Hey guys, I just bought a cheap 3.55 Slim PS3 off of eBay, and I'm checking out the guides here and elsewhere, and they all seem to be very, very out of date.

So, what's new? Do I still need a legit game to be in the disc drive?
Should I still use Multi Man?
Is there a definitive and up-to-date guide that I'm missing?

Cheers.

Yea many of the guides are outdated but that does not mean they're not applicable. Even now, generally the guides still work mostly like Cyan's MultiMan Guide.

Not really unless you need to use BDMirror for certain black screen games.

You can if you want to. There are other options like IRISMan and Sonic Game Manager. Just depends on your preference. They all do the same thing, just different design.

I made my guide back in the summer of 2014. This was before the dawn of ODEs and I know practically nothing about the new Cobra machine so not adding it in. It's all info pertaining to Custom Firmware.
I don't really update it that much anymore since the truly fundamental stuff won't change. (Unless someone somehow makes CFW out of anything over 3.55, it's going to be similar stuff for a good while)
Cheers.

Thanks for the reply, appreciate it. I have a few more questions if you don't mind. I'm currently waiting on my 3.55 PS3 to arrive tomorrow.

1) I'll be on OFW 3.55. I have Rebug 4.65.2 ready to go, and I have IRISman ready to go. These are both waiting to install on my FAT32 drive. I have bought, and, uh, "backed up" Red Dead Redemption and Heavy Rain. However, Red Dead Redemption contains a file that is larger than 4GB. I have used PS3SPLITTER to transfer this game to my FAT32 drive, and it has successfully split the problematic file.

What are my options with Red Dead Redemption? Do I have to now install it to the PS3s internal HDD? Is it possible to run the game from the external drive anyway, somehow? How do I go about doing one (or both) of these things?

2) I've heard that a CFW named COBRA can run games off of NTFS external drives. How does it do this? Are there any drawbacks? Would you still need IRISman?

Edit: After some reading, it seems that COBRA CFW + ISISMAN is the way to go. It allows me to keep my game drive as an NTFS, thus solving the file size issue. Before I get too excited, are there any drawbacks to this method?

Appreciate your help, this is all quite confusing, ha.

I am in the same situation as you
I just bought a pS3 Slim on CFW 4.6-something, multiman and Showtime are all ready inside.
Since i know that on the hack scene many people just do many dagerous things i want to change my hack configuration and install the absolute necessary to play my backup games and why not play on the network to share my trophies.

play my backups on a NTFS partition without issue will be so great.

Waa, haven't been on GBATemp for a while.
For files over 4GB, you can split it, then transfer the files to HDD to unsplit them. You split the files, put the split files in their own seperate folder and "Cut" it to anywhere in HDD will rejoin them. It's all a huge pain tbh

I personally use FTP with an ethernet cable to direct transfer files from my laptop.
