I was really stupid today and dropped my GamePad in a way the screen broke... so I can see nothing on the GamePad anymore:shit:... I bought a new Wii U and want to transfer my save games to the new Wii U, but I'm a bit confused by different internet sources.

Eventually it boils down to the two following questions of mine:
1. As I understood, the games I downloaded over the Nintendo eShop are bundled to my old Wii U, right? I must use this system transfer tool to be able to download the games on my new Wii U - otherwise I'd have to repurchase them?
2. With that comes the next question. What exactly does "system transfer"? My vWii mode is hacked to run homebrew stuff. Will the system transfer still work or detect a tampered vWii system and abort - or even ruin my new Wii U's vWii mode? Or is it just some savegame transfer and I have to re-hack the vWii mode on my new console?

E.g. I'm asking out for someone who was in the same situation, tried it and knows what happens.

I have not personally tried this as I do not have Two Wii U's. You may want to check the following link form nintendo about wii u to wii u transfer

http://en-americas-support.nintendo...i-u-to-wii-u-system-transfer-faq-and-overview

also wouldn't it of been cheaper to have nintendo repair the wii u gamepad? also saves you from the trouble of doing system transfer and most likely having to re hack the new wii u

I scanned through the FAQ and it says wii u games, account, save data, etc will be transfered to new wii, wii games will be copied and combined with wii games on new system. It also mentions that some games will have to be re-downloaded, so it most likely will not keep your vwii hacked

rdurbin: I really didn't want to go through the repair process, new Wii U is coming tomorrow already... better than waiting weeks for a repaired one (which they might not do as I read / no physical damage to the screen allowed / older than 2 years which it is since today !_!).
Looks like the system itself isn't transferred. Well then I have to rehack it obviously. I have no problem with that though.

CarefulCrysis: I'll try the repair kit some other time, when I have the mood and tools for that (just moved in a new appartment) :D then I can gift the old Wii U to a friend or something...

Now generally I ran into another problem. I can't see anything on the Wii U gamepad anymore. How the heck should I navigate through the system backup menu now? Can I wrap the screens even in settings or intercept the GamePad video in some way?
Touching the screen still works. Doh, do I have to do this blindly? The TV only shows general help about the current steps... at least the setting category buttons at the bottom raise their sound effect pitch when going to the right, never noticed that! I feel so dumb.

hmm i guess link the pad to the old wii u

http://en-americas-support.nintendo...-to-sync-a-wii-u-gamepad-with-a-wii-u-console

but since you probably have to swap back and forth, Im not sure how well this is gonna work, since when you resync, you have to make sure that only one wii u is powered on

another option is see if you can borrow a gamepad from a friend (if possible) and sync to your wii u to do the transfer

That sounds like the best idea. I know another guy having a Wii U, I could borrow the gamepad from him.

If there'd be just a 100% pictured tutorial on the web or a video, I could do it without that, but from my touch tests, the Nintendo guide seems to be missing some steps :(
EDIT: Ah well, I missed the step to scroll down the information regarding transfers, the Agree button was not enabled. I should do a video of me using a Wii U gamepad like a monkey...

That concerns only warranty repairs, though. Surely they have pricing for out of warranty replacements? Seeing as the GamePad is not sold separately it just makes no sense that they wouldn't do anything about it. E.g. if you have an iPhone with broken screen that's out of warranty, just take it to an Apple Store and request replacement. They'll give you a quote for the exchange unit, if you accept that you'll get a new iPhone. Same principle should work here with Nintendo. Whether it's out of warranty has no meaning if you've damaged something and want to pay for replacement.

Yeah, the friend from which I borrow the GamePad to transfer today gave me a link to the prices; if you want to get a repaired / new GamePad, that would be 80€. There are also some repair kits ranging from 30$-50$.
For in-warranty repairs you have to pay nothing of course, but if you damaged your screen that's not part of the warranty afaiwt.

About the transfer process, I'll just try it today and post in what state my new / old Wii U is in then.

just connect the new gamepad to the old wii u then if you repair the old gamepad pair it with the new wii u

or just fix the gamepad. the screen cost $20 on ebay.

or buy a gamepad, stilly pricey but cheaper than a wii u.

no need to do a system transfer at all.

While it took me ridiculously long to get that idea, I eventually thought not doing that. I'd just buy complete new console hardware to put it in the cellar (except for the GamePad). I'd prefer to use only the new hardware then, together, so I don't mix up in the end.

I already pledged the old Wii U to a friend of mine, we will repair the gamepad together, as he got the tools for that and we're both curious how that'll work. We're gonna fix the old one in some weeks, somehow like a christmas present to him cuz he likes to fix stuff (yes he knows its broken and asked to get it himself :D). Then we can also finally play MK8 together!
or buy a gamepad, stilly pricey but cheaper than a wii u.
As said already you can't buy a single GamePad without the console, I also didn't find it anywhere on own research. And 280€ for a Wii U isn't really much compared to other less-interesting-to-me consoles

Ok, new Wii U is here.

Time to run into a problem, right?
It came bundled with a now preinstalled version of MK8 on HDD. My old premium pack had MK8 shipped as BluRay. If I do system transfer, that "download version" of MK8 will obviously be lost, as I can't sign in with my Nintendo ID on the new Wii U - it is bundled to the old Wii U - so there's no way to associate the downloaded version with my Nintendo ID. The old ID can only be transferred with the system transfer tool, but then the downloaded MK8 is deleted in the progress. Well, there goes a MK8 license :'( stupid content bindings... but my BluRay version still works xD.
So I will probably sign in with a new Nintendo ID to park the MK8 license there, if the system update has completed.

Okay, that was fun. Worked like the charm if you followed the Nintendo instructions I linked above.
I now even have Mario Kart 8 downloaded to my new consoles HDD, no need to insert the BluRay anymore :D
The vWii mode must be hacked again, as it's system is untouched. But vWii settings and everything else is transferred sooo well!

I wonder what happens if you tamper with the SD export / import files while taking it out from the source Wii U and bring it to the new one  chances to fuck up something for the good maybe, but that's another topic :D

On another note, we eventually decided to follow the Nintendo repair site of my country. I'll keep you updated about it (gonna do it next week).

Okay, so I just checked the mod status on both Wii U's, for other users stumbling up this thread:

If you do a system transfer, you have to rehack the vWii modes of the source Wii U, as it is formatted at the end of the process, also trashing the Homebrew channel and other data. The instructions however are exactly the same as for an untouched Wii U.
If you hacked the target Wii U's vWii mode before the transfer, you won't need to do that afterwards, as the data is merged on the target console.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds

It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
