I know japan at least is always once step ahead (e.g. they are at 9.3 when the west is at 9.2)

Taiwan is a sovereign state of China, does that mean they have the iQue version of the 3DS? That would explain the weird firmware updates.

What firmware does the N3DS come with preinstalled generally, because I'm thinking about getting one along with a GW, but if it already comes with a GW-compatible firmware installed I'll probably just wait a bit to grab one 'til the GW update is out...

Mine (JAP Smash Bros NEW 3DS LL) came with 8.1J.

Is there typically any advance notice at all on firmware updates?
That wouldn't be a very good idea for Nintendo to give the hackers advance notice :P

My bet is this kills Sky3DS but not CN/Gateway.
Guess we'll have to wait and see.
As Sky3DS emulates an actual cartridge it may not even be blockable, but who knows, it could be using an exploit in how the cartridges are read that could be easily patched. Since Gateway's update isn't even out yet and they haven't given much for Nintendo to go off of in order to find out how they are doing it, I don't think it will be patched just yet. But it could be that it uses a similar method to NINJHAX or Sky3DS so they can patch all of them in one fell swoop. No way to tell until more info is known really.

Even if 9.3 comes, who is stupid enough here to update its 3DS ?
If you're a Cubic Ninja exploit user and you update to 9.3, you are stupid lol
Same for 9.2 users who wants a GW release...

Never underestimate the stupidity of people. :P Guarantee you if the update blocks Ninjahax, someone will still update and make a thread.

Oh, that's good too hear. I'm probably ending up with the JP version though seeing as it is cheaper and I happen to be living in Japan at the moment anyway.

So if anyone knows what version the JP N3DS has preinstalled that would be nice to hear (or is there some handy site that lists this information that I do not know of?)

Isn't asia always one step ahead in terms of system updates than the west?

China has always been a backwater area for Nintendo. They use special hardware and software, and it's a completely different world. I'm actually surprised HK even HAS a 3ds. As dike people here say, it's most probably the 9.2 update for them

You said it yourself, it emulates a cart.
Emulation is never 1:1, there are many techniques Nintendo could use to verify whether your game cart is legit or not.

Emulation can be 1:1 if enough time is spent figuring out how something works. If Sky3DS ends up blocked, they are doing it wrong.
If they can get 1:1 emulation of a cart working, it will always work. if they end up blocked, I think that Sky3DS should look at using the card IDs that the roms contain when dumped with the gateway dumper. without these, Nintendo will be able to use that as a method to detect if the cart is legit or not.

The template file is exactly that.

Well of course, the cart can be updated so it's gonna turn into a cat-and-mouse game eventually.

...like the games on the card can be upd......oh nvm XD, it doesnt seem like they made any upgradbility plans......but it all depends, i havent seen any technical analysis on how the card works, maybe it takes advantage of a bug in the authentication routine that can be easily patched.....no cat and mouse about it if thats the case, guess we will just have to see what happens

Taiwan is a different country, independent from China since after WW2.
