Apparently some newer games require features contained in the firmware 7 updates, according to the Gateway front page. So an EmuNAND running at least firmware 7 will presumably be required to run these newer games unless a workaround is found.

EDIT - Beaten to it.

Cheers guys, got 2.3b with GW3D 4.5. Updating now through system settings, I thought I used to have GW3D 4.5 previously as I do remember formatting emunand but then again I only got it 2 months ago when there was no way to update anyway. Thanks again for the quick responses guys

Edit;
And done, GW3D 8.1.0-19E installed :D

To "clarify" : emuNAND is required to access eShop. Mainly.
So...

Yes you need emunand now for 7x encryption games such as Tom. Life etc.. and also E-Shop. I suggest if you have not got emunand setup then get it done. :) My bad keep forgetting to refresh the page gamesQuest1 beat me to it, damn you :P :lol:

Be careful when going onto the eshop or other Nintendo software that checks for fw updates (or leaving wifi on). GW seems to have a bug where it will sometimes boots in classic mode when you select GW mode. It wouldn't be that dangerous if they made some sort of indicator in the game menu but unfortunately you have to check in the system menu (which undoes the emuNAND when exiting). So just shut down and turn wifi off right away if you get an update message in those programs.

Or just create a folder "realNAND" in the normal 3DS boot and a folder "emuNAND" in Gaeway mode :)

for my real system nand i simply have the icons at the biggest setting, the first icon being the settings app.
and then emunand is normal, with a big grid of stuff - very easy i think :)
spelling words out with folders takes up a lot of space and looks ugly i think

i think he is talking about "classic mode"...not system nand.....the easy check in that case anyway is to just press select and see if the gateway menu loads, as for sysnand i just have the icon sizes different and system settings on the fist space on sys and the very last space in emunand

but still you can update in classic mode emunand vs gateway mode emunand and it doesnt seem to make any difference......unless you dont have a gateway card and dont want to update anyway as 8.x doesnt work without one

all these different "modes" can be confusing when trying to interpret exactly which one someone is referring to

I've played/tested Tomodachi Life, Nintendo Football Club and One Piece: Unlimited World Red (worked before on 7.1 emunand for me) and all work fine as far as i can tell. Don't have Pokemon Art Academy to test that.

plus some other stuff like pokebank and youtube....i think its better this is done before it got to the point where there was tons of stuff using 7.x encryption, as pretty much all future games coming out will be using it......at least until nintendo try making yet another type of encryption.....but from the sounds of it (needing to have emunand at 7.x+) gateway have figured out how to boot up and re-initialize the keys as set by whatever FW emunand is running, so we might not see nintendo trying the same encryption trick, but trying something else probably the more traditional anti-piracy techniques, like scanning for the launcher.dat, deleting it and resetting the console and stuff just to disrupt rather than stop it

I distinguish my NANDs by the icons. SysNAND has the settings in the first icon slot, and emuNAND has the cartridge slot in the first icon.
