He's your friend. Give him a fair deal.

I think this thread is specifically requesting a price point rather than a general concept.

Anyway I have never found a pricing system for anything I care to call good*, indeed the only thing I have ever liked here is "something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay, if you good or persistent then you might be able to find someone to pay more" plus all the psychology and theory that goes into bartering.

*the little books that say what cars are worth are basically random numbers with little bearing on reality, as are all other things like it. The only other option there is taxes and that seems to be made up mainly because it would be a pain if there was not something there.

On the flip side pricing depending upon what others have paid or do pay is also not a great method at all.

More generally "but it is hackable" seldom sells me on anything when it comes to paying a premium but I will concede that such things are rare and maybe what you are looking for. When you see a big premium added onto that then consider also that the seller may well be able to afford to sit on it for months on end waiting for one that does not care about their money as much to snap it up.

When you say cosmetic then do you really care? Also does this involve a scratched screen because I might instead put that into the "does it function" category where others say that is cosmetic.

Personally I would go with amazon second hand price, what they might get if they flogged it to CEX/game and then go halfway and a favour, In the end all I will say is make sure your friend does not try to be helpful by updating it for you.

Thanks, I have the ds to make sure its working correctly as it hasn't been used in a while, there is a crack on the case and the back cameras don't work but as far as I can tell other than that its working perfect, need to lend a game to test out though

FW 4.5 3DS Xl's sell in Canada for about $220-$240 (canadian).. the normal 3DS Xl's are about $180 ($40-$60 difference). A used 3DS can be found as low as $130.. I would say a 4.5 or lower 3DS should be anywhere from $170 on low side and $190 on the higher side. If you go in the middle and offer $180, I think that would be fair. Looks like you live in england so in pounds $180 CAN would be like 100 British pounds sterling. Can anyone else give an idea of how much a normal 3DS <4.5 are worth?

I don't know about the UK, but over here you can't get much more than about $130 on eBay for firmware 4.5 3DS consoles if they're used. They're really not that much more expensive than high firmware 3DS consoles, which are about $90 to $100. The 3DS XL is where the price difference based on firmware becomes significant and you see enormously inflated prices, but for the normal-sized model there's very little difference in value, unless you're talking about brand new factory sealed consoles, in which case they may fetch in excess of $150 for certain colors, such as purple.

In Canada here, I found a 1.1 3DS for $100 with OoT3D on Kijiji. Don't limit yourself to pawn shops and whatnot, check Kijiji and Craigslist. If they're innocently posting it, like, say, their kids used it, or they got it a long time ago but haven't used it, send them a message and get them to check the firmware, since it's very easy to do. You might score a good deal doing it that way. Just don't mention that it's exploitable in any way, perhaps say that you're looking for the oldest firmware you can find for collector's reasons or something, or else they may jack the price on you unexpectedly.

Well it really depends on where you live and how lucky you are... I got my 3DS XL from kijiji in January 2014 for $200 (sealed mario kart bundle unit with warranty). It took me about 2 months of looking around on kijiji and I even made a post for people to contact me if they had units under 4.5 but no reply's. At a point someone did message me and said it was 4.5 but when I went to pick it up and checked it was 6.x... I must have messaged over 15 people that had ads and they all had updated to the newest firmware. I was lucky to later find mine for $200 cash since they are $199 plus tax new and wont be < 4.5.

I was able to get a new 4.4 XL at a really busy Futureshop. They only had two left and the other one had a similar 2012 serial number. I'm pretty lucky that they had any old consoles left.

Usually on eBay, GW compatible used 3DS and 3DS XL are sold for a little bit more expensive than a brand new machine.

But, since it is in a poor esthetic condition, I recommand you to offer the same price as for an used non GW compatible machine. And you can do a shell replacement later. ;)

So, I recommand ~90-110$.

personally i got a 4.5 red 3ds xl last week off craigslist in the US. came with original box and with manuals and whatnot. Used by a nice 13 year old girl who I met. Honestly could not tell the system had been used. it was kept in a case and had screen protectors o it while in her possession. probably could have talked her down to $100 but didn't want to take advantage of her really so I paid exactly what she asked without trying to bring the price down. $120 USD. You can probably get a used US region one for about $100 USD off ebay if you look for a while but I wanted to inspect it thoroughly in person before buying. $120 usd is about 75 pounds but I think 3ds are more expensive over there
