the_ramdomizer, I understand how you feel. But for me Mario Kart dlc is a must and I will update. As Gahars said, there will not be many games to pirate.

The ps3 scene is much locked on ofw 3.55 (We are currently at 4.65) but people found ways to play backups even on newer models at the cost of buying
a piece of hardware.

Enjoy Wii u and your mario kart now, and worry yourself later... afterall there will be an ode for wii u as well... and eventually a new exploit for wii u just like in 3ds scene.

I don't care about the Wii U game backups, that's not why I want to hack it, I want region lock removal, system menu spoofing, and good emulators for N64 and PSX, that's all I want to see from the scene. Wii doesn't do a good job with N64 or PSX at all due to lack of power. I reiterate once more that I don't give a damn about an ODE/ODDE for backups, purely homebrew apps, that is all. Is that so much to ask for? I couldn't give a flying Dutchman about backups on the Wii U.

Better emulators and other homebrew = yes
Wii U backups = couldn't care less about them

I don't like ODEs at all, too expensive and too much of a pain. I want better emulators than the Wii ever had for N64 and PS1, because the Wii didn't do all that great of a job. I should make that clear in the OP.

I had my 3ds on 4.2 for the longest time, even though i've given up hope (way back before the gateway was even announced), i still kept it on the lowest firmware i could keep it on. a few months later, my sister-in-law accidentally updated the 3ds. a few days later, BAM, gateway. i don't think i can handle another trauma like that, so i'm keeping it on 5.0. but still, nintendo is giving me a pretty good reason to update (online with tekken, mk8, blops2), and i'm getting more and more tempted each day.

Same.
I already own the games I want from Wii U and won't be on the look out for backups for whatever reason, all I want is N64, DS emulators to make my Wii U my all-in-one console for Nintendo gaming.

At this rate, there's just too much uncertainty, I don't want to let myself get locked out, but at the same, I don't want to let those who haven't seen me on a match in a long time down.

If you ask me, this isn't a rational decision you're looking to make but an emotional one. I don't mean offense, but you sound like you are afraid of missing out in regards of emulation achievements. I can argue against this (and I will in a second), but I'm starting to think that no matter what I'll say will convince you to update. That's okay. It's your wiiu, and therefore your decision. You can't argue emotional arguments away (it's like trying to make a list of why you love someone...it may be a long list, but it'll never capture that feeling).

Okay...that said: the emulation thingy on the wiiu...

1) as far as I know, progress on those emulators is pretty much nil (unlike nintendont). Even if a wiiu hack will be released, I don't see either of 'em picking up slack soon.
2) we're talking about the current hack. But new ones are being found (who knows...?). It's actually probable that before ANY way of installing an actual homebrew channel is released, there'll be more than one way to exploit into installing it.
3) I'm not sure if this is true, but...are vwii programs actually hardware-wise restricted to the same power as the wii? I think I've read somewhere they're not. And that would mean that nothing is stopping those developers to make use of the extra horsepower (well...aside from the knowledge that would be needed to use that, that is. Which isn't easy).
4) last but not least: there is no public hack available yet. There IS, however, DLC that requires an update.

Oh, and since you're short on cash I probably shouldn't mention it, but...aren't there better ways to emulate nintendo 64 and PSX1 than a nintendo product? A PC is easily hooked to a modern TV, and with a wifi controller and some tweaking, it shouldn't be so hard. :)

Of course, yes, there are PC emulators, but it's not the same, using emulators on a console and on a TV feels much more authentic than using a PC-based emulator because of the classic controller, the way they are filtered and the way they behave, it resembles the real deal more than running said emulators on PC. Not to mention they are easier to get up and running and require little to no tweaking as there is no plugin-based systems you have to dink around with, saving a lot of time. Overall, easier to set up and get running, no having to tweak a per-game basis plugin system. As far as vWii, I thought they were limited or capped at 729 MHz per core, so even with all three CPU cores unlocked, it's still limited to that same clock speed, but then again, I don't know much about it and will need to have that verified. Yes it is emotional-based but also hanging on the fact I would miss out on good emulation and region locking removal.

Trinux is getting better over time and even runs FCEU GX, slowly for now, but is a future potential method of loading emulators, just need more power. PCs are great and all, but nothing beats playing an emulator on a TV with a old-school like controller and with the classic look TVs make them look. Console emulators feel more authentic to me, but to each their own I guess. I don't know what's going to happen to the Wii U, all I know is, I may end up regretting it no matter which decision I make, damned if I do, damned if don't, you know? I guess I just need validation, if I miss this exploit and update to 5.1.2, will those who update be so damned as to never being able to hack the console for the rest of its lifespan? I do NOT want that to happen. I just want there to be a good solution for those who wait and for those who update, I would most definitely beat myself up and regret it should it be the case that we can never hack the console on 5.1.2.

Hell, I can't even go online with the bloody wireless being as crappy as it is, LAN adapters are a must for me.

the_ramdomizer.......

Ooh, that sounds like a giant dildo or something! ;)
Otherwise, this guys post is spot on: assuming I'm wrong and the homebrew scene is busy/awesome etc, you at least should have the chance to save up a few bucks for an ode. Like NWPlayer said, any homebrew (funny that it'd be if it came out 5 minutes after you finally update  ) is still a good way off, why spend x months strangling your machine?

On the other hand, there is also the Trinux method of loading homebrew and the eventuality of installing a hack that way as well.

Trinux won't help with running Wii U homebrew, at least not on its own. No offense to the team behind it, they're doing cool things, but it is the truth. For Trinux to run in Wii U mode, a Wii U exploit would required.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is, do I wait for a true exploit which can spoof the system update and have access to online games and not disappoint friends who have certain expectations, or, do I simply update to 5.1.2 and have false hope of seeing another webkit bug exploit?

I don't see why you need "false hope" of a new WebKit bug, normal hope should suffice. My position has always been that anyone who isn't a hacker or dev might as well update.

It's not like there's going to be that many games to pirate anyway.

None of us are hacking the Wii U for piracy. Anyone who still expects to use our work for it needs to stop getting their hopes up.

I believe that's their intent, I seem to recall them saying this is a base and would extend over to the Wii U side once they get a means of accessing and that the vWii side of it was temporary, don't quote me on that, it's just what I remember seeing on that thread. And why the false hope part? Simple. There's a lot of uncertainty, and that and I always see a "DON'T UPDATE YOUR WII U" threads whenever a system update is released, that's why. What guarantee do we have that we'll find another exploit. much less one that allows for kernel access? Some say to update, others say to not, who should I follow or rather, I don't know why I make this a problem. So to sum up, I always see some developers that say to not update, when others say that I should be able to without much of an issue.

Yes, it's early in the Wii U hacking scene, but what guarantee do we have that, should we go to 5.1.2, that we'll see another exploit that will allow for homebrew? Is it truly safe to be on 5.1.2? I don't want to regret this. Who do I believe, the threads or developers/hackers that say it's okay to be on the latest firmware? I've head conflicting opinions and unsure what to do.

Because I have bad luck with updating and then the scene suddenly comes out and says "oh! never mind, you can only use x hack on x firmware trolololo", such is the case with a lot of consoles. And no, I won't use an ODE, never have, never will, I've no interest in Wii U backups at all. Just exclusively better emulators, region lock hacks, block system updates, but never have I had interest in Wii U ISO images. Is this somehow wrong of me to wait it out?

Wii U homebrew is useless to say the truth just update as there won't be backup loaders and there's better devices ex: android where you can make your own software, don't waste your time waiting, there's only a few games on Wii U worth it anyways..

That may well be there intent, but Trinux alone can't accomplish it, which is what I said.

Most people who give those warnings aren't completely informed. As a general rule, listen to the people behind the actual hacking.

Is this somehow wrong of me to wait it out?

It's not wrong, and in my mind, there's also nothing wrong with updating either. Weigh the small possibility of never having another exploit vs. your desire to use online features.

Dude, please reread what I said, I have no interest in backup loaders or ODE devices, only homebrew like emulators and other such apps, but not for backups. It's in the beginning stages, but please, don't say that it's useless or that there are no worthwhile games, don't bring that up here and reread what I said.

Don't update.

No one wants a repeat performance from you over updating, then not being able to use a hack.

Um, okay, that was unnecessary.

You beat me to it by about two minutes.

On emulators and co, back in the xbox era then having a TV connected emulator was a special thing. Today everything does it and you can usually shove a real controller on them as well.

Alternatively what is the going rate for a second hand Wii U without controllers and everything else?

I think they go for about 200 on the Nintendo Store for a refurb, it sounds right, but I can't afford that right now, at all. I don't want to miss out on the homebrew on the console, that is all. The other problem I've encountered is from people who call me out for wanting to hack the console or a console, in general.

Armadillo I don't appreciate users bringing up the past, I'm merely getting feedback and suggestions on what I should do, nothing more.

Bygones be bygones is fine, forgetting events of the past is not so fine though. Equally I am not sure there was any particular malice involved in that.

Fair enough, but I don't need constant reminders of the foolish things I've done, but I digress :D That being said, I hate dilemmas like this, on one hand, I could potentially lock myself from ever having decent hacks, on the other, I let people down by not being able to game online. One thing is certain, I'll need a LAN adapter if I want stable online, my apartment wireless is far too unstable to do any good gaming at all, I just hope Nintendo doesn't pull a fast one and go to 5.1.3 soon.

Well let's see what are the cons and pros of updating:

Pros:
1) Online gaming for all your Wii U games (Mario Kart 8 seems to be a strong one in your decision)
2) eShop games.
3) Internet Browser.
And I think that's it for the pros.

Cons:
1) Current Web-based exploit has been patched.
2) No online access for any app or game.
3) Upcoming games might not work with current 5.1.0 update.

Now let's see...
The most important thing to note here is that some users are not updating to the POSSIBILITY of a exploit that might enable Homebrew.
We have to remember one thing, the Web-based exploit does not provide full Cafe OS access yet, so if someone hacks the Wii U with a full access exploit that would mean that such exploit SHOULD work in all system menu versions since Nintendo doesn't have knowledge of other exploits as of today.

That's what holds me together due to my Wii U self-updating when I turned it on some weeks ago.

Now another thing, if Nintendo releases an update that adds a major upgrade to the performance, like Gamepad compatibility with vWii, upgraded Adobe Flash Player for the browser, necessary update for DS VC or other stuff like that, then I suggest to update.

Just remember that there is no kernel exploit for the Wii U yet, so until then I think we are all good to update since the webkit thingy hasn't showed much progress.

That reflects pretty well what Marionumber1 said on post 32, there isn't that much and that he also said I may as well update, hell, maybe Mario Kart 8 online has gotten more stable, as I recall seeing something like that on a game site, something about online stability for that game I believe. Might as well update.
