Anyone wanna help a guy out here? I really want my old saves back and to have emunand on my new sd card

**Update! I formatted the new sd card and put my old Nintendo 3DS folder on it and booted up the console an Animal Crossing is present, the question I now have is, can I make a new nand backup/emunand and just transfer my saves to the new emunand and be peachy?

See the section named ".cia files (all) and eshop games" for how to transfer cia/retail eshop saves from sysnand to emunand.

I don't want to play it in emunand unless I have to? What's the easiest way to do this. So far I haven't done emunand again yet. I have a backup of my old emunand, but I think that will mess up everything no? What's throwing me off as well is that when you make emunand it erases everything on the sd card. Am I suppose to copy my backup back to it then to restore my game saves/eshop game?

Well, you asked how to move the saves to emunand, and instructions to do that are in the section I mentioned. If you haven't created an emunand yet, then yes, you should backup your SD card before doing that, and copy the files back after it's done. The SD gets erased as a by-product of the way GW creates the emunand partition.

Sorry I should have been more specific I meant my Gateway rom game save files (the .sav files that are on the root of the sd card). If I make a new emunand and update and put the .sav files on my root the roms should recognize them no?

As far as I know, the answer to that question is yes. I guess you'll find out for us :D

You can share under some restrictions. Option 1. All games are cia installed to the internal SD and you just use the GW for booting into emunand. If you boot into classic mode to use a retail cart you will need the red card to boot back I to GW mode. If you are separated who gets the red card?

Option 2 3ds and 3dz games on red card but only one of you can play at a time. Buy a timer.

I have two boys, neither of those options is acceptable to me. I look for ways to reduce the chaos not incite it. ;). When my boys play SSB they are pleasant and I can relax, when they play NSMB or 3D world together it is a knock down screaming melee.

Bookmark 3ds.essh.co, you will need it for title IDs, updates on carts and encryption.

So I can boot emunand with my GW on my sons 3ds, then remove it and have him play with CIAS on his console without the gateway inserted?

As Mr. Jason said the answer is yes. However, if anything goes wrong and you drop out of gateway mode you can't get back in unless until you have the red card and WIFI. Battery dies, system freezes, game glitch, need to switch between classic and gateway mode you have a temporary brick on your hands.

Ok I made the emunand, readded the old folder and.... nothing Animal Crossing is now not showing up :( What did I do wrong?

Should I have readded the folder before I updated the emunand?

When I dump a sav file, does it only work with a rom that I dump from the same cartridge, or can I use the sav with a rom I downloaded somewhere else? I'm trying to dump my Fire Emblem: Awakening save with no avail, I get a corrupted sav error.

I don't see anything about save types on the database.
Hmm I thought it was there. I know I have seen a table with it. Pokemon and Animal Crossing are card 2

Here it is. Go to the gbatemp wiki "3ds flashcarts game compatibility" has good info. Can't paste on iPad. :(

If you have the cart and try to dump the save from the gateway menu a card 2 game will give an error.

It sounds like just moving everything to the bigger SD card should work, as long as you never at any point formatted your 3ds.

Nope. The fact that it saved on the SD card as .sav files means that they are probably card 1 games, and you can't currently use savedatafiler with card 1 games in Gateway mode. I really wish you could.

A more simple way of putting things is: If you start your retail game on sysnand >6.0, it won't work on 4.x. It goes the other way around too, if you start your game on sysnand <6.0, it won't work on >6.0. This is only true for games that use >6.0 encryption.

That can't be true at all... Imagine how many problems Nintendo would have had when 6.0 came out with games that use this encryption. 6.0 can decrypt 2.0/4.0 saves, but it will re-encrypt them as 6.0 saves after saving.

By the way, you should put something in the guide about converting your games to card2. All my .3ds games are card2, and it's awesome - they work perfectly with savedatafiler (only if you convert the game BEFORE playing it, that is). It takes literally 1 second to convert a game to card2 (there's a tool), and I very much prefer to have my games like that.

Can I mix it up? Cause my main intention with using the Gateway was that single player games will be played as a .3ds rom and multiplayer games will be played as a .cia. We are fine with only playing one at a time, we can sort it out however it's the cia files that are confusing me. For example, if I play a Majora's Mask .cia on my 3ds, then give him the gateway to boot emunand and my sd card, will he keep my save files? And be able to create his own file (cause there's 3 slots available to create files)

Also can he play retail carts on a separate SD card and be able to have his files on there too? So in order for him to play a retail game like pokemon he doesn't need to have my SD card?

I'm pretty sure games pre-6.0 just never use post-6.0 encryption, regardless of which sysnand you use to save. Nintendo resolves the issues with post-6.0 saves simply by forcing you to update to post-6.0.

Could you point me to a a resource for converting .3ds files from card 1 to card 2? I'd certainly be very interested in that if it works properly, but didn't find anything with the searches I did. I'll add it to the guide once I understand it.

Edit: Nevermind, I found myself. Info about converting .3ds files to Card 2 type added at the end of the .3ds saves section.

I have the following scenario. I'm running sysnand 4.2 and emunand 9.4 on a 16GB microsd. Somehow when GW launches it says Omega 2.1. I have a 64 GB Microsd coming and I would like to somehow "redo" this. Is it possible upgrade my sysnand to 9.2 (and not 9.4..I doubt this) and get my GW to 3.01? Currently, I can't install Big Blue/DevMenu or cia files and I would like to put other emulators on at some point. I'm hoping the New 3DS systems will be supported by GW as I hope to upgrade. Any thoughts?

You cannot switch the SD card between systems. The emunand is tied to the system it was created on. You will need separate SD cards. That solves your save issue with cia files. You can share the mSD card in the red card. The card 1 games save to the SD, card 2 games (Pokemon, animal crossing and others) save to the rom so those you would need to share saves. I suggest you each have your own SD AND mSD cards.

Retail carts do not save to the mSD or SD so nothing changes.

Amazon has good prices on Sandisk Ultra and Extreme cards as well as the Samsung Evo.
