I really need to buy a cheap Wii U without the gamepad so I don't have to deal with this. I have 4.something firmware and don't want to update my current one and loose the exploit.

Plus i wanna play smash online...

vWii System Menu was updated. However, it seems okay to update. Use Caution.

NOTE: YOUR STANDBY AND QUICK START SETTINGS ARE RESET. IF YOU DON'T WANT IT TO UPDATE IT ON YOU IN THE FUTURE TURN IT OFF.

Version 5.2.0 U, available via an Internet connection, includes the following improvements:
Changes to the Wii U Menu:
  • Folders can now be created in the Wii U Menu to hold and organize software icons
  • A Download Management icon has been added to the Wii U Menu
Changes to Quick Start Menu:
  • The Quick Start Menu will now display when the Wii U is powered on from the Wii U GamePad TV Remote
  • Options have been added to Power Settings that allow users to hide certain software from the Quick Start Menu
Changes to the HOME Menu:
  • The design and layout of the HOME Menu has been updated
Changes to the Nintendo eShop:
  • Disabled usage of characters not used when redeeming Nintendo eShop cards (O, I, Z, etc.)
Improvements to system stability and usability:
  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience
Well, I'd have asked for more but this is OK as I can create folders to organise it.

Next time: GameCube Adapter for Wii Mode and Wii U as "Classic Controller". :P

If you don't care about potentially missing out on Wii U homebrew (unlikely with how the kernel exploit works).

Well, I do care, but at the same time, I'd be missing out on online mode, and Super Smash Bros will likely have the 5.2.0 firmware on it, so, yeah....

TL;DR: Yes, the browser wasn't updated (meaning any bugs are still there), the ROP chain might've broke again but that's not that difficult to get back, and the kernel exploit shouldn't break anytime soon. You have my word.

So for most of us, we can in fact, update with little to no effect for future exploits. Got it.

Actually, no word from us if it's safe to update or not yet. There was a minor leak of vague details a while ago, but our kernel bug probably isn't patched because of the nature of that. Still, if you only care about your Wii U for homebrew (which is a bit silly with all these new games coming out), feel free to not update.

Once somebody gets another userland exploit working we can give an actual word on this.

It's no different a situation than 5.1.1/5.1.2 since the browser wasn't updated, meaning any bugs are still around. The only thing that might delay things is remaking the ROP chain if it broke, but considering we've done it once before, and the fact that once we can start building it there's nothing stopping us from getting code execution (other then finding the correct gadgets), I don't think it's that difficult. So, if you're on 5.1.1/5.1.2, feel free to update, and if you're not then you still have the choice of waiting or updating. But yeah, until we actually get code execution back on the latest version, we won't know for sure.

Sorry, I was talking about a bug in the kernel, not boring userland stuff. I edited my post to clarify. Code execution in userland is boring and isn't directly helpful for homebrew apps as-is.

oh noz now i can't check the e-shop again for absolutely nothing worth getting! :creep:

Let me tell you about a game called "Earthbound."

I have randomizer's dilemma. I want homebrew but I want Smash online more. NW123 and MN1 are trusted though, hope you're right NW. You guys will be focusing on porting the ROP chain first right?

Well, like I've said in my previous posts, if you're on 5.1.2, it's no different to get code execution/userland back. The kernel is another matter, but with the way it is it's unlikely to be patched (as mentioned by WS) but there's no guarantee on that. You're taking your risks, but I'm fairly confident in saying that it's okay. It's just taken so long because everyone working on the kernel exploit is busy with school/life, hence however many months have passed since any news has been delivered.

EDIT: I'm thinking of looking into finding another bug and then playing around with addresses till I find the OSFatal address (like we did last time), but considering I wasn't involved in that last time, no guarentees from me, if I can't do it then I'll get help from MN1 and the others once they're finished with the kernel exploit.
