I have tryed to open that damn thing all day. Hairdryer, damped towel, simply opening it by pushing a screw driver in and tilt it to open. I'm almost giving up at this point.

How come you never had warranty?

I think that's kinda... well, what's the word?... stupid? of them, no offense. I don't think it's the users' fault if he drowned the 3DS on apple juice while the dog chews on it and the children throw it at some giraffe or something.

Actually, now that I think about it... Yeah, it's the users' fault. Still.

I purchased it used with old firmware on it. I'm sure that there was warranty on it once. But that is only going over a year anyway.
I don't blame anyone but myself. But i also find this fun and interesting even if it costs me some money.

I always was curious to use a 3DS for repairs, but it's out of question since it's kinda expensive, maybe when 9th gen is around it will be same price as the DS currently? :P

Do anyone else have any suggestions on how to open the upper scale of the 3ds xl so i can access the LED screen ? Is the design different in american, Japanese and the European 3ds xl ? Apple juice can't be this damn sticky ...

Have you tried the hack 0penSeSamE.exe? It has copyrighted code so we can't link to it from this site.

Nintendo will give you a refurbished unit back. You won't get the same one.

Story goes that people with faulty limited editions get regular ones back.

Get a cheap toothbrush and "Electronics Cleaner: from radio shack. Separate the board from the stuff. Ribbon cables are the trickiest, blast the sucker with the cleaner if there is corrosion it will make it disappear. Hopefully you removed the battery right away. Brush it good, visually inspect it for rust and corrosion. Then take the shell and all the buttons and stuff and put those in some isopropyl alcohol, clean them good.

Now if your screens are screwed over there's nothing you can do about that.

Go to a second hand store, buy a compatible 3DS/XL/LL, pull the motherboards, clean the fuck out of the apple juice one, and put it in the replacement's frame. Then, you can put the other board in the dead 3DS shell, and send it in for repair if you want. Nintendo doesn't actually check anything anyway.

Or, if it's from a pawn shop, it can probably be downgraded anyway, so there's that.

What if the used 3DS XL has a motherboard with a newer firmware?

Newer than 9.2 I meant.
Then throw it in the bad shell and send it in, just like before. Nintendo doesn't check shit, so it doesn't matter. They'll get back a used/refurbished 3DS/XL/LL and that'll be it.

Plus, you can usually turn it on and see the firmware before you buy it from a pawn shop.

Soak it in water and then put it in a bag of rice for a few days.

If you were going to "soak it in water", it should be warm distilled water(little to no contaminants). NEVER tap water(unless you don't care about the item).
But there's really no point in doing this once something has dried.
You NEED something to break the surface tension of the water(soap as an example) otherwise it will "bead" right off.(see rustoleum's neverwet).

It's very tricky to open if you don't position your hands just right. Otherwise it's tough to get a good grip. It's easiest to open if you grip the console with both hands and use your thumbs to push on the rear part of the exterior top cover. Like this:

Ty for all answers.
I'm still struggling with this but ill grab some electronics cleaner spray tomorrow and then ill try use that with a toothbrush to eventually open it. (hopefully)

I got my 99 % isopropyl alcohol from ebay today. Can this damage the ''plastic screen'' in front of my upper LCD screen if i have gotten to the point where i'm going to dip the whole thing in rubbing alcohol?
