Ok, so today I spilled about a half glass of water onto my 2013 MacBook Air (either 11 or 13-inch, not quite sure) while it was powered on. The keyboard started messing up (the keys would type totally different letters than what I intended) and the trackpad was going crazy. So I immediately turned it off. Following a guide online, I put a fan under a crate and put the laptop (facing down) on a towel on top of the crate, with the keyboard directly on top facing down and the screen hanging off the side edge. The Magsafe lights up green, then orange if I plug into the computer. Can someone tell me what they think I should do next? BTW, this happened about 45 minutes ago and the computer has been drying for about 30 minutes.

Leave it to dry for longer.

go to the store and buy a cheap bag of rice
place the laptop (opened) and rice into a bag and let it sit for a few days

Jeez. Never drink anything next to laptop. Never. Keep it away from it so you can reach it and drink safely. There are many good way to go as people above statement or through a Google. Many good information there. You are not the only one. :)

UPDATE: It turned itself on after about 45 minutes of drying. I shut it back off by holding the power button, so I know the button still works. Joe88 , I'm going to get the rice ASAP, since it saved my phone before.

Please say that was immediate and you did not carry on with life for a little while.

Usually in such situations the response is power down, remove battery (heh), spin upside down (water tends not to fight gravity, give or take capillary action) and leave it to drain off as much as you can, trying to daub some water up is an option but be very careful. After that put it somewhere warm and with it put some rice or some silica gel* to absorb any water vapour (water is bad, condensation can be worse). Best you do this for some 24 hours (or at the very least overnight) as well, the only times you want to go for less are when you can argue that less has done the job..

*you probably don't have silica gel unless you save them, in that case go with rice. Make sure it is proper rice as well and some precooked stuff (if it is made in a minute in the microwave it is not proper rice).

If it is water then that is better, if it is sugary/likely to leave a deposit, something oil based or occasionally something solvent based you are in for more fun as you may also have to clean it up.

I put a towel down, and covered the laptop in the rice.

Dont even think of turning your laptop on for at least a day and a half not even to check if it is working. I made that mistake with a phone and water that was still in the back of the phone was still there. When it turned on it turned on the vibrating function. Long story short the phone continuously vibrated for the next 2 weeks.

Yeah, right now it's in a trash bag (NOT in the metaphorical sense) filled with rice and turned upside down. To answer your question, I did immediately turn it off and wipe off any visible water. Unfortunately it did turn on, once normally, and the second time in a safe boot. This may have been an extremely delayed response to me trying to turn it on 30 minutes ago, in which i held down some keys trying to turn it on, which may have triggered a safe boot (albeit extremely delayed). So I guess I'll leave it for a couple of days like this. Does anyone know how to effectively put it in the rice? I sort of just have the rice on the bottom of the bag with the laptop opened on top of it.

remove battery (heh)

I hate you.

Excerpt from Geeksontime.com said:
1. The most important step. Turn it off immediately. Unplug it, remove the battery.

Most permanent water damage occurs from electrical shorts. Quick as you can get the power off.

2. Unfold the laptop and lay it upside down with the keyboard and screen facing down. Try to get any liquid to flow out of it instead of deeper in to the electronics.

3. Put the laptop in a large bag of rice.

Get a garbage bag and a lot of rice. Put the rice in first and if you can find cheesecloth lay that on top of the rice. set the laptop on this pile in the bag and seal the bag tight. Leave it be for 48 hours. The rice will act at a de-humidifier and suck the moisture out of the air in the bag and out of your laptop.

4. If that doesn't work all is not lost. Many cases the damage is limited to the keyboard and those are replaceable. If the damage is more extensive then worth repairing we can recover your data off the damaged laptop in 99.999% of cases.

Water is the least damaging of all the liquids. Sticky drinks like soda prove more problematic. The worst damage we ever encountered was caused by chocolate milk. If spilling drinks near your laptop is something your prone to do consider a keyboard cover or in extreme conditions a Toughbook

I wanna boil and eat that rice so bad, it looks like it's in good quality, Vengenceonu.

OP, think of it like in a coma. It's like, if Justin Bieber or Nicki Minaj were to be in a coma, and they were wearing oxygen masks, if you took it off to see if they'd survive, or if you think they don't need it anymore, they'll die, because a doctor kept it on for a reason.

no its better in a bag, the rice's job is to absorb the water in the air (thats how it gets the water out from places you cant reach. If its in a sealed bag there will be limited air and less time drying it. The picture above was just for visual of how much rice would be good.
