Hi everyone, recently I wanted to upgrade my homebrew stuff to from wii to the vWii. However, since I got a little concerned about the image quality (due to the 1080p nature of the Wii U). I did a test on my tv. I put mario galaxy with wiiflow on Wii, and put the original disc on the vWii. I dont know if this was commonly known but the Wii looked better with component cables than it did on the vWii on HDMI. Characters on vWii looked more pixelated. Should i have the same concern for other apps, like nintendont or sneek vc games?

Yes.
Also the USB power is awful, USB powered HDDs that worked perfectly on the Wii do not on the Wii U.
You will need an USB HDD with external power.

vWii does a very simple/crude upscaling (stretching) of 480p to 1080p.

On the other hand Wii just output 480p, and it is up to your HDTV to upscale it to 1080p. Many HDTV does a much better job than what vWii offers.

This is a common knowledge.

No, you don't, you can just get a USB Y-cable, much cheaper and work just as well. That's what I have.

But will it work properly for homebrew?. FYI I want to buy one for general Wii U purposes. I want to stick with ninty recommendations.

Uh yeah, I've used it and it works just fine. You will need to use Ustealth to hide the HDD from the Wii U OS, there's a thread about UStealth, but I've never used it. I just bypass the Wii U OS by holding B as it starts up.

OK, Well still the not proper scaling of the Wii U really puts me off on trying homebrew. I have a 60 inch screen and lord you can see the difference big time (pun intended). heheeh

i have a big issue with vwii because on my receiver when i'm in vwii and my console is set to 720p or higher my tv displays a single color. i don't understand why the wii is sending a completely different color space for vwii from the wii u. changing the resolution to 480p everytime i want to play on vwii is too much of a hustle.

I discovered this today while testing my Wii before selling and I was surprised by the image's quality too.

My question is: vWii thorugh componnet cables will give the same image quality as an Wii on component?

You still have to force it to output 480p AND change video output to component.

It baffles me why Nintendo cannot do separate resolution for Wii U and vWii.

There has to be more to this image quality then just "the vwii has bad video out at higher then 480P."

I have seen no difference in image quality with wii component, wiiu vwii component, or wiiu vwii hdmi. The Wii U is set to 1080P with both connections. I also use my computer monitor instead of a TV.

No you are wrong.

It completely boils down to how good display device is when it comes to scaling. Wii U does shitty upscaling when it comes to vWii. When you use Wii U to output in 1080p your display is not doing any scaling, because from display's perspective it is getting 1080p signal. It looks bad on TV because Wii U is doing a poor job on it.

On the other hand when you forced Wii U to output in 480p, or using Wii, display is getting 480p signal and that's not its native resolution. Display then must apply its own scaling to scale it to 1080p. How good or bad this is done is completely dependent on display itself. Fact is most HDTV will apply some filters to smoothing out the images.

Keep in mind that monitor usually do not apply filters to smoothing out the images. Monitors were meant for close distance viewing, and filters might end up destroying details when viewed in close distance.

I know all this, you missed the point. With the 480P signal the monitor does the scaling, and with the 1080P scaling the WiiU does the scaling. Most of the image quality issues from HDTVs is from the way it is setup. I can also say the same thing about image quality for both my 32" Walmart black friday special 720P (1080p in reality), and my OLD 42" 1080p Phillips both of these TVs had no difference in picture quality.

I have always thought that the vWii looks somehow different and awful compared to the actual Wii. If you have a good computer, you could play some, if not all Wii games on Dolphin. Smash Bros Brawl looks phenomenal in HD.

I don't get why Nintendo didn't allow the vWii to internally render the 480 games into native 1080p internal rendering... Sounds like extreme laziness to me. Brawl would look GLORIOUS in 1080p, as Dolphin has already proved.
