.db-validation.

for convenience
.3ds files are much easier to find, drag and drop on the card, no having to install the cia's, for the few online games- with gateway rom patcher it only takes seconds to change the header

The reason for me is that installing cias takes such a long time and converting 3ds files to cia is such a tedious process. I personally have to do it like five times for each game because I get an error message after trying to launch the cia most of the time

Another very important aspect is (and I read this somewhere), that say for example you have 20 different roms and only one original game. You can literally take that private header from the original cartridge and insert it into those 20 different roms, and you're good to go online.

HOW AWESOME IS THAT? :D

There's hope for a Xenosaga port.

I consider CIA better, as they make the battery last quite longer, specially when you suspend the 3DS.
You just enter Gateway mode / emunand, take the GW out of the 3DS, and forget about it.
2 x Battery life (where 2 is more likely something around 1.3, but anyway, more battery life)

Hmm, gotta give it a try when (and if) I get my Gateway :)

I have heard from someone else that when they fully charge their 3DS, its battery lasts around 1 hour longer without the card in compared to with. That could be a problem depending on your schedule, but for me I usually get home way before my 3DS dies out, so I'd rather just use .3ds files.

CIA's aren't safe from bans. Nintendo could theoretically check if you own an actual eShop copy of the game before letting you play online.

Using a private header looks a lot more legitimate from Nintendo's side. It's a unique ID for a cartridge that no one else is using, so it is less likely to raise a red flag.

To really be safe though, you would want to use your own ROM dump with the game's original headers. This method is the most likely to be undetectable by Nintendo.

Some people don't want to risk being banned from online play. They are willing to go through the proper measures to have some assurance that they'll be less likely to be banned.

This.
I noticed that the gateway cartridge drains the battery a lot so I downgraded and I use CIA now. I also don't need Wifi for the browser exploit.

Sure, if they've built in mechanisms to check for this. No one really knows what they can/can't ban for. There's some suspicion that use of public headers is a cause, but as of currently, there's no way to confirm that they even have a mechanism to look at your ticket.db (it'd certainly seem logical, but then again, this is Nintendo, historically they've been...well less than on the ball with this sort of thing).

What exactly is ticket.db? I thought cIA's use your hardware's header? In which case what can they possibly find? Your hardware's header is unique...

I'm sure that using 3dz with a private header is much much much much much much much much much much much much safer than using CIAs online. It's only a matter of 'when' Nintendo decide to ban pirated CIAs, not 'how'.
It's probably quite possible for them to detect running an emunand, but spotting that someone is running a CIA on a console with no purchase record for that title, or worse yet a CIA of a game that has never been available on the eShop would be so easy to spot it's not even funny.

And you think 3ds and 3dz files emulated off of a Gateway looks exactly the same as a cartridge? It doesnt, it looks even worse than CIA!

CIA should be very easy to detect and ban.
I think Nintendo is (for some reason) just attacking Sky3DS and Gateway is taking damage only as collateral.
Perhaps they think Gateway is already dead for them, as it doesn't work on the last firmware and also it is not so "easy" to use compared to the almost fool-proof Sky3DS.

Probably they think of the Sky3DS as something that could expand like the R4 in the DS era.
