if you're someone like I was who was on 9.2 w/ game saves and eshop content you didnt want to lose, do this.
1. back up your SD card to your PC. afterwards put sd card back in the 3ds
2. boot gateway and Format Emunand. this will reformat the sd card
3. take out sd card. copy back up from PC back over to the sd card. overwrite any same-name files
4. with the sd card still out of your 3DS, reformat the 3DS and go through the initial start up steps till you're back at the dashboard. this will unlink your account.
5. turn off, put sd card back in.
6. turn on, note you have empty reformated dashboard (this is your sysnand)
7. boot into gateway mode, note you have your 'old' dashboard with all your old eshop games and stuff (this is the emunand)

you can then boot back to the reformated clean sysnand dashboard, perform the firmware downgrade from 9.2 to 4.2 and then when you boot back into Gateway mode either with the web browser exploit or the blue card, you'll be back to emunand with all your eshop content.

I'm no expert at 3DS, Gateway, or writing guides but these are the steps I took and I can still launch my eshop copy of Phoenix Wright and load my old 9.2 gamesave when I boot into Gateway mode. I recommend Googling and finding better steps then what I wrote, but just know that it is possible! :yaysp:

EDIT: i'm running into problems getting into the eshop with emunand! so might want to hold off... although my biggest concern was losing my saves...will update once I figure out what's going on.

Now I want to know, is it possible to restore the SysNAND without the red Cart?

if yes, how?

Would be cool if I can install a CFW to the 3DS. If you know how it works, tell me

Yes, I have restored my Nand backup without the red cart and to do this, you have to enter into downgrade menu holding UP button

Just joined to help out and confirm that I was able to downgrade my Pokemon X/Y 3DS XL to 4.2 without any issues. I still even have all my eShop games and stuff installed.

After doing this can you go into eshop on emunand?

It already possible, gw card is not needed for the dg, just the launcher.dat and the correct dg file.
Yes and no. You can downgrade with the current exploit without the red card, but you can't install .cia unless you either have the red card or someone confirms CFW working on a downgraded console (and, as far as I can tell, the only current CFWs require the red card to install, anyway).

After doing this can you go into eshop on emunand?
Should work, yeah. In fact, you can use your blue card (only once, until you decide to run a DS/GBA mode game) instead of relying on WiFi to run the exploit.

Thanks so much! I also have a ton of legitly bought eshop games, now i can downgrade as ease

I guess the two key points are:

(1) Downgrading does not delete stuff from emunand

(2) If you have stuff on sysnand you want to keep, first move them to emunand by unlinking. Then by (1) you can downgrade without losing stuff

No you don't understand. If you separate sysnand and emunand you have to enter again NNID info on sysnand in order to be able to go into eshop on emunand. If you downgrade to 4.5 where there is no NNID how does this affect emunand NNID and the ability to go into the eshop on emunand?

That's what needs testing - is the downgrade solid and genuine - or is it achieved by some software tricks to fool the system into thinking it's an early firmware? One good test of that would be to do an upgrade to an intermediate sysnand firmware (below 9.2) using a genuine cartridge, and not in emunand.
I don't even.

Do you know what the phrase "grasping at straws" means? Why is it so unbelievable for you that this is a feature of Gateway when there are so many other, more impressive features included already?

Once you've downgraded, the hard/risky part is over. Upgrading firmware is easy.

Though, he does have a point. Gateway is known for the dangerous launcher.dat bricking, which may or may not have been removed by now, and Gateway hosting the raw 4.2 downgrade files is likely illegal anyway, so there must have been a series of file modifications to make it happen, or they're actually hosting the official updates on their site.

I see. I'll check as soon as I downgrade and post results.

EDIT: On EmuNAND on this 4.2U (From 9.2U, this is the Zelda XL), it remembered my NNID, and I connected just fine. My download history and money are still there, too!

HOWEVER, I am getting an update nag, and I bet if I format this 4.2U, it'll forget my NNID. Dang.

Zelda 3DS XL originally on 6.1 and upgraded to 9.2 successfully brought back to 4.5E. Make sure to check the checksums after you copied the files on SD, and to keep it connected to AC just in case.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
